the academy tries to fix the issue of new players being crushed by forcibly separating them from everybody else. however, by isolating a chunk of the player base, this starts chipping away at "one universe one war", especially if the academy is significantly expanded like players are currently requesting. furthermore, its very existence is a concession to the idea that new characters are useless and are forced to grind for a while to become fun or useful.
other problems with the academy that i have talked about before is the mandatory aspect... players must grind to exit if they want to face harder opponents, and cannot subsequently return if they feel overwhelmed and outclassed.
while i support an extremely long progression to unlock everything in the game, at the same time i believe it is critical that progression to the first playable character be extremely short - even zero. by doing this, we might not need to have an academy in the first place.
to accomplish this, i believe we should retain the current progression, but grant new characters L3 in their racial medium frame and L3 in assault rifle operation. furthermore, you would also need to grant these skills to existing characters, or the equivalent SP to characters that have already trained them.
i chose medium frame and assault rifle because, based on the starter suits and my own experience in the game, it is clear that this is the foundational template upon which all new characters are intended to start from. (while I'm aware that extremely specialized characters that skipped even these basic skills will feel slighted, imho these same players are already feeling a lot of angst today, due to the fact that such overspecialization was never intended to be part of the design).
furthermore, to further reduce the barriers to progression needed to reach the first payable load out, we should further eliminate globally useful skills such as dropsuit engineering. these skills serve no purpose except as mandatory "must haves" that characters should grind through before they can start making interesting choices. a lot of progress was made in uprising, and i think we should continue cleaning this up. delete them, refund any invested sp, and baseline their effects.
if these changes are made, new players will hit the ground better prepared to play with the "big boys" without the need to be babysat in an isolated zone, and have a solid foundation from which they can immediately start making important and exciting choices rather be faced with a list of "core skills" to grind through first. |

.
You are right, You are Brilliant!!!
Every army in the world should adopt your philosophy, instead of mock battles conducted to train troops, we should throw all our new recruits onto the front lines and just let the metal hit the meat.
I will contact my local United States Army representative and tell him they are doing it wrong Immediately. |

thanks! make sure to also mention that they should invent clone technology first, or else might think you're crazy. |

Lol, probably. But really, most actual new players need the academy to get use to playing without geting ROFLStomped by Protobear Death Squads. I see it more like. "Here, take a few matches to get use to the controls.... Now.... go ahead and die horribly"
I've been pushing for a new idea in matchmaking, just having 2 or 3 choices, 1 pays out really well, 1 doesn't. So that way the newbies can get their face kicked in then go to the low ranks and get their SP and learn. They don't need much cash anyways because militia fits are cheap. |

you know, I'm not necessarily against that. this idea is about reducing the need for an academy, but if we still had one anyways it wouldn't bother me. especially if it limited what level of gear you can spawn with and you could choose when to go in instead of it deciding for you. |
