So I downloaded DUST a few months ago and played for a little bit - did a few matches and got curbstomped (I got maybe one kill?) - didn't spend any SP or ISK. I hated the controller for FPS so I decided I would pick it up again after I got a wireless KB/mouse.
Fast forward a couple months (or whatever - I don't remember the exact time frame) and I get my KB/mouse and decide to try out DUST again. While the controls are a bit more comfortable (still a bit awkward using them sitting on the couch rather than at my desk but still feels better than a DS controller), I'm still super bewildered at what I'm supposed to be doing.
Am I missing something here? Is there a PVE tutorial that teaches what the icons mean and how to work the controls? When I enter a match all I can think to do is look for people to shoot (I die a lot). I'm hearing notifications about hacking objectives but I have no clue what that is all about. Most of the 'tutorials' I've seen in the game involve the neocon and coming from EVE I have no problem navigating that or understanding skills or the market, etc. I would love some n00b videos showing me wtf to do ala EVE. This seems a lot more complicated than your run of the mill shooter.
Some random occurrences in need of explanation:
On the skills screen I remember seeing the basic dropsuit command skill opened up other skills at level 1, 2, and 3. In the skill description there are no added bonuses. Are there dropsuits that require DSC at 4 or 5? Right now I see no use to train it above 3 (I would love a program like DUSTMon - and no a spreadsheet is not an alternative) - wtf is up with that? There seemed like there were a few skills like that.
Here was a sorta common occurrence. I'm running across an open field trying to rejoin the fight. I hear a noise that sounds somewhat like a chainsaw, 'hmm, I think I can guess what that is. I'm probably gonna die.' Fade to red - yup I got run over. Thinking I'm pretty clever, I respawned with a swarm launcher. I want to see how this thing works so I aim it at random stuff and click my mouse buttons. Nothing. Hmm, maybe I need to lock on or aim using the right mouse button. I go toward the murderous vehicle and take aim. Nothing. Splat. Still no idea how to use that dang thing.
The cluster map: is there really a use for this? Can we move to other systems/planets? I zoom in to planet level and see these district squares but I'm unable to interact with them. Is this a corp-only feature? Derp - so lost.
Local - is local literally all DUST mercs? Or are there a few different locals and we can move around? Seems weird.
I saw some ramdon helpfulish posts in other threads, but need more clarification: 'Hack a node: 100 WP' Ok, so by simply paying attention I know hacking has something to do with the null canon shooting the enemy MCC or something and we need to hack them. How do I do this - just run up to it and press (and hold I assume) the action button?
'Res a teammate: 60 WP' Is there an easy way to find friendly bodies to res up? Which modules do this? (etc) This goes for re-supplying and healing teammates. No idea about this stuff. I assume you need specialized skills, suits and modules.
'Are you playing in a squad? Join LFSquad channel.' Excellent idea, but I want to at least get the basics down first so I don't become too much of a burden to a team. Are there any other good public channels that are a worth joining? Maybe a forum thread with them all listed?

To hack something. The next time you log in look at your settings. Tab over to kb/m controls, the action key is likely the button for hacking.
To rez someone You need to have a nanoinjector fit into your equipment slot. The militia injector does not require skill.
The starmap Is for monitoring status and progress of Faction warfare and planetary conquest. I suggest googling planetary conquest and faction war in eve to learn more about that. There is too much to cover in one post. |

I hear you on the swarm launcher - it does have a tool tip, written in tiny text (which if one sat as close to the TV as one to a monitor, it could be read) about holding down the fire button. You need to point at an enemy, hold down the fire button until you get tone, then release (also after release you wont be able to run for about two seconds - good luck with that!).
On the other hand, when a vehicle doesn't manage to scoot behind cover, it can be an entirely satisfying kill (just watch out for snipers - try and shoot with atleast a wall to one side, to block out half the field from an easy sniper shot (and if they shoot from the other side, then you know where they are (and can sometimes just go up and around and shoot them in the back of the head)))
Also I too didn't know anyone could hack, at first. Try going up to yellow (or red) things that are on your radar - it'll prompt you to use the action button.
Sadly the important ones have a terminal and you have to walk around till you find the screen - then you can hack.
Hacking gets you skill points, so it's good to do. Sometimes you can even hack abandoned enemy vehicles! Try and stand at the side when doing so, though, in case they jump back in. |

