The two pioneers of space trading games made the same design decision for their new space trading games. They did it for a reason.
On the other hand with Dust i get the feeling CCP just pasted it on because some EvE players wanted it.
Of course with less then 5000 players at peak hours it seems the people that wanted the Sp/leveling system don't even play it. |

SP is what makes the people log on. This includes people that play the game by not playing. There is not much else that the game has to offer than that rush to gain your SP. Well maybe you can add the people you can hang out with, but it seems they are slowly losing interests...
Anyway the SP-system is not the major thing that's wrong with this game at this moment. |

Anyone notice how Eve is far more successful that either of those games and does have a leveling system?
It's irrelevant how other games have done what they did - the SP system is integral to Dust 514, so if you don't like leveling systems, this game is not for you. |

How?
Dust was not originally designed with an SP/level system. One can go back to 2009 through 2011 and read everything CCP said about it. And nothing about an SP/leveling system was mentioned.
It was added on later.
Also everything from matchmaking to AFKing to respecs to LLAVs are all problems caused by the SP/leveling system...it is pretty easy to trace over half off the problems everyone complains about to the SP system.
People keep saying it is really really important but how? What does it add to the game?
The only thing i can see is that it gives a handy cap to bad FPS players who accumulated more SP then new players.
It is integral to you to get a buff to beat people who you would normally not beat? and if those players do keep playing you will eventually stop beating them....or they (as more often the case) they will stop playing. Nothing is gained here.
You say it is integral but the only results it produces are pure crap. |

Specialisation, choices, progression. And not the least, a vessel for the game to generate an income so others can play for free...

It's great that bad FPS players can enjoy the game as much as anybody else. In the meantime, my ego can survive a few beatings. I like that it is inclusive, both in terms of being free to play and in terms of required gaming skills.
If I want an accurate test of video gaming skill, there are other games for that. To me, Dust is first and foremost about the experience and playing a part in an evolving world. |

You don't need an SP/leveling system for specialization, choices and progression.
In the OP I pointed to Elite and star citizen...i can point to a dozen other games that as well. |

The SP system is integral in that without it Dust 514 would be the exact same as any other shooter out there. It adds to the whole idea of permanency of the game - we're not just some random soldier out there picking up whatever weapons are around and fighting other random soldiers; we're making our own characters and fighting against similarly custom developed characters.
This is not just an FPS; it is also an RPG.
Furthermore, you pointed to an SP system never being mentioned before 2011 but seeing as this is part of the Eve universe and the SP system is pretty integral to Eve Online as well, I'd imagine it was always in their minds to have it in Dust. Was there ever a time during the beta we didn't have an SP system? No. |

A levelling or unlock system doesn't add permanency.
persistent world does and an MMO. MMO doesnt exist in this game and the persistence is negligible at best |
