CCP Wolfman's Devblog
Quote:The assists in question are magnetism and adhesion. Magnetism works by helping you maintain your aim as you strafe a target. Adhesion adjusts your rotation when an enemy is targeted to help you stay on target. Why did we disable them in the first place? In testing, we found that in a limited number of circumstances they could interfere with aiming instead of assisting it. We made the decision to disable it until we could iron out the kinks in the system. Since it was disabled, there has been feedback that staying on target, particularly at closer ranges has become harder.
It's off right now. If you think its working for you you are wrong. If you think you are dieing extra because of it you are wrong. If you are a short range AR user, when it comes back, you will be picked off EASIER by longer range players who you have been strafing easily for so long. |

In a competitive FPS game where the kb/m is an option, aim-assist is absolutely mandatory. Otherwise I would agree.
Get rid of kb/m support and get rid of aim-assist, or keep kb/m support and keep aim-assist.
We all know kb/m isn't going anywhere in Dust, therefore aim-assist MUST stay. |

Aim Assist is not the same thing as Auto Aim. And even then, you can have a shooter with auto aim that is still really skill intensive. |

As soon as the bigger crutch of KBM is removed, I might be inclined to agree.
I play without aim assist cuz it's broken, but I'll likely turn it back on once it's fixed.
Gotta keep up with the PC tryhards somehow

Only game where ive actually thought the Aim assist was a crutch/exploit is in certain CoD games. You just have to face in the general direction then ADS and it puts you right on the nearest enemy. |

Auto-aim doesnt remotely remove the competitive nature of FPS on consoles. EVERY FPS on consoles has it. DUST is literally the only one without. Halo? BF? COD? All have aim assist. Aim assist doesnt suddenly take away the need for player skill. Round up 1000 people who play Halo and id be shocked if any of them could kill me 1on1. Halo (before Reach especially) was super competitive, it was an MLG game (still might be). Hell, Halo pretty much defines "competitive FPS on console."
The thought process that auto aim suddenly means no need for skill is flawed.

This is dumb. You haven't helped anyone win more by turning of aim assist. Its a preference, nothing more. |

because without it aiming feels like ****. The lack of magnetism makes CQC feel absolutely ridiculous. |

hmmm, maybe its just me. Maybe I turned off aim assist when trying out MKB, and left it off when I abandoned MKB because it felt awful. Probably should try MKB again since the last time I used it was BEFORE 1.2 |

I for one have no idea what other features aim assist could be composed of. Those two mentioned in the devblog i remember too well as being utterly unhelpfull so aiming improved for me with uprising tbqh.

I have turned on and off aim asisst and noticed no difference. Normally it is quite noticble in games, so if anything is "on" its pretty useless.
Again, to bring up Halo. Play it, try to shoot a team mate with an Assault Rifle, then try to shoot an opponent. The latter is much much easier. DUST feels a lot like team killing in HALO, which is aim assist free. Decent aim assist will go a long, long way toward making DUST feel better in regards to aiming on the DS3. Hit detection will still be an issue, but it will be a lot less noticible because kill times will be quicker so you wont notice every single shot that didnt register. |

Hate to break it to you, Aim assist (not auto aim) has been in every FPS on console forever. Games that allow you to turn off aim-assist allow you to often turn off magnetization which will keep a cursor glued to center mass, but they still assit in aiming in other ways.
There is no raw input version of aiming for gamepads on console PERIOD. Fact is if you ever played a shooter of any kind with a controller that used pure raw input you would call the aim crap and never play the game again citing the aiming as completely broken because you have been conditioned forever to think aim functions perfectly with a controller without "assists"
Assits have always been there in the background don't fool yourself, just because the game developers don't have the balls to shatter the illusion for people don't mean people need remain ignorant to the fact you can't console shoot on gamepads without assists. |
