Please give us an option to change our names CCP. Whether it be through something purchased with ISK or AUR, let us change our merc names if we so choose.
I say this because:
1. Some people might just not like the name they have
2. Alliance or corp members can really build a community together by having the same moniker a la DJINN or such thing.
3. Another revenue source for CCP?

I like this idea very much. In addition to the above mentioned reasons, your name may not "represent" what it is you do now, I.E. you named your toon KILLER, and now you decided to spec into Logi and are focused on healing and revivng. Go ahead CCP, it's another way for you to potentially make money. I know it can be done, DC Universe Online does it for 10 bucks and you could change your name every day if you wanted. |

We can change our day in the present but not in the future? Yes it's a game but I would still like the option. We should get a name tracker so that players can not change their names to try and run away from others. A name history list of all the previous names this player took up. A 24 hour count down between each name change and a small fee. |

If this comes in some guys will be pissed i know i started a new character for a name swap and lost a lot of game sp for it but never mind it put me back with the new guys at the time Ps i requested this bout 6 months ago and was rejected hard lol
Start up a petition and get the guys to join its a good idea and it would look good for corps members if they all match up +1 |

"Hello,
Thank you very much for contacting DUST 514 Customer Support.
We are sorry to inform you that we cannot change your character name since our naming policy is very strict on this subject. We may only change names if the change is cosmetic only (changing the case of a letter for example) or in specific situations (such as an offensive name) or if the change is requested very soon after a character has been created.
We apologize for the inconvenience this may have caused to you. Do not hesitate to contact us again should you require further assistance in the future.
Best regards, GM Murasaki CCP Customer Support | EVE Online | DUST 514"
Now I know other games do this and it is potential way for CCP to make money, I can't believe they don't have the time energy or resources to explore this. |

Also, you can try to get a handful of people to report you for an offensive name. From the sounds of it, or the way I read it, it's only if the name is legitimately offensive. My question is if you request it "shortly after the character is created" why can't it be done at a later time. They obviously can do it, it just has to be by their standards. This has been debated to death for years on the EVE forums, since they are subject to the same restriction. What it comes down to is that it violates one of the tenants of the New Eden universe, that consequences matter, and to overcome this would require a bit of dev time.
I give you a scenario. AWOXER Bob joins a corp, spends some time with them and gets a position of power with access to the corp wallet. Bob springs his trap, and takes them for everything they have and leaves / is kicked from the corp.
Because our names are permanent, Bob cannot escape from his actions, so when he applies to a new corp, they know what he is and deny him. If Bob could change his name, it would remove one of the largest consequences for his actions. This is undesirable.
Now thats not the only reason, there are more, but thats just one example of the dangers name changes can do without the devs setting up a system for us to dig deep into a character's background. |

Hello I am Iron Wolf Saber and Nova Fox, for the last 6 years I have built up a reputation as 'that guy' bug overall despite appearing to be an idiot I am generally trustworthy to be a third party trader and competent enough to learn and obey instructions of the fleet command. Okay guy to have around.
Now over there is McScruff, hes a very bad person he just stole the entire corporation wallet and armories of his last corp and is looking for his next victim. People in all sorts of intel, alliance, channels start talking about him. The next corp that picks up him already knows what McScruff did in his previous employ because they're linked into the 'network' and scammed him for all the things he stole and then kicked him out. McScruff now has to live with the fact that he's someone you shouldn't invite to your corp ever and someone to point and laugh or blow up every time you see him.

To the posters above, great points and that sheds a little more light for me. I didn't take the espionage factor into consideration and have no background in the EVE universe. This now makes sense. I understand the live with your consequences aspect of the game, and like other MMOs I've played, one of the harder things to do is to find a name that isn't already taken. Doesn't change the fact that I still want a name change, guess I can want in one hand and $hit in the other. Thanks for the insight. |

Simple Solutions
1 - (already in place) - We can see the PSN name of the person no matter their DUST name so its easy enough to go by that.
2 - Show the name change in the person's history along with corps.
If you can change your name in real life, why not in New Eden? Just make sure that there is a paper trail for people to be able to follow. Every corp should be doing a background check on a new applicant anyway so having this show up in a merc's records should be fine.
I agree that $10 is a fair sum to pay for the change and would probably net CCP a good influx of money. |

You can't see this in EVE. Also, DUST players have to have the same name change restrictions as EVE players, so this isn't a viable solution. |

Bottom Line CCP doesn't want name changing ability to turn into witness protection program.
You are massively more likely to get respec for aurum (or untrainer booster) verses getting a name change. This has been asked for 10 years and so far CCP has yet to budge on this.
You will get far more traction with avatar changing though. |

I agree that it shouldnt turn into witness protection but I think there should be a way to combat this.
- EVE players should be able to see PSN/Account Names of DUST players - DUST players should be able to see histories (corp and name change) of other players
Its CCPs decision but it would be a good way for the company to make money. There are a ton of people who would pay for a change for legitimate reasons. Heck, if a corp gets fooled by a guy this way with the information available I listed above then they deserve it.

This is exactly why we SHOULD be able to change our names. Don't modern day criminals change names and identities? Maybe they could put in a mechanic for a character's history and for a fee or something you could have a private investigator take a chance at finding their identity history. The longer they've been under the new name the less chance there is of finding out the person's identity. Might add a little bit more to the intrigue side of things on both games. |

CCP offered a one time skill respect for free, I'm sure that a one time name change is within the realm of possibility. After reading through the other posts, I agree that changing your name at the drop of a hat is not a wise decision, but one time, c'mon, and they could charge for it. Yes I know the respect was brought on by their mix up, but if the customer has a mix up "name', they're stuck? |

I came across this thread in CCP Frame's post in the weekly updates sticky. I can see how this could be used as a "witness protection" scheme, and I think I might have a solution. Feel free to poke holes in it (seriously, point out all flaws).
If this were to be implemented, keep track of all previous names used in a "Previous Alias" list, much like the employment history window.
Example - I rename from "TheAmazing FlyingPig" to "Sammy Whiskers" (we miss you Sammy <3). My name would be Sammy Whiskers, the name TheAmazing FlyingPig would be open for someone else to take, and TheAmazing FlyingPig is now listed as a previous alias. Only one copy of the name can be active at any given time, however it can be on anyone's alias list if at any time it was their name.
Not sure how hard this kind of system would be to implement code-wise, but there's a possible solution. |

But in general i tend to agree with this. It's definitely an understandable request with the eve dust link not really being obvious yet but the value of unchangable names should become apparent in the future.
Edit: The idea proposed by the pig pretty much adresses the issue of persistence. With this addition i'd be fine with a name changing service. |
