I was thinking about this the other day about how it would be nice to have a second character and the ability to earn passive XP. Immediately I started to think why not have an Aurum implant that would allow a secondary character to just get passive experience like a standard character. Then I got to thinking, and the whole thing breaks down in your head pretty quickly in pretty obvious ways.
I played EVE for about 2 years, and I completely understand/accept/endorse the rationale why this would/could/should work. Eve is a subscription service and you pay your dues in order to get to play the game, and you get passive XP on one character. If you want passive XP on more than one character, you just go out and buy a second character and pay for it. Essentially, you pay for the right to have this second XP source.
Now this doesn't work in Dust, because a PSN account is $0, Dust is $0, and the subscription is $0. It seems to me pretty easy to understand how you get a second character that gets a passive XP bonus. You do it under a second PSN account.
What reason would there be for not making a second character under another PSN ID? It may be buried in the user's agreement that you aren't supposed to do this. I actually skimmed all of this because of the NDA back in the day and I am just weird like that. I don't remember anything like this, but I don't recall everything about everything I ever read, but I really wonder how you stop it?
When you start talking about the meta-game, I have a second PSN account all to myself. Why? Because I was going to try to befriend a group of people that collectively my clan had a beef with so we could follow what they were doing. Is that really silly? Oh yeah, but a lot of people who read something like this are thinking about it from an entirely different perspective. Is it totally something that happens every day in EVE? YES! The meta is also something that is, and for good reason, considered one of the most important parts of the entire game.
Briefly, to discuss the user license agreement, I know my PS3 has more than one PSN ID on it, and it makes sense. Friends, family, and that disappointingly rare and special breed of female that plays video games without being pretentious about it, etc. Essentially, this would be incredibly hard to police since there are legitimate reasons why someone with the same IP Number would connect to Dust from multiple account. It doesn't seem like it would make sense for CCP to try to police it since policing free accounts almost inherently seems like a losing proposition, and CCP is very encouraging and generally cool in a hands-off sort of way when it comes to the meta.
So the answer I was thinking earlier really begs a new question entirely. Why don't secondary characters get passive XP? I think the answer is clearly that they probably should. Really the whole thing that they don't just seems like a hold-over from EVE, and with a company like CCP, its probably that they were so busy trying to make this game that they didn't stop to analyze if this system still made sense under a new model. The only conceivable reason why I could see not letting it happen is because it might be seen as encouraging more characters? I don't know, the second and third character are also free, and you don't know about the limitation until after you make them, so if anything, I bet that this policy as it is right now and how obvious the work-around is, promotes the making of at least as many new characters if not more. What is more is that for people who don't take the steps to do the obvious work-around, they're either not playing Dust as much, which I have to imagine is not as good for CCP as if they were, or they will make one under the current rules and get frustrated with how bad their second character will always be, which is also probably bad for CCP.
Maybe I am missing something. What do you guys think?
(For the record, if it matters, I do not use a second account for my second character in Dust. I use my main just because I don't care that much about this, but I think it could only help the game if they made this change.) |

Well, yes, but it seems pretty silly or obvious why most people aren't really going to be into this idea, as such, I think it would be wise for CCP to take a look at whether or not this current policy is really all that beneficial or in the best interest of the game. |

Aikuchi Tomaru wrote:Why getting an alt after all? I don't see how you would benefit from that in Dust. Many people in Eve use Alts to make money. Especially many people who focus on PvP. They have alt chars for PvE so they can go ratting and make money to support their main.
But in Dust? There only is PvP and I doubt you will need other skills when they add PvE, Making money? The only way to get money is playing matches anyways. So you would just do the same with the second char anyways.
While that is true, there isn't one build that is the end-all-be-all. Also embedded in your EVE comparison is your own answer. You get the alt to make money, perhaps. A lot of times, you also have the alt in EVE with decidedly different skills, rather than waste time (and what is ultimately in game and real money) to learn how to do industrial or mining type activities.
So how that relates to Dust is that we all more-or-less have to specialize, and we will most likely have to continue to specialize for years to come, so I decide I could do the assault rifle and grenade bit. I could also want to get really good at flying a drop ship or use advanced tanks. I will eventually be able to do both on my main, but considering the relatively easy-to-obtain weekly XP cap, it just makes sense that maybe I don't want to wait six months or a year to do both, by which point there will be other things added to Dust that I will also doubtlessly want to experience too. It just makes more sense to go do something else where I can still get XP and still advance my enjoyment of the game.
So there is a point to it all beyond just ISK. |
