Dust is an amazing game. Most intense moments of any multiplayer game I have played. The fact that it takes a while to get good at, hone your skills and learn tactics is a great challange that has meaning to me as I bought all my equipment. I'm a DS pilot, and after months of learning how to fly well I had an epic battle that's still in my mind to this day. Never got that with cod, or battlefield really, instead it reminds me of when I was 7 and playing halo for the first time best experience ever. Dust has room for a lot of growth, but already you need to know how to survive in new eden. I keep coming back because every match is different, every enemy team is using different gear and strategies as well as your own. You actually feel like your fighting for something, even if it is only for your gun. And when I find myself standing on a warbarge before battle, looking out into space, I know massive spaceships are going about their buissiness. I mean what other game gives you all that? Space fleets and warzones in the same universe? This is what I thought video games would do 5 years ago. Glad ccp stepped up |

Also, CCP wants to make a full world sci-fi simulator, where Eve and Dust are just the first parts, and I want to be a part of that vision.

Pretty much this. For all of it's flaws, I still retain an admittedly fool's hope that Dust will achieve the greatness that Eve is. Especially if I can use assets from both games to progress in both games interchangeably. |

I play DUST because I like the strategery, customization and orbitals. + There doesn't seem to be too many kids as it's probably too complicated and takes too long to get good. |

A game that you don't have to repurchase for new content (CoD, BF, etc) every year? Free?
And under continual development?
Why you guys whine about the game, I'm not sure. Now, game mechanics and the player field are a different subject, but CCP is working their asses off here. Give them some credit.
I'll keep playing this for years probably. |

i play because i wanted an FPS with meaning. taking worlds and fighting for something other than bragging rights. before Dust, i played MAG. I got tired of the OP aspects of it as well as the meaningless contracts. Dust has substance (or at least it will).
there may be prettier games, games with less issues, games with bigger followings, but none bring what Dust brings to the table... WAR... as close as you can get to it. you die, you lose your stuff. you slack, you fall behind. you run alone, you go nowhere.
i like the challenge and the skill system. i like that no one can say "that race (corp, etc...) is OP" because anyone can skill into and buy anything they want (ahem... i'm looking at SVER here ). it would be nice if the game were more complete, but patients is all i have. |

I think many of them (AFKers and the type of players you're talking about) hope the game will become much better once they have enough SP.
That said, my reasons to play:
-It's free and I don't have many FPS games. I'm bored of the ones I have (played them very very much). -I have to say I like the "RPG" system, I know it's kinda unfair in a FPS, but I constantly feel rewarded for playing. In other FPS I feel rewarded getting better, so DUST gives something additional here. -Variety of suits, weapons, etc... I feel cool and unique and I love when my teammates are highly specced in different things, everyone has their preferred loadouts and it's some sort of signature. -Unlike many FPS you can play a female character and I gladly seize that chance when it's given to me. Also there are 3 slots, I can play both a male and a female character and that's really nice. -There are 3 weapons I really like to use, they make simply jumping into the battlefield a pleasure for me. -DUST becomes a great game if you play with your friends. |

I like it. It really angifies me when I think of what isn't here, but to contrast that they are working on it... to what extent I'm not sure. I find the only thing that keeps me interested is only playing when I really truly feel like playing.WHich currently is a few matches a week. Any more than that and it gets repetitive and the flaws grow larger and more aggravating.
I can see why people who force themselves to cap every week sound kinda psycho, that would make me feel pretty crazy as well. |

It's been said but I still play because of not wanting to fall even more behind in SP then I already am. The gulf between proto gear and everything else means that if you want to do any sort of higher level gameplay like PC you all but have to have it to be competitive. It is a big difference between DUST and EVE; in EVE even a week old newbie can fly an electronic warfare ship that can render the biggest battleship useless, you don't really have an option like that to equalize the gulf between gear in DUST (excepting perhaps explosive spam and murder taxis).
What keeps me wanting to stay up to date with gear is not the state of the game right now-it has its fun moments but just as many annoying ones- it is the promise of more connectivity in the future. Should it ever reach the point where DUST can have an impact on EVE and vice versa (that actually matters), I want to be able to influence that. |

Now the subject header your using is kinda confusing. You've actually asked 3 separate questions so I will answer each individually.
Q1: "...why login if you don't want to play?"
My Opinion:
-People want to maintain their SP value in the hopes that one day they'll have good enough gear to actually stand a chance against those in Proto gear.
-They want SP gain but don't want blueberries to affect their KDR.
-They're lazy, and don't feel like playing, but have nothing else better to do.
Q2: "So many complain about the game yet they continue to be a part of it, why is that?"
My Opinion:
-People seem to have an estranged sense of entitlement. Like CCP owes them for wasting their time. In ALL fairness you could play this game and do EVERYTHING in it and be just as good as the next guy, granted with a lot more patience, without having to spend a dime. I spent $20 on the ORIGINAL merc pack which got me into the E3 CBT's for DUST 514 and haven't spent a dime on the game since.
If you spend money on this game while your in the "Everything is sparkly and new" phase or to "catch up to those bastards in proto gear" then it is YOUR choice. CCP doesn't force people to spend money on this game. In all honestly I think, for some people, the only reason they play this game is because they don't have to spend money on it. It's always here, will be here for a long time. So they log in, play a couple, and then get upset when they lose (be it fair or not) and then complain because they feel entitled to.
-Some people complain about the game to progress balance. However these individuals are often drowned out by others who complain about issues they do not fully understand.
Q3: "Why do you play this game?"
I play this game because despite all it's current faults, it has MASSIVE potential. I've been here for a LONG time, I've done it all and seen it all. I remember when the most OP and game breaking weapon in the game was the Remote Explosive. I remember when if you were in a match and your enemy called in a Missile Dropship and you didn't have AV, you might as well quit right there.
THE GAME HAS COME A LONG WAY SINCE THEN.
I play because I still have faith.
