For anyone who has read Tony Gonzales's "Templar One" this will make sense. (fyi that's an eve book about the origins of the dust mercs).
In the book the mercs have small ATVs that wait for them at the CRU. why not just use those. i'll detail what would need to happen for this to make sense
Why we need a free vehicle/ what the free LAV provides. 1. fast travel to anywhere on the battlefield 2. a vehicle that is free of cost to provide said capabilities 3. a way to carry your squadmates with you to a specific location.
Reasons we hate the free LAV 1. the large vehicle can run over any dropsuit for an easy cheap kill. 2. a merc in the driver seat is often too hard to shoot out of the vehicle which makes mercs without AV helpless to the LAV 3. destroying LAVs requires that we die and respawn AV or run out of our way to a SD to switch fits.
So here's the ATV (4-wheeler/quad or whatever you call it). exactly as we use them in current day. they would fit the driver and have a platform on the rear for two squadmates to stand. no shields, just structural HP. the mercs onboard would get no defensive bonus and being shot while riding the ATV would be no different that being shot on the ground. Given the distinct mass difference, a collision would result in the riders being jettisoned from the ATV and the target taking damage appropriate to the force applied based on the basic physics concept of mass x acceleration.
So lets cover the points one more time. 1. still maintain a free vehicle 2. squad transport is still available 3. high speed vehicle to maintain battlefield maneuver capabilities 4. vehicle is not large enough for vehicle kills (unless hit at high speeds on an already damaged target) 5. occupants are easy to kill as is the vehicle. 6. AV is no longer required to counter the capability and not necessary.
Ok so that's my bit. some cool features to throw on that i thought of but are not necessary (or maybe not even appropriate) are listed below. thanks for listening
My ideas: 1. make mercs able to shoot from the ATV 2. after a time delay, the vehicle auto recalls to avoid ATV littering. (1 minute?) 3. a structure behind the redline at spawnpoints could act as a dispensery for the vehicles to reduce weight on RDV queues and wait times for ATVs. (this would not remove ATVs from being called in anywhere but just provide an alternate course of acquisition) 4. no points for their destruction (just to keep players focused on the battle)
again those are just ideas. please to attribute them to the core of the topic. |

Better idea: Proximity mines.
I admit, I do the Murder Taxi thing, and whenever one enemy does it, it always messes me up. Thing is, not many people do, because I know how to hit my Nitrous to dodge swarms. Oh, AV grenades work well too.
Or try not standing out in the middle of the road. LAVs at high enough speed to kill you are also easy to dodge unless you're a heavy. |

prox mines work too, but as a logi i know, i can't afford to replace an equipment slot just to counter a threat that shouldn't exist in its current state. an assault can't really afford losing it's nanohive. a scout can't afford to lose it's uplink or nanohive. and heavies can't fit them anyways.
Anyone who is any good knows how to dodge an LAV and how to stay out of the roads. but this doesn't always work. the biggest complaint i've seen, that i agree with, is that your proto suit shouldn't go to waste because some militia suited merc ran you over. I can see CCP's reluctance to remove the fee lav. it is necessary to battlefield maneuverability. the LAV is not gonna go away with my suggestion, just it will need to be spec'd into and bought. |

+1 This is a great solution! i don't think your shooting from the ATV idea is all that great though. Given the right weapons, that could become even gayer than the murder taxi. |

The fact i HAD to stop using Flux grenades to replace them for packed AV ones because people dont have enough skill to use a gun and stay in an LAV all game kind of pisses me off... |

Why would the LAV be free, of course it will get abused. Put price tags on them lavs and see what happens. |

Yes, all these things you say are effective methods of avoiding LOLVs, but every map has big open spaces between the letters, so avoiding open spaces are a no
So is dodging the LOLVs you say? Well if they miss you and ram that box behind you, the LAV takes no damage and backs up and squishifies you. |

If a LOGI can't afford to replace an equipment slot what does that say to the rest of us? |

the free LAVs need to have much less shields and armor than they do currently. one AV grenade should take them out, one swarm launch. I'm tired of having to waste all of my AV grenades to tak out an LAV that can be spawned back in immediately.
However all of the LAVs that cost isk or are special event or merc pack blueprints should stay where they are at.
I can understand a player running someone over in the middle of the road as they head across the map, but someone who constantly just runs around trying to kill people by running them over is just stupid.
Honestly I get more kills by jumping out of my vehicle and shooting them in the face...that way people can't complain about me trying to hunt them down with the thing. |

please guys, do not send this thread on a tangent. The purpose was to suggest a solution to the problem not continue to address what we already know. there a many threads that complain about the LAV as it is. please go there to make those remarks.
If you would like to promote the concept of the ATV please post your support.
If you would like to complain, like half the community is, go to a flame thread and do so there.
If you have suggestions to make this idea better, feel free to post your ideas.
thank you. |

You got the problem of lav the wrong way. Free LAV is not the issue, It's a cheap Jeep and will blow up realy easy.
The main problem is the Logi Lav , I'm realy hard to kill and I'm not even taking care i drive usualy straitgh at a swarm launcher or a bunch of Protobear without worrying about AV .
I do enjoy a lot the Murder Taxi Style , but I agree it does ruin the Gameplay.
And when I come to think about it , this is truly funny that I feel more safe while driving around and killing people in my less armored LAV than I do in my High Armor Tank.
This does bring 2 question , are the LAV over powered or is it the Tank that lack the proper Tanking possibility.
I'm a Tank Driver I used to Enjoy driving my Gunlogi , now that I wasted 90% of my SP in a " Now big useless piece of Junk" that can get kill easy by anyone. LAV are a small gift to us Tank driver considering we got F u c k from behind by CCP . |

Most people would agree that logi LAVs are not a nuisance. if i get run over by one I generally don't get mad cuz i know you spec'd into it and are probably a driver merc. that's just me though. you should make a thread about the vehicular imbalance though as it appears you have some good points.
the free LAV is not as easy as you think. while comparatively speaking it does not have near the tank of any other vehicle in game, it still requires specific equipment to dispatch. the need for this equipment should only arise at the need of the opposition calling in tanks or logi LAVs. |

+1 I believe that this is what the free lav was more or less supposed to be in the first place. Simple efficient troop transport to and from objectives, and nothing more. Also a solution like this would force people to be a bit more selective of the route they take to an objective rather than going straight through a group of enemy troops. |
