Okay... so i only got a PS3 and started Dust 514 about 2 weeks ago now, and being reasonably confident with FPS' i haven't done much online stuff. Played Halo/Gears/BF3 with my mates but it's a bit of a different world online i know.
So, already playing Eve and hearing some corp mates say how awesome it was i jumped in, knowing full well i was going to be out of my comfort zone, not only in console (360 controllers are SOOOOOO much nicer to use!) and in gameplay due to lack of online experience.
Basically i'm training the sniper/scout role and have reasonably effectively put my skills towards such things as Sniper Rifle Operation, Dampening, Gallente Scout Suits etc, as advised on many forum threads. With the corp i have a lot of fun, but recently i have been having a bit of a 'mare. (this is not the corp's fault by any stretch, more frustration with myself lol)
Anyway, the point of this:
I've played probably about 25 games in the last week, mainly skirmish and a few ambush, and it's getting to the stage now where my 'team' isn't winning (this is including some corp games, and again i'm not blaming the corp lol)... not a bad thing you might say but when you're on the 23rd game in a row and haven't won ANY of those 23 it starts to get a bit tedious, and making me lose the will to want to play anymore. Does CCP even match properly? Added to the fact my K/D ratio is almost MINUS and i can't hit jack-s**t if it's moving i'm wondering whether it's just adjustment time to a new controller or maybe i should consider a different, possibly more rewarding dropsuit skill tree. From a sniping perspective i try to take decent cover and good 'spots' with objectives in mind, assisting the team where i can.
Any tips or tricks anyone can share before i just throw in the towel and end up watching a blue ray on my new blue ray player (PS3)?
I'd like to add that despite all of this i REALLY enjoy the look of the game and the game modes, and i apologise for this wall fo text. |

You can still use a controller, like you I prefer Xbox style controllers, but also plug in a cheap mouse for aiming. Controller to get into position and mouse for aim.
The mouse makes it much easier to hit targets.
Of course it depends if you have a flat surface handy to where you are set up. |

If you are sniping and have tough time hitting a target, try using the tactical sniper rifle as it has a faster ROF, when I started sniping I did this and it helped allot, also, try getting into a high position |

Just got the C15-A TSR and tried it out, however the 3 shot clip is really annoying... considering going back to the NT-511 SR. I'm not seeing much in the way of a better 'scope' if you know what i mean. I'll keep trying for now and see if it gets any better. I think i need to look at my fit too and get some damage amp's on there. Need the Advanced Scout Suit too.
And A'Real, i'm sitting close to my desk but i'd rather use a 37" screen than my 23" monitor. :) Good suggestion though, thanks. I'm seriously considering getting that controller too. |

I've been playing ps3 since 2008, was playing fps on pc before that, took me fecking agess to get used to the ds3, all my friends play xbox and i just cant get used to there contollers so i got a adapter that lets me plug my ds3 into there xbox, works a treat
So if your so used to xbox contoller might be worth looking into
Also, aimings a bit iffy at the moment in dust, i find cqc to be a nightmare, hopefully aimings getting a update in 1.4 which i think (not sure) should be around end of august
And matchmakings not the best in the world, it usually ends up being on the "good" team with stacked squads, or on the "wack" team with random solo players, its generally redline or get redlined, very few close matches these days
Better match making is being worked on also, but i have no idea when
regarding sniper, i've never used sniper rifle so have no idea there, i get ohk'd quite alot though by the crafty buggers lol |

Don't bother with ADV weapons yet. it's about a 5% damage increase for an extra 10-15k ISK per item, which just isn't worth it when you're still learning the game. Stick to the basic TSR- the scope is bad on all SRs, you can't escape that. Get yourself a few dropships and practice flying them until you can safely get yourself to the top of a building. Once there, put down a drop uplink so you don't need to fly any more. I recommend a logi suit, for more damage mods and equipment. Scout-sniper is not as good of a pairing in this game as you'd initially think, since you don't need that little bit of movement speed, and getting OHK'd by enemy snipers is hardly ideal. Anyway, this will give you excellent views of many parts of the map, and it's easier to land headshots from above. Focus on landing the first shot to the head, and then just hitting at all with the follow ups. The TSR is designed as one clip -> one kill.

The tactical sniper is effective if you like to capitalize on an open target, if someone is running for cover then you will want a tactical sniper, also I like it for practicing better accuracy, seeing as it only has 3 shots a clip and 185 damage/shot. You'll want to hit the head shots more often so that you conserve ammo. Hope this helps :) |

^^^ also I just got charge snipers and I found the transition almost un-noticeable.....not sure if that's cause I used tactical snipers or not but the TSR does help teach you to "pick" your targets and conserve ammo...if your not into conserving ammo, go logi sniper with a Drop uplink and a nano hive, works all day every day :P |

