This did happen, the thing to remember though is that the player didn't actually spend $8k on the ship. He earned it (probably) all through in game means, and thanks to the help of his alliance.
The reason why so many news headlines include a real money cost to these ships is because of PLEX.
PLEX is a rather unique system to EVE online where you can buy an in game item that is worth 30 days of game time. (for about 19.99, more expensive than a regular $15 subscription / mo which is also an option.) These PLEX items can then be sold in game for ISK.
This is so attractive because a player could feasibly earn enough ISK each month to buy a PLEX, thus essentially having their play time fund their play time, and playing for Free. (a large number of older players do this, which means they can easily support multiple accounts for $0 a month)
This also causes the "$8k ship lost" headlines because it then becomes reasonably simple to use the PLEX sale value in game to have a USD ($) to ISK conversion. So assuming a PLEX is around 500 M ISK (for simple math), and $20 the ship lost was:
$8000/ $20 = 400 PLEX
400 * 500 M = 200 B
Which is actually false, the hull is estimated at 250 Billion ISK, with real market prices closer to 260 B. Not to mention fitting. |
