Now that we have made some progress with the shooting mechanics (no still not perfect but significantly better since 1.2), I hope that CCP has teams focused on serious advancements in maps and game modes. We know that we will see very little for 1.3 and 1.4 in these areas but based on the current rollout, 1.5 and 1.6 should be hitting in early fall and they need to include about a half dozen new maps and at least two additional game-modes.
Maps
Variety is the spice of life. Several weeks ago there was a Deb Blog that talked about level design. The system they described seem to imply that they have the tools to put together functional environments in a timely manner. So where are they? We are not even talking about "groundbreaking" level design. We know that basic structures will have the same look and feel as current maps. At this point I think most players would settle for a change of scenery.
At the very least give us the opportunity to start actually thinking about tactics and strategy in combat operations again. We have all got the current maps figured out backwards and forwards. These rats have run the mazes way too often. But the "same" maps with just a few things moved around won't cut it so please don't even waste the manpower. That might have been a decent holdover a couple months back but now we need something "else". By all means if you can deliver "reworked" maps in a hotfix then fine but by September/October we are going to need more.
I mean how about staking a few of the complexes close together to give a more urban styled map or two. I mean you don't need specific suggestion from me but something has got to happen in this regard.
Game Modes
Again variety. We have two game modes with Ambush OMS and Domination being simple variation of the standard Ambush and Skirmish. Sometimes two modes can be enough. Killzone 3 only had three but because one of them (Warzone) was so dynamic there was not much call for more. But two will never be enough for Dust 514.
We need more objective based modes. Now I know there have been a lot of wild ideas thrown out there and developers themselves have teased us with "the possibilities" that war in New Eden can bring. But right now I think most of use would settle for some simple inside the box FPS fare. A simple game of sabotage, where we are trying to destroy/defend enemy bases or installations. And give us a progression based mode similar to Battlefield's Rush, where we have to clear stages and progress across the map as we attack/defend certain objectives.
We can leave the highminded stuff for later on. Right now keep it simple. I understand there are pushes to improve Faction Warfare and Planetary Conquest. I want to see those too. But those changes will effect only a percentage of the playerbase. If we do not see some variety by the time the high-profile franchise his the scene this holiday season, then I fear we are going to lose a decent chuck of the player base, even if only temporarily or intermittently.
I think most of us who have been around awhile have learned to adapt to most of the quality issues with the game. We understand the big picture and we support the various goals that have been set at the 1, 3, 5 and 10 year mark. But simple boredom is a a lot tougher animal to fight than minor issues with hit detection or a particular racial dropsuit not being available.
Anyway...big fan but really hoping we can mix it up a little in the near future. |