1. LFSquad channel is perfect for you. You can find random members who will drop in or out. Not as serious as you think. 2. Follow the leader. Seriously, you know blue is your team color, right? Even without squading up, watch your teammates. 3. You can join squads while waiting for battle, if squads are not locked, and have open slots, another member can't hurt them. 4. chat... Turn it on even if you don't have a headset. Every once in a while you can catch people talking about the game. If you have a mic, people will go out of their way to explain things to you. |

Local is where you are in New Eden at a given time. Where you are between matches depends on your corporation I think. If you look in local, you'll see other Dustbunnies and Eve players (capsuleers) who happen to be in that same system. You can identify Eve players because they have faces. Eve players fly spaceships around and change local channels as they change systems. Dustbunnies on the other hand are magically teleported to a new system every time they enter a battle. You can see what system, constellation, and region you are in outside of battle by looking at the top left of your screen. The starmap gives you a sense of the size of eve or where you are supposedly, but for what you're doing, it should have 0 impact on you. |

Thanks. I think I'll take you up on that offer. Not sure I'll be able to play much the next two weekends (RL interference) but I might be on a little bit on weeknights.
Regarding gaming learning curves I'm sure you've seen this: http://s930.photobucket.com/user/SirVinnie/media/EVE%20Screens/Planet%20Stuff/EveOnlineLearningCurve.jpg.html |

I think the next thing I try to figure out in the game is hacking. I'll probably die a dozen times per game as I learn but I'm using the free militia gear so it's no big deal.
I think I actually did try to hold the mouse button down as I was trying to kill the LAV but I got ran over before it could do anything. When using a swarm launcher are you unable to move? How noobish is it considered to be run over in the open by a vehicle (I felt pretty silly)? |

Hey if people don't mind having an ubern00b then why not. I'll check it out. :)
I do have the super basic stuff down (point and click to shoot, red it bad - blue is good, etc). I also know most of the DUST/EVE interaction stuff - so I'm familiar with skill training, the market, fw, sov, etc.
I did turn chat on and heard a couple people chatting a little bit. Nothing relevant to the current game though - probably varies quite a bit from match to match. I have a bluetooth headset lying around somewhere - I need to dig it up and see if it works on my PS3. |

Try DUST University. They can help you figure out what you want to do, and will suggest where you want to put your SP when you find out what you want. :D
As for everything else... It's really just that you came into the game at the wrong time. Recently, they've added the Academy feature, for new players. I don't know if that counts you (Since you joined before Uprising...).
It's really just finding a playstyle that works for you. I prefer to play a defensive/supportive role on the battlefield. I actually dislike using pure offensive weapons, as mindless violence bug me. I know I shouldnt be playing a FPS if I didn't like the violence, but here I can actually play tactically without being murdered.
Anyways, because I like to play a Supportive role the most, I put my SP into Logistics suits and Sniper equipment. It doesn't make me a huge threat (Although my pure skill does that for me...), but it racks in WP and I can keep my squad alive, by supplying ammo and restoring health. I use the Sniper Equipment mostly to scout for my team. Say, my squad is heading over to Alpha. I would take my Sniper Rifle and deplete clones at Alpha to ease up the hurt on my team.
For a Defensive Role... I honestly don't play Heavy as much as I play Logistics, but I still play it often enough to say I'm pro at it. It's basically me trying to run around and fend off clones from a certain point. I'm a master of Focused Aggression with a HMG.
An Offensive Role is not my forte, but I still pull it off while I'm using free suits or just plain Assault-Based suits. I basically run and gun. I die an awful lot (I get ballsy sometimes...), but I rack up kills almost as much as I do as a Heavy, and I can fend off a point long enough (Only a couple seconds) to get my squad to spawn on the point and focus fire on the enemy trying to hack it.
But yea. I have no idea if this is what you were looking for or not, but still It helps, doesn't it?
EDIT: Remember though, it's not so black and white. A Logistics doesn't HAVE to Support. I run Logistics sometimes carrying only Explosives and a Nanohive for myself. Heavies don't have to play an offensive/defensive role either. You can just put a Sniper Rifle on a Heavy suit and enjoy being able to take on Anti-Snipers. An Assault suit can be made into a pure pilot suit, instead of being on the ground. That's why I like DUST 514. Customization in this game outranks everything else. EVER. |
