I'm not one to say every thing in DUST must be the same as in EVE. Some things don't translate well from space-based spreadsheet simulator to first-person shooter. I get that. But at the same time, changes aren't necessarily for the better. I'm here to discuss a change that was made for the worse.
For those of you not familiar, the EVE fitting screen looks like this. On the left are the rig slots, high slots on top, mids on the left, and lows on the right. That's right, mid slots. We don't have those in DUST. Or rather, they were renamed high slots. You'll notice our high slots use the same symbol as EVE's mid slots and EVE's high slots use the same symbol as our weapon/turret slots.*
I propose that we return to the hi/mid/lo system of EVE, which allows for much more nuance than the simplified hand-holding system we have now. We do this by eliminating weapon, turret, and equipment slots and making them high-slot items.
Now, I know what you're thinking. Doesn't this mean a logi with lots of high slots for reps could just equip a butt-load of weapons instead? Well, take a look at that picture of the EVE fitting screen again. Note the little white squares at the top right, and the grey squares at the top left. Those are hard points. The ship in question has eight open turret hardpoints and 0 open launcher hardpoints.
Translating that into DUST is pretty straight-forward. We can easily** turn a light weapon slot into a high slot and a light weapon hardpoint.
What does this get for us?
Simply put, it gets us choices. Now, you aren't forced to carry grenades or leave a slot empty. You can put a nanohive in that slot if you like. A dropship might sacrifice its turrets for remote reps, for example.
*Our grenade slots also use the low slot symbol. Not sure what that's about. **Y'know, conceptually. I have no illusions about this being an easy thing to implement, software wise.

Yeh when I first transitioned over to Dust from EVE, the high slot icons confused the **** out of me and often still do.
Also: In most of the trailers IGÇÖve seen for dust; the Logistics Derpships are repping vehicles from the turret points (look at around time index 1:18 ). I agree with that one. |

makes a lot of sense considering that right now with logi suits getting so many equipment slots and the other suits getting 1 it almost makes the logi the go to suit for any kind of versatility.... if we just had suits with hi/mid/low it might even that playing field more.....
that being said.... CCP has so much broken crap to fix already I cant imagine they have the time or motivation to do this soon if ever |
