I begin from a position of humility... I am not a veteran FPS gamer. I've never played the currently popular Call of Duty, any of the Doom series, Half life, or even GoldenEye 007 (I'm beginning to think I'm the only person on Earth who hasn't played that one.) The extent of my FPS experience has been the 1st 2 Halo games, though not online, and the Metroid series for the Gamecube. I reiterate, I'm not an FPSer at heart. I picked up Dust 514 (as a beta) on a whim along with half a dozen other free PSN downloads. Dust sat in my PS3 game queue for a few months before I decided to try it, not knowing what it was. I quickly became enamored with the game. Of course I died multiple times, (and still do) as I got my bearings, and progressed a bit through the learning curve. I made my share of SP mistakes, not realizing how precious and crucial the in-game skill currency is. A day or so into playing the game, I came across my first heavy... I had found a purpose for my SP! I decided, that's the role I wanted to play in this game. I started researching the steps I needed to take to progress as a heavy, and chose to spend my SP in that direction. Fast forward a month and a 1/2 later... I have a few concerns about my choice.
I've read many of the posts on this forum concerning heavies and their plight, and I have to admit, I have experienced many of the same issues that have been discussed here. GEKs, Duvolles, Shotguns, Flaylocks, and Nova Knives give me, my vaunted armor and my shields fits both at range and in CQC respectively. And there seem to be issues with my HMG as well. In 1 battle I had an enemy combatant dead to rights. I had him lined up in my sights and I let lose with a hail of HMG goodness. His HP was rapidly declining and I was on my way to 50 WPs and a notch in my Kill belt for that match. But as soon a he backed out of the center dot of my reticule, the hit registering abruptly stopped. Even through the muzzle flash, I could clearly see that he was still within the circle of my reticule but my bullets weren't registering anymore. I was subsequently killed by one of his teammates flanking me from the left, which was understandable, that's all part of the game. But what was confusing was why did my hits stop registering when he was clearly still in my cone of fire?
Now let me stop here and say, my purpose in this is not to whine or complain. Whining and complaining grates on my nerves. It's one of my 2 main pet peeves (along with stepping in gum, but that's another post for another time on another site). And I only have the 2 main pet peeves because, again, whining and complaining about things, especially unnecessarily, irks me. However, I felt it necessary to point out this issue, and I think it's something that needs to be addressed, whether it's the dropsuits, or the weapons, or both. Having said that, I'm not here to make any suggestions either. Any suggestion I make will either be applauded or poo-poo'ed or both. Pro-heavy players will most likely whole-heartedly agree and/or make further suggestions on how to buff the suits, weapons etcetera. Anti-heavy players will likely disagree and/or assert that any suggestion will make the Heavy class overpowered and even posit the notion of taking away some things from the class. I don't want to see the heavy class underpowered, taken advantage of by other classes or flaws in the mechanics. It doesn't make for a fun game. Nor do I want to see the heavy class overpowered, decimating all other classes. That's no good either. I raise my voice for what the majority of other players seem to be clamoring for... namely balance. That is why I respectfully leave it in your capable hands CCP.
Some will say: "Well you're not a natural FPS player! You just need to get better!" And I once again concede that point: I do need to get better. I am not the best player out there on the battlefield, not by a longshot (no pun intended... okay, a little pun intended). Having said that, I don't think you have to be the best player on the game to recognize some flaws in certain situations. And again, I make no suggestions on how to fix those flaws. I'm not a game developer. There are people on staff at CCP who have infinitely more wisdom in that department. Balancing, patching, tweaking, buffing, nerfing, all that stuff is in your wheelhouse, your forte, your raison d'etre. I'm just a humble heavy class player out here trying to enjoy this game. I think you've put out an outstanding product CCP. As my most extensive venture into the world of FPSs, I've thoroughly enjoyed this game. That is why I'm all for anything that makes the experience more enjoyable for myself, and my fellow Dust mercs. I'm looking forward to seeing what you have in store for the future, and I thank you for your time. |
