Well, the trolls and the whiners are not going to go away. That's just part of running a forum.
But I do understand where CCP is at with DUST 514. And I am hoping, actually expecting that they can do with DUST what they have done with EVE. What they did with EVE is they started out slow and gradually built a great MMO that has outlasted many of its competitors and has a relatively stable playerbase.
CCP can do that with DUST as well given time. Problem is, this F2P playerbase doesn't have the patience. Apparently CCP wants to build up FPS expertise in-house, and probably believes there is no choice but to go that route if they ultimately want to integrate the game with EVE. Outsourcing the codebase for DUST might create massive integration problems and perhaps a mistranslation of the EVE look-and-feel to DUST.
So here we are. Frankly all the whining over the slow progress is not going to make a dime's worth of difference. CCP can only gain experience with FPS and get the proper fixes and patches in place at a certain rate, and no amount of carpet bombing on the forums is going to change that. If its not fast enough for you, you're welcome to play other FPS games, accumulate passive SP, and come back when the next major patch comes in. But at the end of the day, DUST is a ground-breaking attempt at an FPS MMO (or MMO FPS, as the case may be). This is something very new and different and SUCCESS IS NOT GUARANTEED. And if it does happen IT WON'T BE FAST.
I'm fed up with the b*tching at CCP. You're lucky they are willing to bother listening to the players despite the forum abuse. I level criticism at the game mechanics quite often and I try to make helpful suggestions, but it doesn't help when well-meaning commentary is buried under a stinking pile of whiner posts. I get tired of having to filter through it all to find something worthwhile to read.
tl;dr This is not an ordinary FPS. CCP is doing something new. Have some frigging patience. If you've lost patience, take a break and play something else. Come back later.

As per my comments in the thread on PS2, a lot of those games look pretty (DUST sure doesn't) but the gameplay seems to be rather lacking in depth, i.e. consequences. Hopefully its just a matter of patience on our part.
I really believe that patience is the only way through this period. DUST has very strong MMO overtones, and in terms of MMO development, the similarities are obvious. Its getting rolled out in stages, lots of problems are found and then they slowly get fixed.
Ordinary FPS games aren't brought to market like this. Ordinary FPS games are more or less a final product when they hit the shelves. Some small patches and DLC yeah, but the game itself is standalone. DUST is nothing like that. Its development is more like an MMO.
Its just that we got veteran FPS players in the DUST playerbase and they don't have the patience for an MMO development approach. They want final product from the get-go. Its not going to happen.
The playerbase is probably following an MMO curve, big spike on release followed by a massive decline. If this game is successful though, the decline will bottom out and then slowly increase over a long period of time just like EVE. |
