Surely heavies should show up on my radar if I'm an assault or scout player. The amount of times I've been in my scout suit with precision enhancer equipped and been snuck up on by a heavy while hacking a point!
Is this a bug?
P.S LAV and tanks make noise right? so why don't they show up either. This whole murder taxi thing wouldn't be a problem if I could actually see them coming at me on my radar.
Thoughts? |

The math on the scan range suggests even with extremely high skills and modules you still can't see very far, I don't remember the exact numbers but something like 15-20m was the theoretical max....which isnt very far. |

On my scout suit my scan precision is 45db plus I'm running a precision enhancer which gives my and extra 10% (4.5db) so any thing that makes a noise of 40.5db and above should show up on my radar right?
A heavies scan profile is 65db.
the scan range is 10m so if i'm hacking a point and staring at my radar If a heavy spawns I should be able to see him and react. instead I just seem to hear the HMG and then death.
Are you saying he's more than 10m away so that's why he's not on my radar?
Maybe I need more explanantion on the radar. Because things pop up on it that are certainly more than 10m away.

I agree that Heavies don't need nerfing. but I'm looking for consistency with my radar. If they got an armor buff but showed up on my radar thats fine. I just wanna see them! |

Unless you're using an active scanner device the onboard scanner isn't effective outside of large range in front of you. It's never worked properly either from my understanding.

So I have a 360 degree 10m scan radius and then a longer scan length in front of me?
Is that what you're saying? |

So I have a 360 degree 10m scan radius and then a longer scan length in front of me? Is that what you're saying? Let me clarify a bit. Your scanner won't find people behind you unless they're almost on top of you. But in front if someone is hiding behind terrain if you get within a certain distance they'll show up.
Scanning in general - unless the active ones - aren't reliable.
Sorry I don't know the number ranges - as a heavy this hasn't really mattered to me since I always keep someone behind me. |

It worst than that, the scan actualy scanner as efficiency based on the point of the compass your target is one. Almosy everything is invisible behind you. Even tanks.
No amount of skills makes targets behind you visible.

Scan ranges are ridiculously short when it comes to vehicles As for heavies the problem is really more with the complete lack of sound we make while moving around on foot
Inb4 Scouts say they should move completely silent |

That little circle on your radar (the inside one) is 20m out.
Your scan radius is half that.
10m is NOT very far at all. A pistol is effective out to 60m. Keep that in mind. Also, when you look at someone they show up on everyone's radar. This goes for you as well. If someone is looking at a red, they're on your radar. There's no "increased" scan radius in front of you. Simply what you or someone else is currently targeting.
Shooting (for example a bluedot in your tank... towards the MCC) doesn't increase your scan profile. Nothing does, not even running.
There are a tremendous number of misconceptions around about how radar works... generally based on other games I find.
Hope this helps some people... since even in this thread people appear misinformed. |

for some reason ccp decided to nerf the **** out of scout scan range, the one thing that made them stand out from everyone else. then they gave that ability to everyone in the form of one piece of equipment, which nobody uses
wasnt so long ago that with one mod and the right skill to 5 you could see a good 50 meters, why they changed it only they can say |

It makes me happy that you don't see a tremendous number of people running scanners.

The problem is scanners seem VERY unreliable. I used them a bunch for a while. Id be LOOKING at a guy about 50m out, scan him with the advanced version and he wouldnt appear. I would scan an installation, see its clear, only to see a heavy pop out around the corner in front of me.
It works well to track "blobs" but thats about it, it seems to buggy/unreliable to be used as proper recon. |

We all knew passive scanning was cluster kittened. But the other day convinced me that it really does get much much worse.
In a Skirmish match I was trolling around in my tank alt when I decided to run down this red dot up a road on a ridge. After I killed him, I turned the turret around a bit to see if there's anything to shoot at when lo and behold, there's a sniper happily firing away inches away from my left set of tracks. So close to the tank that it was a miracle I didn't run him over. He even moved a step or two away from my tank and continued to be oblivious to me and my turret aimed at him for like half a minute. |

This should be the way it works, but it's all broken right now.
Scanning, from behind, has never really worked. I'm not sure if that's a bug or a feature.
I can so though, that right now, scanning basically doesn't work. The only reason you ever see anyone is that someone has line of sight on them, or they are in range of a map item like a CRU or Turret. Everything else right now doesn't seem to work. |
