In this thread I will be showing you how to take proper care of your Ps3 plus some ways to make your ps3 run a little bit faster and smoother. A lot of the information is general and should already be followed. Also this information was gathered from multiple websites so I won't post sources unless you guys really want me to.
The following will be how to take proper care of your ps3
1. Keep your ps3 in a well ventilated (This is VERY important) Have your ps3's vent about 4-6 cm at least away from any walls or anything that could make ventilation hard for it.
2. Keep your ps3 somewhere where the temperature is 41F - 95F (5C - 35C) (If your ps3 overheats the power led will blink 3x and then blink yellow). Place a thermometer by the wall by the ps3's vent (Or 4-6cm away) to see the temperature. If it exceeds the recommended amount move your ps3.
3. I suggest cleaning your ps3 about once a week
-Use a low powered vaccum to suck out the dust out of the PS3's vents, remember to keep the vaccum atleast 2-3cm away from the PS3
-If you using a can of air, use the tube straw and let it blow from 4-6cm away from the PS3 (make sure tube is in correctly as it may fire the tube a damade your PS3) (DO NOT Spray the can upside down as it will release a freezing moisture that may damage electronics)
-If you're cleaning off the outside of your PS3 (Mainly the top and the chrome areas), use a microfibre cloth. The Playstation 3 is prone to scratch easily, typically a microfibre cloth will prevent this. NEVER use paper towels or any other paper based materieals. Including regular hand towels.
4. Shut your ps3 down correctly
-The best way to probably shut down your PS3 is through the remote, hold the PS until you see "shut down system" and X on yes
-NEVER SHUT DOWN BY FLIPPING THE SWITCH FROM THE BACK when it is on (solid green LED)!
5. Never stick any thing inside the disk slot.You may think its a good idea to use a Qtip to clean around inside there but trust me you will end up doing more harm than good. useing a damp NOT WET Qtip or cloth ect on the out side of the disk slot to clean dust build up from the foam is fine though.
6. Always try to take a 30+ minute break after two or so hours of gameplay or movie playback, power down the system. not only is this good for your eyes ect but it allows the system to cool down.
7. Clean discs before putting them in the Ps3 to give your ps3's disc drive less stress. (There have been quite a few disc drive failures reported)
8. Try not to smoke around your ps3 or really any electronic device. The big reason why it counts for ps3s is because of the ps3s lense and laser that reads the discs
9. Laying your PS3 flat instead of standing it tall is supposed to be a better idea for laser life and prevention of disc scratches.
10. Try to buy HDD games. Games that play with the hard drive instead of the disc drive put's less stress on your ps3 more specifically the disc drive
The following will explain how to make your ps3 run faster and smoother
1. Restore your ps3's file system and rebuild database. How to below.
Turn off PS3 so the red light is on.
Hold and keep holding the power button. The console will turn on, and eventually turn off again.
Once off, with the red light on again, press and hold the power button. You will hear one beep, another single beep after that, and then two beeps in a row. After the two beeps, let go of the power button so it doesn't turn off again and you'll end up in the system recovery menu. From here there are a few options. Now this is important, DO NOT CLICK ON 'RESTORE PS3'. That will wipe the HDD clean. You don't want that. :O
What you want is the other two options, 'restore ps3 database', takes about 5 minutes, and 'restore ps3 file system' (your bootup code, restoring is almost instant).
These two options will not delete any content on your HDD, but it will nuke any music playlists you have, and if you edited track information on any mp3s, say you renamed them all to something less ambigous than "track 01", the names and other altered data will revert.
Do this and you'll notice a significant improvement on your performance in proportion to how much you use the machine. Keep in mind that any hard drive intensive game like DCUO, Socom Confrontation, PSN downloads, etc will make a mess of your hard drive over time, so restoring the database at least will tidy it up and reorganize files to faster access. If you have a 300gb hard drive and your drive is almost maxed out you're probably going to want to do this twice a month.
2. Delete messages recieved and sent (This will help PSN run smoother)
If you guys would like me to add anything else just post below. I will update this thread when I find more information.
The reason why I made this thread is because a lot of people are getting a lot of problems when really a lot of the problems are contributed to people not taking proper care of your Ps3. I've had my ps3 for 4 years now and have had very few problems. |

It helps your internet by making pretty much a phonebook of domains so it's easier for your device to find it which speeds up connection speeds. I hear Googles is very good. |

I think one thing people forget is to love your PS3. I often bathe and sleep nude with mine because I have a severe personality disorder that prevents me from forming relationships and developing bonds with human beings.

i would like to add that putting your ps3 flat aint good. the standing position helps the air distribute better.
put your ps3 flat play for half an hour and then put your hand on the bottom, its red hot..!
stand it up do the same and notice the difference, its due to gpu cpu positioning,
also a spinning disc and the skirt on the disc drawer blows air out rather than in.
iv never had anything brake because of smoking
I had my fat ps3 on life support for 2 years, it contained no upper outer case, my disc drive had a piece of wood under to buffer the heat from the sinc as it was causing the sensor to rev the fan to max,
it finaly decided to die when cod mw3 got played,
gpu went puff 
good write up though, most is correct

OP great post, I would like to add to it.
I bath with my ps3 so the water gets to the hard to reach places. now you can't plug in the ps3 after because of it being wet so i tumble dry it after. now, sometimes it won't work because of the deep clean so i repeat the second stage and everything is fine. |

I have used it for a while and don't get PSN disconnects as often as I use too. |

I don't normally get them ever, unless its something that is booting off people in massive droves like denial of service attack or something.

Smoking hurts all electronics over time.
I've heard people claim that laying it down is better and others saying putting it up vertical is better so I decided to leave that out.
Also it is known that fat ps3s have ventilation problems. The slims are very good with not overheating lol. |

Not true. It is permenant fix but you will need to know exactly how to do everything right when applying the paste. My 6 year PS3 is still going strong... never overheats, never even loud fan, and is only slightly warm to touch. Of course you need to keep it dust free. |

There is always a chance for the thermal paste to dry out. Also this is not something most people would do. |
