The current tree is anticipated to be maxed out in about 7odd years.
Expect this number to rise considerably throughout the game's lifespan. We have a dozen variants of existing gear to be added, each with their own skills/branches, and new roles/classes wich add even more SP into the tree. |

Are you talking about the weekly SP cap or the lifetime SP cap?
Weekly cap exists but you get a soft cap of one SP per war point up to 1000 SP per match without active booster once you reach the weekly cap.
As far as lifetime SP is concerned, it's however much SP is needed to finish training every possible skill book to level five in the game. And considering that CCP plans to throw in more skill books in the future for other things for the next ten years, there is no foreseeable limit when looking at the future. |

Afaik the 7 years are based on fastest possible skill gain. Not everyone constantly boosts and caps out and even less are expected to do so 7 years straight.
Edit: Thinking about it. Hardly anyone will do this so i think it would take the vast majority of players more than those ten years if they even manage to reach it at all. |

Maxing out every week with boosters will take you 13.5 years. EVERY WEEK WITH BOOSTERS > 10 years. How is that reasonable estimate for the average player again? |

For getting half of the skills we have now. Granted most of them are a waste, but on principle it's still way off base. |

How is that reasonable estimate for the average player again? The calculations i saw came to the conclusion that it would take way less than that to max out if boosted. Do you have a link i can look at? I'm too lazy doing the calculations myself right now.

The old closed beta tree took 7 years, our current tree with the weekly SP cap and passive SP takes around 14-28 years I calculated it in a different post. |

Your using boosters for 8 years, my calculations use no boosters. When adding the passive SP it goes down from 28 to 15, your calculations aren't wrong. Most players do not buy boosters though, and if they do I doubt they plan to do so for 8 years, this would amount to $1920. |

Agreed, combined with my rather low estimate of 240m total (seems more like 250-280, currently) this explains the disparity. The reason i assumed boosters for the whole period (and already stressed the fact earlier that this number grows in real application due hardly anyone really boosting through the whole thing) is that i, frankly, expected CCP to assume this aswell.
Now in my opinion this is nothing i have an issue with. I'd rather be disappointed if the skilltree would have been designed to be maxed out by all but the most extreme players at all. I think this design strengthens the value of SP as there is always more SP to be had and to benefit from and the fact that every fit has only a limited number of skills that each cap out at V effectively limit the power gap as it should.

Thats with boosters on both active and passive. 30 years with just passive, and 15 years with passive SP and capping every week with no boosters. |

You guys make some strong points about sp cap. But I'm a newb and want to play for fun, AND to raise skills... I quit 5 other PC games to play this, just for fun, cuz I enjoy it (and I suck kdr/wp-wise). What about us? Seriously, I mean, where does the cap come into play? Being limited per week, when I have hours to play, and AUR to buy/spend? Bought my first aug only to find out there is a cap... How can someone like me catch up, and/or get good gear to compete. Why should I be limited when I have 300 hrs to play, just because I can catch up to the vets? And if I buy a booster, wtf, why should I be backseated when I am supporting the game we love? It's my money I give them, why should that slow down my progression? I could pump thousands into this game, yet get blocked in aug's/weekly caps. There is a misjustice here that needs to be solved. Otherwise, during my cap'd time, I can just pay other companies to play.... |
