Hello, DUST fellows.
I've finally managed to play this game with a mouse. If you're a DS3 player but want to try kb/m or really any configuration involving a mouse, you might find my experience interesting, if not useful.
Let's start with the most important thing: This was my very first experience playing a FPS game with a mouse. So keep that in mind. I've played PC games before, but about FPS... not even once. Very important as well, I'm a solid "Console" gamer, with the accuracy, comfort, naturalness and intuitivity of 17 continued years of Dualshock gameplay. These data are important to confront your own experiences.
FIRST MATCH: GEK-38. Of course I wanna try AR first! Well, I can tell, you, that was pure luck. I don't mean I aimed bad but still got kills, I actually mean I aimed surprisingly good but that was just luck. Probably I was so excited and focused, I don't know. I late joined and my team was pretty much beasting the hell out of the enemy team. I had the time just for a final rush at Bravo, getting some kill and trying several approaches. After that, they got redlined. I went 7-0. The following match proved me that kb/m doesn't automatically make you better. At all. But this one gave me an extremely important knowledge: It IS possible to perform crazy accurate kills with the mouse and on the long run it gives you more than the DS3 does. But it takes PRACTICE. If you think you're getting better just using a mouse, forget it.
SECOND MATCH: Still GEK. Better enemies. A very close fight. During this match I realized my fondness for the DS3 and how much power is coming from all that experience with it. I went 13-7 and won. I was using decent gear so I went ISK negative, even if not by much. I finally have my first accurate feeling:
-Blindfire 1v1 Uhm.... impossible, lol. I die everytime. The mouse lets me aim much faster and that's awesome. It also gives me an incredible accuracy for my first shot. The problem is... ...tracking. I'm completely de-synced, my hand moves too fast or too slow, trust me, it's not gonna be easy. I'm waaaay more accurate with my controller and I feel weird without it. I need A LOT of practice to track a fast moving target. My performance: 1/10
-Blindfiring unaware, engaged or static opponent (accurate blindfire) Better. But it pretty much depends on how much (and quickly) the enemy is moving, since tracking is the problem. It's much easier to track an extremely slow and close target, instead it sucks with the DS3 because the crosshair movement is jerky while blindfiring. But it's the only situation where I feel more comfortable with the mouse. Overall performance: 4.5/10
FIRST STATEMENT:
With the main problem being tracking strafing (or anyway fast moving) close targets, and the best thing being fast and accurate crosshair positioning on slow/stationary targets, it's obvious that the High HP model doesn't help me at all. Tracking strafing enemies is a huge part of this game, so it's gonna be tough. If this was CoD, I'm pretty sure even a kb/m noob like me could stand a chance against an average controller player, because it's the first shot that count: Fast and accurate positioning > tracking. In DUST it's the opposite.
TIPS:
I also ran into the first problems: If you wish an enjoyable experience playing with a mouse, listen carefully: You WANT to have a decent and comfortable position for your mouse. I was playing on the floor and you'd better do differently: If you've never played a FPS with kb/m, you probably don't know (just like me) that is important to lean your arm (from your hand to the elbow) on a table or something, in a comfortable position. Why? If your weight is on your wrist, your movements are limited. You should use your wrist only for small movements, to be very accurate. As you need a continued, smooth movement (tracking), you're screwed. If you move your weight to your mouse, that is going to be even worst. You will have 0 control, enough said...
Sensitivity: If you're a DS3 player, you will probably find the default sensitivity more than enough, as it allows you to turn and aim so much faster... I wouldn't go over that to begin. If you notice you have a great control and want even more speed, that's ok. But be sure you HAVE the control. If you're having problems trying to be accurate, don't even think at a higher sensitivity as a solution! I'm telling you this because the default sensitivity was too high for me as a kb/m noob. That could be your case too...
-Aiming (general) Aiming feels nice, even if very different. I'm still a bit more accurate with my DS3, but the mouse gives me a particular advantage: If you play with your DS3, unless you're using a very high sensitivity (very rare, because your accuracy will pretty much suck then), you might find that the opponent's speed is higher than your aiming crosshair movement speed... very frustrating! You can say goodbyr to this. In conclusion, I wouldn't know which one is better for me right now. Sometimes I just wtfpwn people with the mouse, but other times I just facepalm myself for letting enemies go away, because I would not have failed with my DS3. My performance: 6/10
A COUPLE MATCHES LATER:
-Aiming (scoped weapons). Weapons used for this experiment: Tac AR; Laser Rifle. And I've finally tried my favorite gun: The GLU-5 TAR. Lovely. Aiming at distant enemies in a position-war is just amazing. Definitely better than the DS3. Unfortunately, I tend to mess up when under consistent fire, because when I'm in danger I really miss the feel of the DS3 and I panic, lol. Laser Rifle is actually great with the mouse! My performances vary from 5 (panic) and 9 (cool position-battle), so I'd say 7/10.
-Sniping ....................................godly. My performance: 10/10.
Conclusions: I will be practicing, especially seeing how good I can do with the TAR. I'm definitely using kb/m everytime I snipe. |
