I started as a logi originally, and got a little tired of this, so I switched to heavy recently. I've quite enjoyed my fat suit in the last few weeks... for reference, I run mostly Sentinel advanced A/1 suits. Unlike the other merc, I would recommend going Sentinel, for the time being, to advanced. The regular Amarr heavy frame suits are way more expensive, and you spend too much dying at the beginning to make it cost effective. Some of my Sentinel suits run 20k with an MH-82 and enhanced mods, which will allow you to make a profit. I don't even use the medium frame anymore. And don't underestimate the bonus regarding heat buildup -- nothing sucks worse that to sieze up just as your about to finish somebody off.

Both. I switch back and forth between them at depots, depending on what is needed. Skill into level 3 for forge and HMG to start, and build into proficiency from there, while still using your advanced weapons like the MH-82 and 9K330.

Honestly, I don't like either of those types. My personal opinion (which I'm sure other heavys may disagree with) is that shield OR armor tanking is a waste of modules. If you have Dropsuit Armor and Shield Upgrades to 5 (extra 5% per level total hp), that puts you at 506 hp shield and 506 hp armor. You already ARE tanked. So then, the key is to maximize and maintain what you already have, which means skilling into repair modules, shield rechargers, and shield regulators. On my Sentinel A/1, my high slot goes to my recharger (actually energizer now), and my 3 low slots have 2 enhanced armor reppers and 1 enhanced regulator. The regulator is important -- as a heavy, you should be popping in and out of cover, and this will lessen the shield delay timer, getting you back into battle faster. The recharger is important cause it take a freaking long time (combat-wise) to charge up 500hp worth of shield hp. The faster, the better.
I would recommend against damage mods, cause I think that's a waste -- you should be skilling up into HMG proficiency to take care of that worry. You'll notice a big jump in your kills when you start skilling into it.
