Frankly it's just the fact that you can't try to have fun with new things. I don't think it's hard for any of you to figure out what it is I play, just go ahead and take a look at my name if you don't know, but I would like to do something other than logistics every once and a while.
Watching one of CEOPyrex's videos, I saw him talking about his "Seeker" tank and how it was fun to just play around with it, so I decided to fit it up(it's a pure militia tank), but 10 seconds into the game the enemy called in a Gunnlogi and insta-killed me. Obviously I don't expect to beat him in a 1v1, but it ruins the fun when there is no way for me to play around with a new toy without being killed by the toys that every tryhard and his mother have spec'd into, and are therefore over 9000 times more powerful than me.
In the same game, I decided to take out my non-spec'd AV fit to see how it would work on a spec'd tanker, but was insta-killed by a shotgun scout before I could even find the tank. Again, I don't expect to beat him, I just expect to be able to try new things without every single facet of this game being an obstacle against it.
I tried out a scout fit and was insta-killed by proto snipers, I tried a heavy fit(even made a heavy alt since I liked the little amount I was actually ale to do with it) and was killed by proto ARs, and I tried LAVs pre-Uprising but was insta-killed by proto AV, I can't say enough that I don't expect to beat them, I just expect some sort of feature that allows me to try something out without having to sink millions of SP into it.
TL;DR: Dust likes to *****-slap you if you don't use something that you haven't sunk a large portion of SP into. |

Yep. This made me laugh
Since I maxed out my heavy build I've been toying with other fits with a lot of the same results as you. Even maxed out my sniper so I could play with these Thales that have been one popping me for so long no sooner did I make my first shot before I was domed right through the skull. Glad I have 119 left but was very humbling. |

This is why we need gear based matchmaking.
Imagine how bad its gonna be when nullarbor implements his system and you are pitted against high SP proto users EVERY match.
You will be forced to run your best gear and your best gear only.

Woah, just realized what you said here. If I am specc'd into a proto logi suit, and so have a lot of WP and SP, but it's specialized, then if I try something new, and run an standard scout suit, or assault, I will be matched against proto squads...

To be fair, in ten years I would just have enough passive SP to spec into everything in the game. |

No you wouldn't that's factual untrue. It takes about 80 years of passive s to max out if you take into account the missing dropsuits. |

wut?
Why do people even use this term?
I only heard about it these very forums.
There is nothing about this game that is hard. it is just waiting and grinding...and then you get more powerful stuff.
I admit that getting more powerful stuff using no skill is pretty idiotic game design...hell shouldn't actual better game play make you more powerful? Aiming tactics anticipation of your enemy ect.
But a guy who used this idiotic game design to buff up his "gunnlogi" when you did not has nothing to do with "trying hard" |

Quote: In online video games, it is that guy who is giving it 110% all the time because winning and/or having a high kill/death ratio is more important than just having fun. Try hards are most common in games like Halo or Call of Duty and are frequently seen yelling at their teammates for dying a lot.

I think you are glossing over the main idea of the post. I use the word tryhard because he only called his tank in AFTER he saw my Sica, and he wanted to one-up me, and that fits with my personal definition of tryhard. |

I've gotten extremely bored with my AR and calogi suit, so I decided to check into an alt I was letting gain passive SP for several months.
I decided to go minmatar assault with the mass driver, and I gotta say, it's been pretty fun. Still extremely aggravating dealing with the proto 6 man squads and severely unbalanced teams all the time in ambush, but when I do get to use my MD and not have to worry about getting slaughtered the second I spawn, it is a breath of fresh air using something different.
This is the biggest problem with the current SP sink system, it basically locks you into one role, and if you want to vary that role you either have to deal with no specialization in any weapon, or you have to spend months upon months grinding just to give something else a try. |

Hey neat! I saw the Pyrex vid about making a militia sniper and flying up on the MCC or other tall things and just sniping for free. So I threw together what I call my dren Snipergistics fit together with all bpo stuff and try out high ground (not tower or mcc) sniping to try it out. Cathartic. I'm pretty much horrible at tracking constantly moving reds, but when they stop just enough. . . its amazing.
So after I got a feel for sniping, I decided that I was going to learn how to pilot one of those flying bricks so that I might from time to time get some ridiculous height on a tower or the mcc and have some fun when the logi grind starts to wear on me. I go ahead and purchase an hundred gorgons and jump onto Oceanic to begin the heart breaking ordeal that is pilot school. I saw some youtube vids, read some forum how-tos and lost a lot of ships (around 20 something) before I could really understand basic movement, landing and all that. I can land on the MCC, I've done it twice with no crashing, I can make it to towers now with nary an explosion on my part. But! Like you've said, I stand no chance versus all the proto stuff. About half of the ships I lost were from getting insta-shot down as I was making my initial climb into the air. Discouraging!
The same can be said about the dren heavy I threw together with the MLT forgey. I get a kill or two only to be more or less OHK'd by pubstompers in high tier gear.
What I wouldn't give to have some sort of customizable training ground that could be used to practice piloting, weapons testing, squad maneuvers and whatever else without opposition, trolls and those dang ol' tryhards.

Am a try hard for pulling out a swarm launcher when i see armor? Am i a tryhard when i see a LLAV and call in a militia LAV to shoot the driver out? Am i try hard if i see a flay lock and back up to kill him at range? Am i try hard when i kite a shotgun scout? am i try hard when i get up close to a sniper? Am i a try hard to stand on the back side of a hill against a mass drive?

Yep, being mired in the investments you think you'll need for your main role can really prevent you from switching things up as you'd like.
I'd quite like an LR again on my main but that's about 150k SP to get Light weapons to 3 before I can even get started and I have other things I need to do for my mainline fits first. Kin-Cata from III to V is 800k alone and bumping Engineering from III to IV to better accomodate them is 430k SP. That's about a month 'til I can consider the LR which I love but don't need.
Well, probably longer. Nanocircuitry needs to jump to V, Shield Extenders need to be raised from I to V at some point, Minmatar Logi from III to V, Systems Hacking from II to III for better Codebreaker and the passive, likely going to need an Electronics bump too...
Yep, toys to play with are a while off. My branched specialisations are more varied than most though and are doing me just fine so I really can't complain about my lot compared to everyone elses... just don't agree on the whole with prolonged grind to get places in any singular role really fits an FPS. There're multiple angles to take there but one thing that is pretty certain is the daunting gap between those that have and those who don't will drive new players away. A couple months to begin levelling the playing field in a single playstyle will not be an enticing prospect, especially if it feels like the need for a focus locks you in. |

I have a great deal of fun running different suits for different situations This is the way to go. I've spec'd into prototype before and it was fun but it was all I was able to do. Currently I am spec'd no further than advanced in anything (except Scrambler Rifles) and it's been great because I have more options available to me. You can do well in advanced fits after all.
In my opinion since it takes there is a little gap between SP required to go from standard to advanced compared to the massive gap involved with going advanced to prototype, no one should go prototype until they have a few advanced fits already under their belt. Again that's just my opinion. |
