I've been using the SMG, but I now that I've gotten my respect, maybe I should try another option. Looking for the opinions of others who use the HMG.
The only reason I'm thinking of changing is that the SMG also has problems against shields, and this has come back to haunt me on occasion. PROS and CONS, please |

Bump for interest. I actually don't carry any S while using an HMG; I find that I'd rather save that CPU to fit better modules. However, I've been thinking that a flaylock might be a nice compliment to my MLR-A or Boundless, so I can get those assault guys that are just out of range. I'm curious if anyone else has already done this, and what success they've had. Anybody? |

I use the SMG too, is a fantastic weapon if you are good with it or just lucky, that gun can exterminate almost every suit a short range, and if the shields are down, you do more damage than an AR. Something funny is when you manage to flux and discharge the shields of some Calogi, then eat their armor.
Pros:
-Good damage -High rate of fire -Controllable dispersion -Do more damage to armor than an Assault Rifle, killing someone almost instantly, especially suit with low armor like Caldari or scouts. -Even if not noticeable, it does a decent damage to shields, so if you're good enough, you can kill almost everyone -Good amount of shot before having to reload
Cons:
-High rate of fire (Yes, if you don't know how to use it properly, you'll have to reload, giving you a disadvantage). -low optimal range. -Sometimes it doesn't affect shields effectively.
In my opinion, the.best weapon of choice is the SMG. I have almost the effectiveness of a HMG but smaller.
Other guns like the scrambler pistol, do high damage to shields, and decent to armor, but the RoF sometimes, make that gun a luck based one, I have seen some people beating the crap out of everyone using the assault variant, and the breach, well, that's a gun designed to destroy skulls, but you must be fast to kill someone with body shots I'd that person have high EHP.
I do not recommend the flaylock to be used with an HMG, it has low ammo on the mag, and even if that gin can kill almost everyone with 3 shots, if you miss, as a heavy, you're screw.
And Nova knives... Well, that would be funny.
Wait until the SMG variants get implemented, I think that a plasma SMG (Hybrid) is being worked, and that will do a great job at CQC. (A rail SMG is coming too, It's Caldari).
I hope this answer could help you. |

Flaylocks - if for no reason other than range. Great to use as a primary when getting across spacious areas. |

Well, if you don't like shields, there's the Scrambler Pistol. Does crazy headshot damage.
There's also the flaylock, but being in a fatsuit, I'm sure you already know how those work. |

FG Heavy rather than HMG but I favour the Scrambler Pistol. TT-3 Assault. 11 shots, decent range, deadly headshots that do 350% armour damage or 450% shields. If you aim true it's incredibly potent.
In a brief stint with HMGs I found use for it when a target on higher ground was trying to fire on me with his body covered and only the head exposed. Does wonders for mitigating most HMG damage. Scrambler? Not so much. A couple pops and their grey matter is fried.
So higher damage potential (higher burst than the HMG probably), precision, anti-shield bonus.
Lower overall ammo reserves, requires precision, might not be as great a panic weapon as SMG. |

Since range has been mentioned... I went and checked the forums and came across this: https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=1001191#post1001191
It states that the new absolute range for HMG's is 130m SMG and Scramble Pistol are 125m and Flaylock disappears at 52.
No mention of damage falloff.
Does this change anyone's minds?
Great responses so far, thanks! |

Once saw a guy using the nova knives as an accompany to the HMG, saw that guy in the kill feed 3 times with the knives, and ended up positive overall. |

I would like to say what ever you can aim the best. I roll SMG's and get alot of headshot kills with it. But currently the core flaylock is probably more deadly than your hmg. (personal opinion from an armor tanker) |

There is truth in this man post.
SMG is a much, much better panic weapon though overall Scrambler Pistol > SMG |
