**Warning** It's a bit of a read
I have been playing quite a bit with the Commando suit and I am really trying hard to really define what niche it fills and how the suit can be improved to bring it in line with other available options. I see it as falling in between being an all-out tank and a front line attacker.
I find that the commando plays best when supporting assaults / heavies from just behind the front line. Commandos donGÇÖt have the base HP, module stack-ability or regen to be battling face-to-face with the enemy. They also lack the speed necessary to duck in and out of cover in tight quarter battles. They do excel however in providing some added weapon diversity for the situation and are beefy enough to take some shots as you draw fire away from the front line.
The suit gives up quite a bit to have that extra light weapon slot as you have a significant drawback in module slots and a significant drop in eHP from the standard heavy class. Keeping in mind that the heavy weapon slot will allow any light weapon, it really isnGÇÖt a matter of give and take as a regular heavy still can equip any weapon in one slot and keep a sidearm in another while maintaining their large HP and extra module slots.
The extra edge the Commando should have is the ability to maintain a high amount of supporting fire from a vast assortment of weapon combos. Since you get so few slots to customize with modules the GÇ£funGÇ¥ should be in the assortment of combos you can come up with that are unique to the Commando. I believe the rest of the suitGÇÖs stats/layout are pretty much already in balance.
With weapon fitting I find that the PG/CPU values are a tad underwhelming. With Amarr being the race with the highest PG/CPU itGÇÖs still a stretch to be able to fit a quality of gear in line with your dropsuit that will keep you effective when facing opponents in a similar class of gear. I would recommend a slight increase to the overall values (10%). It would be really disappointing to see the other races commandos stuck with ADV PG of 27 (Based on Cal/Gal having 86% of the Amarr PG at ADV medium level) as that would severely limit the ability to mix and match weapons while being able to run any functional modules and donGÇÖt forget that equipment slot where anything beyond Nano/Nanite is costly!
Since a supporting role and weapons expert are the best fit for the Commando I would propose to switch one of the light slots for a heavy weapon slot. This will add more weapon options which in my opinion are the biggest draw of the suit. Chances are if you started down the heavy tree you likely have some skill in heavy weapons so it would fit nicely as an additional option.
The balance still comes with the lower HP, the lower PG/CPU that the suit has in comparison to the rest along with the lack of slots for shields, armour, low movement speed, etc.
Thoughts?
TL:DR - The most fun of this suit is weapon combos. It lacks in many areas but switching a Light Weapon slot for Heavy slot could help bring it some power to make it a worthy class. |

+1 for this idea.
Although I would prefer the commando get other bonuses like more HP for armor and shields and more modules or a grenade slot.
Currently the amarr commando can be surpassed by other medium suits in nearly every way at the same time with less SP investment and at cheaper ISK cost. |

It can be surpassed in almost all aspects by other suits. The weapons are really the defining characteristic. I still think the suit can get by with the current module set up (Keeping in mind that Amarr always have the least number of slots). If the suit had the flexibility to equip ANY weapon including a heavy it would provide more potential firepower.
To go along with the weapon combo theme I still think it needs more PG/CPU to support the limited customization currently available.
I would also offer a suggestion to the HP levels.. since again... Amarr have the highest totals, I would like to see the current stats of 250/250 to be the bottom end of this suit or maybe something like 250 / 225 for Min. which would put the Amarr version around 300/300 base.
Once again, knowing the way the current race stats are handed out its scary to think what a Min / Gal /Cal Commando would have for stats as current Amarr are borderline UP. Seeing a Min. Commando with like 200 / 180 for HP would probably make me cry. |
