Start new player's with 500k SP as it is now, possibly extend time in Academy to 25k WP. Also here's what will really help, upon graduation from academy player's would be awarded 1mill SP (by 25k WP player's should have a good idea of where they want to focus their build) this would help them be a bit more competitive right out of academy. Beyond that they should perhaps be allowed 2x SP earned and 2x weekly SP cap until 5mill SP. At which point they would drop to the normal cap and be given the option of a ONE TIME ONLY respec. To rectify any potential noob mistakes from the quickly incoming SP.
I personally think this would really help the New player experience and therefore player retention.
I know that when I started a couple days into open beta I wasn't really hooked until I had enough SP to really play with, and by the time I really learned the numbers and fitting theorycrafting I felt the need to restart another char. Which is why I suggested the one time respec to encourage player's to stick with it.

I think matchmaking tiers based on gear meta level would do a lot to help keep people around, lessen the stomping from happening right off until they think they are good enough to step into PC or FW then let them get kicked around |

This idea has been brought up several times, and the argument I hear in response is always the same: The SP boosters are most attractive to players with low SP, so why should CCP essentially give it to them for free?
I'm not saying that's my viewpoint, but it is a viewpoint. Personally I think the only way to improve player retention is to improve the game as well as add core features such as PVE. Throwing SP at the problem is the cheap way out. |

Agreed, matchmaking would be wonderful but we're delusional if we think it's coming anytime soon, for two reason's. For one, it's a very intricate system to develop. Secondly the amount of active player's at one time are currently not enough for such a specific matchmaking system that would be necessary.

I have heard that argument too, but I would think the increased gains would further encourage the use of boosters to maximize that gain. Although the 1 mill graduation gift is essentially free, I'd see it as a "please stick around" gift, lol.
I can see your point about throwing SP at the problem and PVE would certainly help NPE although once again that's a long way's away. This fix could be relatively easily implemented. |

More time in the academy would def help. Also, anything that speeds up SP accrual. The players that are new to the game are the hungry ones...the ones taking their first steps into DUST are the ones that want to play nonstop. Give them some incentive to stick around rather than quit. |

Agreed. People can say what they want about it, but PVE would do nothing but help this game. |

I hope so but both CCP Eterne and Iron Wolf have stated that content releases are on the back burner until core mechanic's are solid, as much as six months was stated. I personally would consider that a while. |

I personally would consider that a while. Well that doesn't mean they are not going to release any new content. I mean, after they made that statement we still got the Commando suit in Uprising 1.2. Also in a way PVE is a core mechanic to a shooter.
Plus unless things have changed, CCP is still doing the 2 major updates per year like they do with EVE. This summer Dust got Uprising and EVE got Odyssey, next winter they will each get their next. It would sure be strange to see a major update not include any new content. |

No because then people could just make a Low level suit to get into easy matches, then build their proto suit mid game. |

True but being on an equal gear level lessens the impact it would have and just as there are players who have been around longer and are good shots there are plenty of new players who are good shots but currently get stomped due to the gear crutch |

I'm trying to work out how the orgy that is a 3xSP week basically for rusted on vets done to staunch the flow of players bleeding away will somehow improve NPE and retention when/if new players turn up.
It's just going to be lambs to the slaughter.

Throwing in pve will dramaticy improve a number of areas as it will allow newbs to grind up cash to afford fits that level out plating field. At the moment newbs both lack isk and sp I need a game mode where they can farm. Just for the love of god not anything like mineing :-P |

Some sort of training area so people can test out things before they even dump skill points into them, buy too many, or any other number of reasons. They wouldn't be granted access to everything in this mode. it'd be more along the lines of "here is one weapon from each category for you to mess around with to give you an idea of how this type of weapon performs." |

militia/standard playlist is the way to, even more so since it seems apparant that ccp are sticking with linear progression from crap stuff to good stuff
no fancy matchmaking is required, it becomes a player choice, its a bit stupid to expect players to grind out 10 mill to be competitive in the most pointless of game modes against grouped up people with 2 or 3 times the health
it also normalizes the game for the masses, makes it more familiar. call it high sec, reduce isk/sp gains to give people a reason to go into what we have now for better rewards
whats wrong with giving the people who just dont give a **** about squads and corps a place to go, people who do care about that hav PC and FW, even then they can still play in high sec with there corp mates
you can say people will squad up and smash on randoms anyway, that happens in most games or you will say it wont work because of skills but the difference between a standard plate/extender at lvl5 compared to one at lvl1 is negligible
sort it out ccp this is a bigger schoolboy error than zipper releasing a 256 player fps with zero clan support |

Part of me want them togo through the true trial and tribulations of when i had sub 2mil SP.
The matter of fact is i started a heavy, it has had under a mil SP and i still dropped proto suits. Yes it took some time, yes if i had no idea how to play this game i might not have been so effective. I've also seen many a milltia AR take down proto suits so it kinda puts the arguement to rest.
BUT it can still be done. Thats my point.
What needs to be drilled into noobs is 'Prioritise'. Yes you can do what ever you want with thoose SP, but if you dont concentrate them on SOMETHING then your gonna get owned. Again & Again.
At the end of the day my advice to noobs would be;
1. Dont play alone. 2. Concentrate your SP on something you want to do. 3.Read the forums regarding your prefered class. 4.??????? 5.PROFIT |

Increase prices of advanced and prototype level gear. Lower ISK payouts at public match level. Increase payouts at PC and merc battle levels.
Now ISK balances what gear people can use, instead of forcing people into predetermined groups based on their progress SP/WP/Gear meta level.
Crazy people would still use prototype gear in pub matches, but one death and it's unprofitable.

Furthermore, change the SP system. Everything is initially unlocked; skills only affect effectiveness/efficacy.
The biggest argument against this is the "but I like having something to work towards"/"htfu, it's New Eden, go back to CoD if you want everything handed to you on a silver platter".
And then we have threads like this, discussing player retention. Make up your minds, community. It's one or the other. |
