With all the vehicle balancing talk lately, I thought I'd post my personal vision for Dust vehicle combat and see what you guys think. This is going to turn into a bit of a text wall, but I think you'll see where I'm going with this.
Infantry Stasis Webifier A/V Grenades Shield Bubble Equipment
Ground Vehicles HAVs - Relatively flimsy yet powerful vehicles with great offensive capabilties (2 people max) MAVs - Relatively tough vehicles that troop transport, Anti-Air, and provide logistics (8 people max) LAVs - A jack-of-all-trades with decent offensive, EW, speed, AA, and logistics variants, but outclassed in all by other vehicles Bikes - Small scout vehicles with the capabilites of tagging enemies and disrupting radar
Air Vehicles Dropships - Logi/Troop Transport/Slow/Tough/EW Gunships - Strong anti-ground weapons Jets - Strong AA weapons
General Idea: My general idea is that a standard squad of 6 people would have one HAV pilot with one MAV pilot supporting and the rest sticking inside the MAV. The standard trooper would want to stick to an MAV or Dropship for transport (instead of sprinting) to the central complexes to avoid being gunned down by a Gunship in the early game. Once the MAV/Dropship got to the central complex entrance the squad would evacuate and immediately bubble the entrance and drop uplinks to protect it from vehicles. These bubbles would insulate the complex fighting from the vehicle fighting outside the complex. Then it would proceed to your average trooper fighting inside the complex for those objectives and mostly vehicle fighting in the wastes between each team's base and the inner complex for the wasteland objectives.
Now for "What Ifs": (You can skip this bit if you get where I'm going with this)
What if a gunship tries to enter the complex and **** everyone? Gunships are slow for air vehicles and are easily picked off by any handheld rocket launcher. Their best job is to try and pick off sprinters in the early game then land and switch to another vehicle.
What if an HAV/MAV/LAV tries to harass inside a complex? They'd get stasis webified and demolished by short range A/V grenades
What happens when one of these HAV/MAV pairs encounters another? They'd generally stand-off at long ranges as the tanky logistics MAV keeps repping the HAV so it doesn't die. But, if you're intent on destroying them, using a dropship to drop a squad or a single "Suicide Trooper" to stasis webify the MAV/HAV combo stops them from moving. Then the other HAV/MAV combo comes in to brawl it out until only one combo remains.
With this logistics constantly repping the HAV and the MAV being tough itself, what stops them from destroying infantry with impunity? At medium to long ranges they do, that's the point of bubbling the entrances to the complexes so this doesn't happen. But, at close ranges, mines, A/V grenades, and other strong close range A/V weapons means infantry sweep vehicles aside rather quickly
What is the purpose of jets? Mainly to annihilate gunships and dropships
etc, etc. If you have any further questions just post.
CONCLUSION: I think this interplay between vehicles and infantry is simple enough for pub matches (with most players sticking to the cheap logistics LAV and Offensive LAV combo) while allowing for much higher-level gameplay and specialization through the more expensive (in price and SP) but powerful specialized vehicles (like the AA jet, the transport/logi MAV, the offensive HAV, etc.)
