Once again, as a game designer I will put out an idea for CCP to ignore. This time it's about a viable game change to provide a challenge to veteran players, while keeping new blue dots in the game.
In the Merc battles tab, how about we allow people to play as mercs, and give them some information that would greatly influence where people play.
What I propose is this:
Provide the initial value of a battle's contract in the battle description, and provide 3 tiers of contract.
ie. Battle 1 has a contract value of 1,000,000 ISK. This would be the initial value of the battle, that increases according to equipment used like it does now.
Battle 2 has an initial value of 2,000,000 ISK
Battle 3 has an initial value of 3,000,000 ISK
Having the value of the battle posted, provides players with the knowledge that there is enough money there to justify using their proto gear, and the increased reward would attract tougher players.
This would reflect the reality of contracts bearing more importance to an employer, while encouraging higher end players to play for the bigger rewards. This would also add to meaningful advancement for a new player to feel comfortable taking on the big boys.
TL;DR: Provide different levels of Merc contracts to attract higher end players with larger rewards, while making those rewards known to the players.

As a bandaid before proper matchmaking and/or proper competitive content: Yes
Beyond that point there's no reason to add gamemodes that pay out better for no good reason (other than to provide matchmaking capabilties) as the game is not designed to make proto sustainable at any point. The cost is specifically designed to prohibit the use of protogear unless there's more at stake than the generic ISK payout i.E. you can't afford to lose.
Again, this could work to fix the matchmaking issues for the time beeing but i don't believe it's very combatible with the game's concept.
Edit: It would be cool to add a level of randomness into the payouts to simulate EVE to dust contracts. At that point i would drop my above objections because it merely mimics an already planned gameplay mechanic at this point. |

[quote=Malkai InosIi don't believe it's very combatible with the game's concept.[/quote] ?!? It IS THE GAME CONCEPT
you are a merc choosing a merc battle fighting for the higest bidder.
I agree that having only 3 choices is kind of boring..
But seeing different NPC corps and a broad range of isk vallue they are willing to provide for the battle.. then you make you choice. that is WHAT IT IS SUPPOSED TO BE to be a game that make you a MERCENARY |

I just wanted to stress that having 3 generic payout tiers feels a little too arbitrary and that this feature would have to communicate a reason for the bigger payout like beeing associated with a weatlthy corp or fighting over an important objective. |

Just improve matchmaking based on player sp level. At least for Instant battles . Obviously Corp battles and PC battles would remain survival of the fittest. |

The payout tiers are just a random example. I would assume there would be some range of opportunities that present themselves.
I am against separating players by sp, as it would arbitrarily decrease the pool of potential opponents. I would rather provide the opportunity for people who want the challenge to have the option.
The second part that would need to happen is something to spend the isk on that is a status symbol of sorts on and off the battlefield. Again, to provide an incentive to take on the tougher contracts. |

I think a meta level option would work best. Meta level 0-5 or close to it should be the first level and any suit higher should show red for the battle saying too much meta. Next teir should be maybe double? So 0-10 0-15 Keep going to proto. Any ideas? |

I don't think the meta separation is going to fly. Many people have suggested this to CCP, and they don't seem to entertain the idea. I can see why, since it's too easy for a player to sit in low meta games and never advance to the higher meta games. And if you attach different rewards to create an incentive, then you're back where we started in the OP.
I realize CCP has tried to do this with FW and PC. However it is widely accepted that PC is not feasible, and doesn't keep players satisfied when looking for a challenge. It's more like work than playing a game. FW on the other hand has no communication to players about what the difference is - Which I honestly don't believe there is any.
Having clearly defined contracts - with an initial value and the promise of different salvage, better salvage at higher tier games, creates a desire in players to get better and balls up to the challenge. This is very much in line with Eve's Nullsec, Highsec etc... Risk and reward mentality. ie. Give specific rewards for kill-streaks and K/D ratio as well, like colour variant weapons or limited edition LAV's. When people see them in the game then, they know that player has accomplished something. |
