Also, wanting to confirm: have you all been having people not show up with mic icons yet have them speaking in channel? Has anyone had anyone with a mic icon that shows up yet still can't mute them?
This seems very widespread, as in for regular instant battles, its even happening within the squad chat channel (as in for several days, there are certain players who just never have a mic icon, and when we had 20 people in a channel last night, <50% of those who were talking had mic icons at all).
Yes you can hear the players (and typically don't need to mute because its just a squad) but it becomes a nightmare for PC, considering that PTT is less convenient on a DS3 controller than in EVE, and PTT doesn't work at all when looking at chat channels or in any loading screen (WTF CCP). This problem is further exacerbated by the awful voice codecs and or awful hardware that people are using, if you have 10 people in a channel there are constant echos and sometimes feedback loops (the kind develop a 1-sec per cycle frequency and grow to earsplittingly loud levels).
FURTHER exacerbated by the fact that there is no "channel commander" feature set up like in teamspeak, in our PC battle last night we had squad leaders switching from squad chat to hand out orders then back to a different channel to coordinate with other squad leaders. It was a nightmare. We had planned to use team-chat voice with selective muting, but even without the bugs this is at best a workaround, and we had to throw this plan out at the last minute. I think if we did it again we'd just make everyone activate PTT except squad leads, and resort to yelling at people for non-vital communication, but again this is a change we'd have to get used to. We like our tactical chatter, but we also like being able to hear the relevant stuff.
I don't think this is a new issue with 1.3. Workarounds for PC, workarounds for the mute-issue in general would be most helpful.
1. Features and abilities surrounding voice comms are inadequate for handling 16v16 battles, much less larger ones. Usability of PTT is an issue. Proximity chat and commander chat are very much needed features. Better than commander chat would be the ability to just run two voice channels at once. Somehow. Maybe PTT being usable is one of advantages of going M/KB
2. In light of the above, muting people selectively is the best option. The bug issues surrounding this completely blindsided us last night.
3. PS if Wolfman NEUTERS the TACNET here and here, requiring us to use MORE combat chatter instead of less in order to coordinate, then CCP will have kneecapped the game's most fun feature and forced us to rely on ones weaker and untested (active scanner, crappy voice comms) |
