From the moment go you are bombarded with AUR...The screen in front of you in the quarters have all the AUR stuff flashing like a Xmas tree, when you go to the Marketplace to see what is available, the first page is all the AUR content and you can easily be let to believe that you need to spend cash to play the game.
Its a SP cap, with a huge SP gap that makes you feel that you need boosters to have fun in the game. In the ready room you constantly remember that you HAVE to buy AUR, in a very persistent, suffocating way. The Mercenary Packs comes with BPO's that give you a significant advantage with ISK gain per battle.
Dust 514 may not be Pay To Win... but it definitely feels like it. |

Several items have superior aur versions. A few items don't even have isk equivalents.
This is the definition of the problem. |

There's a difference between subtle micro transaction peddling i.e. TF2 and garish, in your face desperation for hard cash with questionably balanced items the result. |

I always thought the aurum marketing was subtle. Aside from the end game "you're not a full man without an active booster" graph. But I've always been too busy dancing/humping everyone in the warbarge to ever notice that one lady talk about aur. However, I am aware that the tram system is closed, and that suicide in public areas is strictly prohibited.
anyway, all that really matters is that all aur items have an isk variant. where my isk fused locus grenades? |

It really is very subtle compared to most F2P games, and TF2 is a bad example. TF2 was originally sold retail and it should be clear that it's a more sensitive issue to introduce micro transactions to a retail game, than to a game which relies on them for its business model.
It is absolutely essential for F2P games to keep the possibilities of micro transactions on your mind. I've seen fellow game devs literally land on the street even though they made a great game, simply because they didn't advertise the micro transactions enough.
You really can't blame them for it, it's either this or a subscription fee. And I personally find that the advertising is done with sufficient class and humour to not be obnoxious.
I generally can't stand F2P and am a rather vocal critic of typical F2P business practices, but so far I have no complaint whatsoever with how CCP is handling it. |

The stats of clearly superior AUR items like tanks should be changed to be identical to isk variants, fused locus nades removed from marketplace, Cavity M2s should be identical to Thukkers as well, these can stay in the game because they actually aren't OP, they have a tiny blast radius making them diificult to use other than at close range, and Core locus nades just feel much superior. People who dont have them claim cavitys and thukkers are OP because of fused locus nades(which DEFINITELY are OP).
I really think the early access point of AUR is enough to be profitable w/out P2W. But other games also not only do P2W, they have deeper aesthetic customization for customers, even EVE has clothes for capsuleers, Dust needs more than just some camo variants of ISK items. And better ways to show your customization off for others to see, for more incentive to buy them. |
