For this I'm going to have to organise myself a little bit more that I'm used to.

-1- Intro
So Dust 514 is this massive Game support within New Eden, with capsuleer pilots doing shady backroom deals in the furthest and darkest depths of space, running missions for factions to save a captured political prisoner, destroying pirates, and we on the ground are supposed to be the hardest men and women ready to do the dirtiest jobs for money.
That being said what we do now is fight in instances or "flashpoints" for ISK which while entertaining feels somewhat stagnant. I have been with Dust since Chormosome went into Open Beta and have had my ups and downs with the game but absolutely enjoyed in, and more so in recent weeks where I have put more of myself into my character as well as why I fight in the game.
And this is what I feel is missing from DUST 514 right now, which is present in EVE online and a big part of the MMO aspect that doesn't in anyway constrast, overshadow, or step on the toes of the FPS aspect. My levels of Immersion into the role of a mercenary are entirely self created, as do I find are my explanations for the "flashpoint" instances.
-2- Immersion DUST 514 and EVE side Immersion
So one of the things I love in games is getting lost in the lore and associated ideals conflicts and situations that arise in game.
Who do I help? Why do I help them? Should I do this for that extra monetary gain, or is the karma of this act enough to make me say no? DO I KNOW WHY IM DOING THIS OR WHAT IS GOING ON?
In Dust 514 and most other shooters this is not present, though it is present in MMO games.
DO I KNOW WHY IM DOING THIS OR WHAT IS GOING ON?
To me this is a huge question as a mercenary in DUST what am I doing when I am fighting these battles, what are their significance, why does whoever is hiring me want this done, what is going on during these fights?
When players enter fights, be it Ambush, Skirmish, or one of the other variants on these game types it always comes to mind what is the back story behind this encounter. Now while I understand most FPS players don't care about the lore aspect of the game what they probably do care about and have never seen before in a game is an explaination of the combat scenario they are being presented with.
No other games do this. Battlefield does not go into depth before the match explaining the game type, what the goals are, why the destruction of something is necessary, nor what the opposing teams hope to gain out of the fight. No other FPS game does this, and for DUST which is decidedly an MMOFPS this would be key in retaining interest and replayability.
For Example- Before an ambush match while players are lining up in the Warbarge and short intro hologram is played while the VI intelligent (affectionately calle space *****) explains the mission in a briefing like manner, what the goals are, why they need to be achieved, the results of that action.
E.G- So in the Warbarge before an ambush match the VI would say something like "Recent scans have revealed and number of hostile operators within territory we though was secure. These threats cannot be left unchecked and as such they must be eliminated before they can become a detriment to our operations in this sector. Your contract is to find and ensure the elimination of the operators by destroying their limited clone supplies, however the warprice of this region is low extensive clone reinforcements will not be present. Ambush and overwhelm the enemy."
Here players know why they fight, he circumstances regardless of corporation doing the hiring. In fact when clones appear on the map the VI might even say "Ambush Imminent".
This would add a level of immersion to the players experience actually making them feel like a member of a elite operation that is going to reward them with ISK and resources that they can then use to tackle more complex and difficult missions. It would definitely be better than hearing the VI say talk about AURUM and not suiciding in public.
No mercenary would do that anyway.
In EVE this is different, whenever a play picks up a contract/mission there is always a long explanation of what this is happening who is involved and what the significance of this job will entail. Again I understand most FPSers would care about this and in a PvP game you can't really have a pop up with mission goals and rewards pop up before a match, however something like explaining what the significant of the mission is would greatly benefit player enjoyment (IMO!)

this list could go on, but this game is anything but immersive. if anything- they have perfected jarringly ripping you out of any immersion in the rare occurrences it happens that you get immersed.
Hold on Im not talking mechanics of game play Im talking atmospheric things, changes that can be made by CCP that minimally affect game play, the nuances rather than the big issues.
Just wait till im done. |
