Hey guys,
i had this on my mind and wanted to get the community's opinions on this idea/query of mine.
Why don't Orbitals issue damage to enemy installations?
I discussed this with some Alliance members who told me that an orbital can damage a neutral installation (you can verify this for me if anybody had seen this in action). but my main query is to why they seem to do no damage to enemy hacked installations (turrets, CRUs and Supply Depots).
my reasoning is this, an Orbital is supposed to be an impact strike sent from an ship in space, aimed at the face of any planet that the battle is taking place on. As we know, this has a devastating effect on any enemy infantry that may fall within it's impact crater, and it even has been known to decimate any enemy HAV's that are unlucky to get caught underneath it also (at least those HAV's that are not advanced level, or well modded out). why then should something so obviously powerful, essentially a projectile shot from outer space, not have any effect on an enemy turret, when it can destroy an enemy HAV?
If i had my way, these should destroy any enemy turret that is caught under the full effect of the orbital, and should deal heavy damage if the turret is on the fringes of the orbital. I would also want to see significant amounts of damage to enemy CRUs and Supply Depots, but not totally destroying them with only one orbital strike, these things take a long time to kill with a HAV after all, so they should need at least 2 orbitals to destroy them.
critiques are welcome, if you don't think it will work for whatever reason lets hear why. |

I can't think of any reason it shouldn't hurt installations.

- Capture it with ground troops.
- Nuke it from orbit.

Orbitals don't do enough damage to make a debt in a supply depot let alone a cru.
And orbitals don't need to be instadeath to tanks. I can survive if conditions are right. I die if not. Balance. |

which is what i was referring to. a top level or well set-up HAV can survive an orbital (and rightly so) but is heavily damaged by the strike. so why is it that the installations receive no damage?
if i, as squad leader, order an orbital on your HAV, you may survive, but then i will know you are heavily damaged, and will try my best to follow up the orbital to finish you off. why cant this be done with a enemy CRU or Supply depot? (which really are my main interests as installations)
Edit: just for balance, not everybody may want to hack the enemy installations. As Mordu's challenge has emphasized, some just want to blow $h!t up! |

I'm sorry I wasn't clear. Supply depots have 10x the HP of a tank and crus have more like 30x.
Even if they did apply damage it wouldn't do anything significant to them.
Unless you want orbitals to get extra damage applied to buildings? That might be an interesting work around. |

Yeah, maybe that is the answer, as suggested by others. Orbitals should be, by a wide margin, the most devastating offensive weapon in the game. in my mind, a projectile shot from space should have the requisite damage to take out buildings/installations. |

Or more damage to stationary targets.
A tank that hears the orbital coming in may move, thus reducing the amount of damage it takes. Same couldn't be said for the installations. |

a tank cant move fast enough to escape OS range and if the tank is in a narrow spot you can anticipate what way he headed and call OS right on him
LAV on the other hand can escape OS because they got speed , i escaped many times from OS in LAV because as soon as i hear the bang i was out of there
and its not like you need OS to take down a LAV
OS should be able to take down any tank
OS should be feared , they come from SPACE at high speed , the projectile force alone should bend any tank let alone the payload |

Yeah they could change it though so that installations and vehicles took more damage from orbitals since they are bigger and more spread/splash should actually hit them.. |

Hahah all jokes aside, it should do damage to them. I don't see why one would want to waste an orbital on an installation but whatever floats your boat. |

I hope everyone realizes that Precision Strikes and Orbital Strikes are different, right?
PS (what everyone has access to) are a lot weaker then any of the OS (what EvE players send down) can do.
Either way, I think that installations are immune to PS or OS damage as a game mechanic. But they shouldn't be, I agree with that. |

I really hate where people keep throwing vehicles in this mix.
I remove my support from orbitals being effective against installations. Slippery slope. |

did not know this, thanks for the clarification. (even though it says Orbital Strike when you order on in the game, not Precision strike. but meh, semantics!) |

(even though it says Orbital Strike when you order on in the game, not Precision strike. but meh, semantics!) Precision Strike is a specific type of Orbital Bombardment.
You select Orbital Bombardment, then you have a choice of which OB you want - Precision Strike comes from your Warbarge, which is always above the battlefield. Orbital Strike will only be an option if you have an allied EVE player above the battlefield. |

Mine does, unless you can chuck 12K+ damage at it at once, it won't die... Much more with my booster running. |

Needs more data on direct hit vs. splash damage. Having random-stroke-of-luck 'danced' between impacts and survive in the midst of an orbital before, I know OB mechanics is not just a "Circle on the map that is completely wiped out" and more a matter of "X number of high damage impacts randomly distributed within this circle"
Direct hit should wreck anything. I think splash damage is appropriate as it is (i.e. a CRU/Supply Depot/tank would survive it, turret would not) |

i get your reluctance to involve the vehicles in the debate, but really don't you think a projectile shot from space should be able to do a decent amount of damage to a vehicle, assuming that its a direct hit?
i agree that a well set-up HAV should be able to survive, but it should be well dented in the process. as should any installation that is hit also.
