So after experimenting with the Assault Dropships (Both.) I've discovered things, like how Small Ion Cannons (Or any blaster really) is amazing. CCP, do not get confused, I'm not saying it's OP, I'm saying it is beautiful at this very moment in time, don't touch it, don't play with it and certainly try not improve it anyway, admit it, you're awful at it <3
Anyways, onto the topic, the ADS is a good ship overall, with the ability to outrun swarms without an afterburner, at full speed of course, it's obvious that's where its power is. When piloting you can definitely feel the lightness of the vehicle, I find it very easy to barrel roll and loop, even doing death dives and pulling up at the last second, very simply if the other aerial vehicles feel like this but are a bit faster? I know where I'm putting my SP.
With the assault dropship, those who enjoy flying and killing but want to do it solo have the opportunity to do so. The Pilot has a turret underneath the nose of the ship and with a bit of practice you're able to kill plenty of things, personally I prefer the blaster turret though others have stated they find it difficult to use, honestly it's all about practicing, I spent an hour or two flying around learning to strafe with a ship of this speed, so I can fly in sideways and hit my targets, it's working.
That said, the ADS is much better as a team vehicle, forget about the Pilots gun and get a capable gunner, it's very easy to rack up the points for those kills. With the pilot able to fly around and out run AV, and the gunner able to focus targets, it makes a very deadly combo.
On the Caldari Ship, the Python seems to be the weaker of the two Assault Dropships, despite AA majority being swarms, Shields don't have the ability the ability to stay for long around enemies. After flying both, the Python also seems a bit harder to control, it feels the lightest out of both of them but this is its downside as some pilots will struggle to keep their ship as a steady platform, that said it seems to have a higher movement speed that the Incubus. Personally it's my favourite for solo gunning but I dislike using it for teamplay.
On the Gallente Ship, the Incubus is a great AI vehicle, with the right modules you're abie to tank a fair bit of damage and get yourself out of danger quickly. The balance of the Incubus seems perfect, it's not very difficult to stabilize in the air mean your gunners have a better chance at killing reds.
When it comes to ADS v ADS combat, my advice is not to bother, unless you're against a terrible pilot it's going to take a long time to kill them, the Caldari seem to have the upper hand, especially in solo fights. I always enjoy finding other ships with gunners and killing the gunners (A lot easier now by the way) as there is no risk to myself as I have no gunners.
Advice: If you're thinking about using the ADS with a gunner, I'd advise that said gunner is proficient in AV weapons and carries them in the ship. There are many times when this can be of use, for example:
- Enemy Installations, a pain in the ass, drop a forge gunner off and boom, no more pain. - Enemy Dropships, they can and will shoot your gunners out if given the chance, drop your forge gunner off and lure the enemy dropship in, thus ridding you of a severe nuisance - Enemy HAVs, it is possible to kill HAVs with your dropship, but some times it can take too long or is far too risky, coordinate with your AVer so he can be much more efficient in hunting down vehicles.
Know when to back off, many pilots lose their vehicles because there's too much AV out on the field. You need to accept that some matches are suited to you some are not, there is no shame in recalling your vehicle or better, flying around the outskirts picking off stragglers, whilst the 1st option is safest, the 2nd one allows you to possibly score some kills but distracts the enemy team, makes them fit AV and come after you, easing the fight for your Infantry.
Turret Slots, Left Slot = Right Turret Middle Slot = Left Turret Right Slot = Pilot Turret
Also, remember Afterburners are your friends, despite AVers crying about Dropships being too fast, they're perfect, use the Basic Afterburner to get away from swarms, it's a decent countermeasure and good for losing all kinds of AV.
