I recall an article talking up how there would be so many players in one match. 256 on each side, plus one OIC directing the battle from an MCC. (256 + 1) * 2 = 514, hence the name Dust 514
What happened to this? |

Basically the short of it is that they couldn't get it to work with the hardware on the PS3 with the graphics they are using.
They have stated that they plan on extending the size of battles once it moves to the PS4, where they say they'll be able to use their own custom built Carbon Engine. |

I don't recall this. As I remember from fanfest they stated they would NOT be using the full maps in the foreseeable future. plus the only increase in players pre match would be 24v24 and pc would be 16v16. I also don't recall them saying anything about the carbon engine and only briefly mention that ps4 was on the table but not soonTM |

Because CCP is dedicated to this game, as well as EVE online.
Basically their idea is that there will never be an EVE 2 or DUST 514-2. They will only expand on the current game, and those expansions will eventually include massive overhauls of large parts of the game.
Also, I think my previous post may have been a bit misunderstood, I wasn't indicating they would go to the full massive player count right at the get go, but that they would slowly start increasing player count in battles, which they are already taking steps towards. So we will see things slowly grow towards 24 v 24... 32 v 32 or whatever increment CCP will increase player battles by.

Also: if you were meaning that 514 related to the size of battles, that is incorrect. 514 has to do with the lore. I follow the lore and I don't have any idea what they are trying to do with the name. I do hope it's revealed... one day? |

Hmmm... I definitely read an article talking about the player count and the '514' in the title. I don't see why they can't start with at least 256 players. MAG did, and their environments are way more colorful, plus they had all the airplanes constantly flying over dropping poison gas, bombs, strafing runs, etc. |
