There is a great need to change how instant battle matches are played as currently many new players and veterans are dissatisfied with how the system currently works. So here is my suggestion on how it should operate.
Add categories of play based on total gear meta level (see *1 below): All tiers will reward the same amount of ISK Higher tiers will reward more SP Tier 1 - Low meta allowance biased towards militia and standard gear. High net ISK gain, low sp gain.
Tier 2 - Medium meta allowance biased towards advanced gear. Fair net ISK gain, fair sp gain (*2).
Tier 3 - Unlimited meta allowance. Poor net ISK gain, great sp gain (*2).
[/list]
If you entered a Tier 1 match, all fittings that exceed Tier 1's meta allowance would be greyed out and unusable.
What this system would create is an upward progression for new players as their skills improve and they want to earn more SP faster. However, while Tier 3 would maximize SP gain, it would be financially unsustainable (*2) so players would eventually have to drop to a lower tier to accumulate enough ISK to reenter Tier 3. This would create a mix of new and veteran players in the lower tiers though both would have similar gear capabilities which means new players could see how Dust should be played from the start and veteran players arenGÇÖt absolutely demolishing new players.
*1: Originally, I believed a gear tier system would be better, but on further reflection I realized that someone running a proto gun but the rest militia (a glass canon build if you will) would be forced to play against people who have full proto. Using meta allows players to sacrifice gear capabilities in one area to maximize it in others.
*2: This is assuming you are running at the max meta allowance and have high (for that tier) gear costs. If you can run militia and do well or full proto without dying, you get the best of both worlds (high net ISK and great sp gain).

Updated OP to explain why I believe a meta system would work better than other commonly proposed systems.
@Ignatius Crumwald
Our ideas are very similar to each other but I disagree with two areas
I don't think skills that affect performance should affect the meta. That would make it more difficult and less enjoyable for veteran players to play in lower tiered matches which would hurt the overall system. Yes, they have a slight advantage over newer players, but that is part of the rpg element of this game.
I also don't think the 1 equipment in each slot type would be a good standard for all roles at the moment. The main problem I feel comes with the logis. As part of their role, logis need a lot of equipment. Using that standard could force logis to move up a tier just for their basic level of play. I believe it would be better to make a standard that assumes all slots are filled. Not only would this prevent any role from being denied, but I find it is more enjoyable to push your suit to it's limit. Why should I play with my fits to see what I can fit in with cpu/pg limits if it's going to bump me up with people who are using adv or proto suits? This may require the difference between the meta of different levels of equipment to be increased though. |
