I also feel that the thing to do is keep going. Although a lot of feedback has been collected, certainly the continued development, builds and player feedback will help continue to improve the game.
At some point though PS4 development needs to begin in earnest and then it's probably more of a matter of CCP resources and what the development plan is.
Does the game get 'rebuilt' with a different engine and software tools? Or is it migrated from one platfrom to another? What is the CCP development staff looking like at that time - are there more developers? Are the current developers more efficient and so they can effectively continue on with PS3 support and make serious strides on PS4 development?
I think these are questions for CCP to consider. I think shutting down the game, while it will allow them to focus, will have greater negative effects including missing the player feedback, loosing the player base, and perhaps stunting their effectiveness when making the PS4 version.
It's still basically a beta version of a game, and I don't think they have learned everything yet they need to. I think trying to make a PS4 beta version of Dust 514 after shutting down the PS3 version will probably be the nail in the coffin.
I feel like they need to get it right now on the PS3, not only with the game, but with their use of player feedback, their staff priorities and the communication skills....

The BF4 trailer is pretty impressive, I have to say. Having Dust with that level of graphics, destructibility, varied terrains and scale of the battles would be epic.
I think it comes down to CCP though, and what they can accomplish. If I had confidence they could put out a version of Dust that was equivalent to the BF4 trailer, then sure - I'd be willing to wait.
But given their development path, communication, skill at listening to player feedback, patch and release timing/choices, followup with help tickets, etc.... if they take this game offline, I'm not sure they'd do much but loose players. Given the reviews thus far, I'm not sure folks would have the confidence to come back and try again (maybe)
I see their best bet as still moving forward on the current platform; I think they really need to generate some player and industry confidence before they fade to black with a "we'll be back in 3 years with a new client, and then we'll show you what's up for real" statement.... |
