Tanks. Tanks are fun. I love tanks. All my skill points go into leveling tank related skills. When you see one of these sleek land sharks going about their business on the battlefield, cracking skulls and breaking hearts, you can't help but want one. But, as a newbie tanker, my tank doesn't love me back. She's a greedy gold digging hussie, and she won't give up any of the good nasty until I've showered her in the best modules. Until her resists, effective health, speed, and damage per second go way up, she's staying at her mom's place and talking s*** about me to her friends. I beg her to show some love, but she keeps saying no until I show her some skill points. I can't bring myself to hate her though, she knows she's worth it. Damn hot chicks. Er, tanks.
In the meanwhile, what can I do? My infantry gear sucks, but standing on the ship all day is a b**** move, and boring besides. Sure, it's possible to land in some games where gear levels aren't high, but 3/5 of the time you're going to get cornholed by someone wearing nice duds. It's just an unavoidable fact of life in Dust, sorry to say.
But wait! You have options! If you're going to be a tank driver, the next best thing to fielding your own HAV, is jumping into the gunner's seat of someone else's ride. This is actually a great training tool because it pops you into a first person view, while the pilot is in control. How does this help, you ask?
1. It's an effective way to learn maps. True story, if you're riding with someone who knows the lay of the land, you're going to learn all kinds of useful things. Like where to hide from AV, shortcuts to enemy spawn points, and escape routes when the heat is on.
2. You're learning directly from a pro without having to ask questions. If you're riding with a good driver (And you will learn VERY QUICKLY if you're riding with a good driver or not), You're going to see straightaway how a pro gets things done. No need to ask why he's doing this or that, as long as you pay attention to your screen, you're going to figure it out very quickly.
Stuff I've learned about good tankers
Good drivers value staying alive over scoring kills. Good driver support their infantry. Good drivers are constantly on the move. Good driver help capture relays. Good driver keep on eye on their cooldowns. Good drivers have excellent situational awareness. Good drivers are difficult to take down.
Stuff I've learned about Bad tankers Bad Drivers think they can do it all. Bad drivers are greedy for kills. Bad drivers don't help hold territory or capture new territory. Bad driver don't pay attention to their health. Bad Drivers will attempt to camp spawn points. Bad drivers have tunnel vision. Bad drivers will stop often and make themselves easy targets. Bad drivers are free points to player who know how to play.
So basically, in a nutshell, Kills will stack up nicely for good drivers who exercise caution. Ride with those guys, they're awesome. Repair bills will stack up quickly for bad drivers, who like diving in face-first. Surprisingly, you should also ride with these guys too. |

What? Ride with those guys?! But you just listed a bunch of reasons why they suck! Are you on the pipe?
No, I'm not on the pipe, shut up! Hear me out! Riding with bad drivers can often be just as informative, if not MORE SO, then riding with an ace. An ace can inspire you to want to be good, which is nice. But as instructive as they can be, picking up their level of skill will require time and practice. You don't go from a Padawn to a Jedi Master just by watching Qui-gon beating up muppets, amirite?
A baddie will show you the path to excellence because they fail in a wide variety of ways. You will notice that good drivers all tend to do the same thing. But Bad drivers are like master martial artists who are never content to settle for breaking a mere twelve bricks with their foreheads. They'll always find new and exciting ways to die! And all you have to do in order to improve is remember what they did, and never, ever repeat it.
"Forge guns? Lol, they can't reach me." "WTF is a swarm launcher?" "I have five thousand armor. What do nanohives do?" "That's just a LAV. Why is there an extra L in it?"
Annnnnnyway, we've gone over what a good pilot (and a bad one) can do for you. Now, let's go over what you can do for your pilot.
1. Ease up on that trigger. Yes, infinite ammo is a treat, but you don't have to hold down the GD trigger just because you can. Sometimes your pilot is trying to sneak up on someone. That's hard to do when you're giving away your location by shooting at all the dirt particles in the air. Don't be an ass, shoot only when the pilot shoots, or if you see someone trying to sneak up on you.
2. Capture points. If you've got the area cleared out, step out of the tank and click on those consoles. Help the team out, why don't you?
3. This one should be the most obvious, but DON'T STEAL THE TANK. Sometimes for whatever reasons, the pilot steps out of the ride. This is not your opportunity to hijack the HAV and go be AN HERO. He might be repairing it, he might be taking a node, or he might want you to to step outside so he can dismiss his tank. Whatever the reason, don't steal his damn tank. This is one of the most douche things you can ever do to someone in the game, and it isn't funny.
4. Sometimes, even with a good pilot, the tank goes down. If that happens, split the cost of the HAV with the pilot. He just got you a bunch of kills, assists, and warpoints. If you were having fun, show your appreciation with a vulgar display of money. I split the costs of destroyed HAVs with pilots I like, and I also give tips to pilots who dominate without getting us killed. Show the love!
Welp, that's all. One day WE'LL be the guys giving rides to the noobs. In the meanwhile, LEARN! |

I can not say how much I agree with point 3, stealing a tank is the single douchiest thing you can do, he'll stealing any vehicle is!! I had a blueberry do that to me once, what pissed me off most about it, is how he did a suicide run that accomplished nothing in it, he got no kills, helped us take no points, and most of all, he never even activated the damn hardeners or reppers. |

There's just no reason to do it. One guy let me drive around his shield tank for a bit, which was FUN, but it's not like I picked up instant expertise from it. I think it's a combination of
1. Being new and not realizing that people actually have to pay for those vehicles.

2. Just being an assh*le. |

I've stolen tanks before.... The guy was being a douche though so I didn't feel bad when I drove it into the redline. |
