Note: Written on a tablet. Bear with me on grammar and format.
I'll begin by stating that I was actually holding onto this for when I myself run for the CPM candidacy but I feel that this is something that needs to be started on sooner rather than later, thusly I am proposing it to the current CPM.
The new player tutorials seem a bit cluttered and seem to overwhelm the player. In my opinion, this is bad for new player retention. New Player Retention almost always starts at the Tutorial - if it is too difficult to grasp than it will be less appealing to stick with the game. I understand that certain measures are being taken to improve the new player experience, but I also feel that my ideas can assist in that endeavor.
First of all, the best tutorial isn't always the one that holds your hand through everything. Players usually already have a firm concept of how the controls work so we can remove that bit entirely - or simply point them in the direction of the controller layout early on.
Next, we need to present them with not only an educational experience but a rewarding one. Players will be more likely to stick around if they are given things in return, much like you would at any job. This can be done in forms of SP, SP Boosters (1, 3 or 7 day), ISK or Assets.
Now the big question is what should they be rewarded for? They shouldn't be something simple like opening up the Neocom - they need to feel as though they've earned that reward much as we do in Eve Online. It should be something moderately challenging like reviving 10 allies with a Nanite Injector or repairing 500 Armor of allies with a Repair Tool.
Then you need to break it down by the Dropsuit and what each one specializes in. Assault are obviously better at combat, so giving incentive for landing 10 kills in a Match would be something more akin to what that dropsuit should perform. Logistics would be the easiest simply due to it's specialized nature.
While doing this, the link between Eve/Dust needs to be explained briefly. Not something so much as every fiber of what New Eden is, just something toinform them of what all that Link is and the difference between a Dust Mercenary and a Capsuleer. We should also inform them of all the game has to offer - again, this should be brief. Let them explore it on their own and go as far down the rabbit hole as they honestly want to go. If staying in High Sec Public Matches is something that suits them, by all means allow it.
Lastly, this should all be -OPTIONAL-. Much like in Eve Online, you should be able to skip the tutorial process all together if you already have a firm grasp of what you're doing. Even still, certain aspects of the tutorial should be entirely optional. If I like how Logistics plays, I shouldn't be forced to play a Heavy or use Vehicles - but I should be aware that they exist.
Unfortunately I have to cut this short as typing on a Tablet is insanely stressful on the fingers - I had intended to have more substance and depth to this but for now it will do. Thank you for reading |

NPC career agents offering rewards for achievement in battle.
Assault Line: Score (X) kills with (Y) weapon in a match Logistics: Heal or buff (X) amount in a match Scout: Place (X) beacons in a match Heavy: Destroy (X) targets in a match
There's only a limited number of these that are offered (Just like tutorial career agents), but the rewards are juicy enough to keep a Duster interested in that career for a while (AUR, Skill books, fat ISK purses, gear). |

Pilot: Be spawn point for (X) mercs in a match. Commando: Score (X) kills with melee or sidearm.
Important note to make, you must get these missions from the agent, they aren't benchmark achievements. I can't get the commando award for scoring 10 kills if I didn't talk to the agent about getting the mission. Missions are an important driving force behind EVE Online, and I feel they can be implemented in DUST 514 so that the game isn't senseless meat grinding and ground pounding (Like it currently is).

I can only agree with such things. What makes the success of many FPS is the constant feeling of achievements and progression. But before giving basic missions to newbies, i'd go with more interactive tutorials covering the basic mecanics of the game.
Like fitting. I'd rather see an interactive tutorial with the player building specific fits with directions. Explaining him along the way what he is doing and why. There could be 3/4 types of fit tutorial all granting a reward. Like a BPO militia soldier of each type and ISK prizes.
You could do something like that for most parts of the game : Learning skills through the use of certificates as it's been discussed over and over on these forums. For those unfamiliar with the concept, a certificate is a pack of skills you're kinda hinted to get to be efficient in a specific role.
In dust it could be something like Assaut - basic certificate : dropsuit command 3 + Racial assaut suit lvl 1 + weaponry lvl 3 + whatever.
And you could reward players for each certificate : something to their soldier file showing that would be visible by the other players "oh that guy's got assaut elite certificate, cool" or small ISK bounty, or hell modules or whatever.
Then there's the in-game tutorials.
That's something i really care about. Dust has many things that can be destabilizing to a FPS player. And it needs in-game tutorials to cover all the basics. Most FPS have that and its not usefull. For Dust, it would be :
- Order vehicle, shoot at fake target to learn range, cook nade, use NI, use uplink, die and respawn, set orders, change fit, what is a cru ? , etc.. etc.. etc...
A pack of 4/5 small scripted tutorials would be a good investment. Obviously you'd get a reward. My choice would be SP (pretty much the ones you start with atm.. evil laugh !).
Regarding what you're suggesting, like doing X actions getting you rewards etc.. It's also a good idea. But not as much linked to NPE as it is linked to global player retention over time. It's like BF3 or MAG having medals. "Hey that guy's got 5000 grims !" etc..
It gives bragging rights. And a small reward wouldnt be too bad as well. Also, if Dust ever wants to get ps3 trophies, it will need such mecanics to make it work.
- As an assault, kill 30 enemies. (+ 250k isk each time) Get 100 of those : get enemy nightmare award. + 5 millions isk - As a Logi, heal 15 teammates (+150k isk each time) Get 400 of those : get Mr Soldier & Dr Clone award + 5 millions isk.
Etc.. Obviously, you could have some lower types of reward (10 kill, 5 revives etc..) for new players as well. Also giving an award.
Everything that will give a true feeling of having an actual career as a mercenary is good. And that starts with training. |

And Laurent, I heartily agree. As it stands the DUST tutorial are "Read this 5 page essay about this particular aspect of the game" or "Watch this short video about how this works." A hands on "Let's actually teach you how a fitting works and what fits work best with what suits." (a la EVE Career Agents) is EXACTLY what DUST needs. Please mention this at the next CSM/CPM meet.

Iron wolf even started a thread about how the community would see the New Player Experience and it's filled with valuable feedback. Mostly, everyone is on the same page which is rare enough among the community to be noted : NPE is one of the key. And the more complete it is, the better. |

I like whereits going. Missions do need to be included and I think we can include them by showing a set of matches inhi-sec public games. Think of it as hi sec faction warfare without having to wait for an eve player tocreate a match. You only get the reward if youre victorious in the match.
Hell we could even bring back Skill Spikes as a reward for 'storyline' missions but all of this is for another topic. |