Okay, so from the general gist of comments it looks like i need to basically practice lol. :) Apart from that, getting a Logi suit would be beneficial, even if it's only for setting up Droplinks and Nanohives.
Started putting some points in to Gallente Medium Suits last night with the aim to go for the Gallente Logi suit. I don't need to go all the way to Proto with this do i?
From the point of using the TSR, i'll keep plugging at it for now, i can see what you guys mean by practicing accuracy, picking your shots and conserving your ammo.
And Muud Kipz... dropship to the top of a building is something i've never done, however i did cheekily use someone's Droplink to sit on a tower for a little while... till i got sniped lol. I'll look in to a basic dropship too. Thanks. |

Why sniping? There are only a few rare really good snipers in this game that actually do useful stuff for their team. You're better off being a grunt or even medic. You will do so much better and be of use for your team rather than taking pot shots at the enemy team and getting a kill here and there. |

That's exactly why i chose that path... BECAUSE there are only a few rare really good snipers.... the elite some might say. I don't know... i can see a lot of people idea's of just sticking as a grunt and bashing out the kills in CQB's. I want to try a different skill. If there was no point in sniping then they might as well get rid of the class right? :)

If you haven't already, make an alt character. Practice muscle memory with him in starter suits in Academy matches. Send earned ISK to your main character. You will not spoil your KDR (if you care about it), your main is getting passive SP. You'll be good |

With an alt do they get the basic 500k SP too or is it only your main? And can you swap SP gain over? |

All characters start with a base un-spent 500k SP.
Good to make an Academy burn character to test out what you like and what feels good for you. Also good to make burn characters to test new skill sets before dumping in on your main.
SP gained on other characters cannot be transfered but if you've only just started it's not a huge penalty. Not like the guys who reach 5mil and realize they've skilled into useless things and just have to KBO to get into what they want. |

I was getting a little bored with the game so ! started flying dropships just to do something different for a bit. I like to take over the top of a high rooftop. Throw down some droplinks and nanohives. Then I will respawn there with either my Anti-Armor or Sniper fit. If there are a lot of enemy dropships up in the air then you can have a lot of fun with a Militia Swarm Launcher, especially if they come and try to take your position. |

Yes, they get 500k too. However, I would probably just stick with what you've already got- eventually you'll want more than one role on that character.
If you want to run a logi suit, help your team, AND snipe: Look around for the rookie forums for the Markman guide (too lazy to link), which is basically a guide on how to SMG/Sniper your way through general combat with a squad. Basically, the SMG's DPS is as good as an AR within ~25m. Combine that with the new ADV Amarr logi suit (sidearm, 3 equip, 3 high 3 low) and you've got a solid frontline sniper with space for at least basic logi equipment (uplink/hive/stick). |

don't play a style your not used to. sniping is not a play style that fits you. second just from your first post you didn't have help picking your skills and chose wrong skills to dump sp into. third even if sniping is a normal player style you need someone to help learn sniping and skills and help with map knowledge... there is a reason why there is only a few really good snipers and if your not used to it its going to be a bad day everyday and you can't just practice your way into a good sniper, your not going CQC and it won't help all that much in the long ran but helps to return to this if you ever mastered it. its never to late to change your playstyle, just find what you enjoy and there are plenty of people who can help in every field to be better. |

With a controller you're better off with 'ambush aiming' - you aim where you think the enemy will be and leave your crosshair there. When they cross it, fire!
But really the game is an all or nothing design - either you're killing, or getting nothing - there's lots of sucky, time wasting effort in the middle ground of that. |

Thanks for the offer Sherrad, i appreciate it. I'll add you tonight. Even if it helps me practice my now second proffession it will be a good addition. And might get me back in to it.

Get the FragFX Shark controller/mouse combo. You'll never go back. I use the regular Sony controller for vehicles and general turret aiming. Everything else I use the FragFX.
I'd have already quit if it wasn't for the FragFX.
Matchmaking is a big problem right now and CCP is trying to make a better matchmaking system. There are proto geared leet corps dominating the pub matches way too easily atm.
For sniper it can be frustrating but understanding a lot of real world sniper tactics can help in this game. There are also some guides in this Rookie Training forum on sniping too.
I love sniping but it gets boring and tedious at times so I do other stuff on separate characters. |

IMO snipers are a bit worthless unless you've got the skill to 5 and can stack some damage modifiers, specifically the complex ones. The difference is night and day. Also sniping as a scout suit is dangerous since particularly at low skill you need to crouch still for several seconds just to minimize/eliminate sway, and this makes you and easy kill for an assault rifle or other sniper. a low SP character is simply not an effective sniper. Its the difference between a 1-shot headshot and requiring 2 headshots and a body-shot for medium frame targets, with all the added disadvantages of worse sway and longer shot count.
Scouts/light frames are not in a good place right now, however they have some uses. See my post here on a cheap and effective scout suit that will die a lot but also kill plenty of people in more expensive suits as well as get you lots of war points.
For sniping, unless you're super hardcore-dedicated (beware no respecs, it'll be a slog), only have it as a backup role when you feel like it. Don't expect to be that effective really, and you're probably better off with an assault suit over a light. |
