When CCP was presenting their unified vision of EVE and Dust, they showed a cube model with EVE and Dust's influence marked, but then a set of arrows leading from a set of question marks, indicating what they had planned for as a possible third game within the same universe.
Consider that the "Future Vision" trailer from 2012 mentions both orbital strikes and "air strikes". I and many others thought that was hinting at carrier launched Fighter Drones being able to provide strikes for Dust players. I thought that might even add some neat gameplay, as then Figther specialists in Dust could take their aircraft up to shoot down the EVE-launched drones.
And then this happened:

Take a second and imagine it.
EVE in space.
Dust on the ground.
And a fully realized EVR that influences both directly.
Launch from carriers in EVE and attack other fighters or EVE ships, or fly down into the atmosphere of a planet to provide heavier air support for Dust players, with the Dust players being able to shoot back with their Fighters the same as EVE players could with their turrets.
Three games. Three different targets audiences. One universe.

Actually, the clone thing is something I forgot to mention. If you look a the gameplay CCP uploaded, you'll notice a clone transfer notification after the match ends.
It's almost as if this is already what they were thinking even while just making a proof-of-concept. |

EVR actually looks like a much better game then Dust. I am still hopeful for Dust, but EVR looks awesome. However the Rift already works for Half Life so I don't see why it couldn't work for Dust as well, just incorporate EVR into Dust on the PS4 release, Sony has already hinted not so subtly about Rift on PS4. Why split into 3 games when EVR could fit into Dust so easily already? |

[Edit]: I think that would be a huge boost for Dust and interconnectivity between the two games. Dust would immedaitely draw in all the Ace Combat, X-wing-Tie Fighter and Wing Commander crowd along with the FPS people. the EVR part can play as fighters and bombers in Dust missions, or if you really don't want any FPS, just have the fligth sim section have its own game modes, one for EVE battles and one for their own space conflict. Fighters have already been confirmed, and the Rift is a PC peripheral. Sony has made their own Track-IR 3D VR headset, and maybe CCP will enable that, but I like the idea of EVR being another PC game that interacts with both, rather than another console title. |
