I say this because:
1. Some people might just not like the name they have
2. Alliance or corp members can really build a community together by having the same moniker a la DJINN or such thing.
3. Another revenue source for CCP?
CCP has not and as far as im aware has no plans, to allow name changing. it i counter-intuitive to the gaem design of reputation and consequence.
that, and it has a tendency to **** up killboards and server-data related to the name.
and besides all that, you shoulda come up with a better name when you made your character...

Canari Elphus wrote:Simple Solutions
1 - (already in place) - We can see the PSN name of the person no matter their DUST name so its easy enough to go by that.
2 - Show the name change in the person's history along with corps.
If you can change your name in real life, why not in New Eden? Just make sure that there is a paper trail for people to be able to follow. Every corp should be doing a background check on a new applicant anyway so having this show up in a merc's records should be fine.
I agree that $10 is a fair sum to pay for the change and would probably net CCP a good influx of money.
Canari Elphus wrote:Iron Wolf Saber wrote:Bottom Line CCP doesn't want name changing ability to turn into witness protection program.
You are massively more likely to get respec for aurum (or untrainer booster) verses getting a name change. This has been asked for 10 years and so far CCP has yet to budge on this.
You will get far more traction with avatar changing though. I agree that it shouldnt turn into witness protection but I think there should be a way to combat this. - EVE players should be able to see PSN/Account Names of DUST players - DUST players should be able to see histories (corp and name change) of other players Its CCPs decision but it would be a good way for the company to make money. There are a ton of people who would pay for a change for legitimate reasons. Heck, if a corp gets fooled by a guy this way with the information available I listed above then they deserve it.
TheAmazing FlyingPig wrote:I came across this thread in CCP Frame's post in the weekly updates sticky. I can see how this could be used as a "witness protection" scheme, and I think I might have a solution. Feel free to poke holes in it (seriously, point out all flaws).
If this were to be implemented, keep track of all previous names used in a "Previous Alias" list, much like the employment history window.
Example - I rename from "TheAmazing FlyingPig" to "Sammy Whiskers" (we miss you Sammy <3). My name would be Sammy Whiskers, the name TheAmazing FlyingPig would be open for someone else to take, and TheAmazing FlyingPig is now listed as a previous alias. Only one copy of the name can be active at any given time, however it can be on anyone's alias list if at any time it was their name.
Not sure how hard this kind of system would be to implement code-wise, but there's a possible solution. I support this. I would like to add that there should be a time restriction if one can change name several times, like max once a month, once every third month or perhaps even once a year. Or, as The Interfector stated, maybe just once at all. And then I would add that you can do this once in a lifetime change only after 6 months or maybe a year of playing. Thus folks who created a lolname at first and later got serious with things can get a more appealing or better describing impression. Also, previous aliases should be searchable, other than show up in corp appliances. PerhapsGǪ not sure what I think of this myself, but I wanted to throw out the thought. I think this depends on what is decided on the other restrictions.
This should be a viable solution for the legitimate ones, as well as keeping awoxers interest low. Better for them to create new characters then. And legits who wants a new name right away can simply make a new character. The loss of SP should be reasonable the first weeks, or even months.
I see how this can work out well in DUST but not EVEO; we have something they don't: PSN ID names.
And I also came here from the weekly updates thread. |

The version proposed by the amazing flying pig sounds like it could work, as long as alias are searchable to see what current name is.
This system could work for Dust and EvE to allow a name change while maintaining the consequence of actions.
I think an Aur, isk, and time limit should be applied, to minimize over use. Say 20k Aur, 10million isk, and 1 month minimum between name changes.
Name change timer following Fibonacci series would work well. So, first name change would have 1 month timer till 2nd then 3 month to the 3rd then 5 to the 4th 7 month to the 5th A 13 months more for the sixth. It very quickly makes hiding identity with repeated name changes impossible, but allows fixing name for other reasons if needed. |

Spies.
Imagine being able to change your name at will in order to sneak into a corp and ruin everything from within, leave, and then change your name without fear of being discovered.

We can change our day in the present but not in the future? Yes it's a game but I would still like the option. We should get a name tracker so that players can not change their names to try and run away from others. A name history list of all the previous names this player took up. A 24 hour count down between each name change and a small fee. In EVE, there is already a corp history for every player, so it would make sense to have a moniker history as well to track the players past names. This way, the worries of CCP of players trying to dodge trouble and hide will be lessened. |

If you add name history as part of the solution very nervous corps will auto-reject you similar to those with high employment and short duration rosters. |

How about instead of a name change we could use callsigns.
We keep whatever name we started with at character creation. Thats the name that shows up under employment history and all that but the callsign is what shows up in chat channels and kill feeds. You could still "show info" and get the mercs real name and psn ID but what is publicly shown is the callsign. The callsign could be changed when xxx (whatever people want). Corps could get their monikers on old players/new hires without the need to create a new character thereby actually getting the character they hired.
Just a thought. |

Just a thought. To all call of duty fanboys....get...the...****...out Is that directed at me? Never played CoD online in my life. Or Battlefield. Actually Dust is the first online game I've ever played. Thanks for the assumption though.
I was thinking more like real life military. Done that waaaaay more.
Also, the reason I suggested the callsign thing is because of CCP not allowing (likely never allowing) actual name changes. I was trying to suggest a compromise that they might consider.
CoD fanboy. LoL.

In New Eden choices have consequences. We live and die by the decisions we make. If you don't like your name feel free to start a new character. There is no reason to allow name changes, welcome to New Eden. |
