For over half a year, I've been hooked on DUST514 because I believed it to be a generally good FPS game. After popping in my old copy of Resistance 3 this past maintenance, my opinion has changed.
DUST is not as good as I thought it to be. The FPS mechanics are awful. The graphics are shabby. The weapons are bland. The tactical game play is often nonexistent.
The only aspects I find that are intriguing are the fitting systems and the general ambitions to be something great.
After careful thought, it dawned on me as to why I became hooked on DUST: I treated it more like an MMO rather than an FPS. I've played MMOs/MMORPGs for nearly 15 years. Grinding for levels, skills, money, and items were always my primary points of interest. By doing so, I was able to attain more: give myself a fake sense of accomplishment for when I had reached a goal.
The same can be applied to DUST. I played not with the intent of being a competitive player, but with the intent of acquiring everything I could. If I died in a match, I would not think it was due to lack of playing skill. I would subconsciously attribute my deaths to a lack of better equipment, necessary skills, and funds. In effect, this would further perpetuate the cycle of mindlessly grinding for SP day after day.
As an FPS--and even as an MMO--DUST is lacking in many areas. For a game that has been in development for so long, I would have expected more. However, all the negatives are not enough to deter me from playing. I will still continue to log in daily, but I will not continue to fool myself into believing that DUST514 is a decent shooter. |

I play in the hope that this game will improve and become the much vaunted product that CCP was promising a few years ago.
Every build reduces that hope. Every time they start to talk about balancing without any talks with the community it goes down a little more. Add in a sprinkle of p2w crap and the horrible attitude of certain CPM mouthpieces and it is hard to remain positive at all.
Instead of the constant sales pitch for Aurum, we should be greeted with a warning to lower our expectations every time we are in the warbarge. |
