After trying out a few things I fail too see the point of an alt character
Why split my time sp and isk farming/grinding 2 characters, when all that searnt p and isk could all go to the one character. Plus my existing skills can be used on both characters BTW tanks suck, I could have spent that time getting an extra 250k on my main character, what a waste that was |

Creating a second or third toon on 1 PSN account does not serve any real purpose other just having fun. However, if you create another PSN Acc and then create a toon on that Acc then you gain passive sp for that toon. More PSN accs the more toons earning passive sp.
Even if you do not play these alts they will have over 2 mil SP in 9 weeks time just from passive SP and you initial 500k starter SP. |

I hit the cap 2-3 days after reset but still I've always viewed the alt accounts as somewhat useless. I'd rather push my main as far and as fast as I can; I can't do that wasting time on an alt.
BTW, tanks don't suck. You just suck at using them. |

If you mean on the same account, simple: For testing. even IF you can use that SP on your main, doesn't mean you're going to spend your points on stuff you're not sure on.
Maybe you're bored of your current char and you want to see how it'd be to focus o something else, many know spreading your skills to try to be a Jack of all trades is a terrible idea on Dust, even if you could be getting SP for your main, if you don't want to, then its worse to try to push it.
There's also having one char to play with friends, to have in a friend's corp, to manage your own corp, or to infiltrate other corps. |

I know a guy that's got a pretty sweet Vayu. Squaded up with him the other day and everybody in the tank got enough WP's for each to have their own WP and he almost got enough for 2 OB himself. Never lost a single tank in the match either even though we had most of the enemy team gunning for us most of the match. |

tanks still suck...
and having alt characters means your doubling up on the same skill set
also the "and dont SP cap" is a very important point I included in the title for a reason
I don't hit the SP cap, so when playing an alt I'm also wasting potential good SP I could have gotten for my main Even if I did make another account for passive SP collection what am I going to use it on, half the time the same skills as I already got...
e.g. I play my alt to earn 100k to spend on some unrelated dropship skill mean while my main earns nothing I could have used that time earning that 100k faster on my better main and spent it on the same skill I would have spent it on my alt had i used it, net effect my main remains unchanged no matter what i do, so if i dont SP cap dont bother with alts

Regardless of whether you hit the SP cap, gaining passive SP on an alt can be invaluable to explore new possibilities in terms of roles and playstyles. Because the SP is earnt passively, it requires no real commitment from you to grind SP, and gives you the option of, for example, using weapons you would not otherwise use. The time spent on an alternate character may have no tangible or immediate effect on your main, however it does give you the advantage of allowing you to develop preferences for particular play styles and inform decisions about the way you'll build your main. An easy example of this would be if you had tried and tested tanks on your alt, you would no longer be in the position where you've wasted 250k SP on a role that you don't enjoy playing and probably won't play again. |

example 1 using an alt
main get 50k in passive alt gets 250k in grinding e.g. alt get skilled in hvy skills main is still 50k higher then normal alt has 250k used in hvy skills
example 2 using only a main
main gets 50k passive, plus equivalent 250k in grinding in less time cause i have a better character then alt i spend 250k in hvy skills just like the previous alt i still have 50k left over plus it took me less time to get that 250k cause i was using a better character plus the hvy also benefits from the other skills i already have on the main character

If you like playing Dust 514, or atleast like the shallow RPG mechanics in Dust 514, then you're going to reach the cap with your main character easily, probably within 2-3 days. For the remainder of the week you have the choice between either getting effectively no SP or rolling another character. Personally I hate the idea of an "alt" character and the only reason why they're necessary is because of the moronic SP cap CCP has implemented. |

There are aspects of the game beyond simple FPS play. Maybe your alt can sneak into someones corp and be an apparently loyal spy. Maybe you need an alt to (I hate the word but I'll use it) meta-game in the forums. Heck, maybe you'd like to be able to do a bit of RP and get into more than one character race.
Use your imagination... or don't bother with alts if you don't want to.
I'd suggest this game is a lot more fun if you aren't just fixated on how quickly you can earn isk/sp all the time. |

Alts are fun. Create one just to practice Inertia deaths. I bet you can't die more than 58 times in a match. I like to use them to make the other players wonder, "WTF?"

Like in EVE, you keep a main always training on your account, and your alt is for miscellaneous purposes. There's not much need or reason to use an alt in Dust though (yet). Alts are often used for holding an otherwise empty corporation/alliance, scouting, market price checks, and spying. Also for shitposting on the forums and scamming people. |

You're better off making alternative accounts for that purpose, plus the ones on alt accounts can passively gain SP while your alts on the same can't, which leads me to the question.... why exactly don't your alts on the same account also gain passive SP?
I mostly agree with the TC, the only reason I use alt characters on my account is to try stuff out without wasting SP/ISK. |

I know, many people are all concerned about maxing their ISK/SP... personally, that is not where I derive my fun. I focus on having fun and somehow, big surprise, I do have fun... and I generally still would hit my cap. I don't care. I'll still play my main as it's my main whether capped or not.
I've got an alt with a booster on it.. and I'll probably put that one through the vehicle specialization academy. This won't happen anytime soon of course... but if I do get bored I'll have something new to try by then. There is absolutely no rush... as even if you start later than another you can still max out a particular role and excel in it.
Edit: Worrying about being "behind" all the time is potentially not a road to having fun in the game. |

Yeah there are plenty of exceptions 1. You buy a passive booster 2. Use a different PS3 account 3. For testing crap out 4. For antagonizing the enemy 5. For hitting SP cap

Hence the title, "for people who dont SP cap" If you're not SP capping you are definitely not earning isk/sp as quickly as possible
BTW how do you know I'm not just trolling with an alt?? |

This guy gets it!
IMO, many people might enjoy this game more if they didn't treat it so much like work. Just play, have fun, and your SP will accumulate all on it's own.
As for alts, I have one, specced drastically different from my main. When I feel like a change of pace, I'll play my alt. Simple.
Sure, I could use another PSN account and gain passively on both, if all my friends weren't on this account, or if I cared at all about reaching the cap as quickly and efficiently as possible, but I don't. I know I'll reach it fast enough, without even trying, through normal play and, if I don't, so what?
To me, it's just a game, not a job. Best not to take it too seriously, IMO. |

If you SP cap in two days it is nice to still get full SP on an alt.
Respecs are rare so if you want another class you need an alt.
Example: I have a logi main but I also want to play a heavy....so i made an alt.
A new alt can play in academy...it is fun playing against players with the same SP/gear you have.
New crap is always in the pipe. Having an alt with a big unspent pool of SP allows you to use that new crap when it comes out.
Stuff gets nerfed. Having alts in deep cryo earning passive SP over time in an alt PSN account is insurance against your main getting nerfed into oblivion.
Does that clear up why you should have alts? |
