(Clarification: Client Lag means low frame rate, jerky movement, it breaks ability to aim and makes the game slideshow)
The client lag causing law frame rates IS an issue, and it really is a threat to this game. Playing in low or jerky framerate takes away the feel that you are in control of your actions. Because of that, winning or losing matches doesn't matter: it's no fun, leaves bad taste into mouth either way. THAT is not good for the game.
In many cases the player count is the reason behind multiple cases of client lag. If not directly, it could be a backgound reason: - Many players mean more vehicles on field - Many players mean more people needing to be on same comms ( https://forums.dust514.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=914072#post914072 ) - Many players mean more character models to be rendered - Many players mean more special effects going around + Many players also contribute to server lag as info needs to travel in a spiderweb fashion
[REQUEST:] Radical suggestion: REDUCE player count(!)
8 vs 8 For PC and FW. 12 vs 12 for pubs. As long as it needs to. If PS3/Dust can't handle more people, leave it like that. Forever. Rough, I know. But if the game is broken elsehow, then that's the way.
The reasons really don't matter whether it's bad coding or PS3 has reached it's limits. What matters is if Dust is a game which can be played in the first place, instead of many people being in a match which is slide show for everyone which can't be called a game at all. It may be different what Devs visioned, but sometimes visions and realities don't meet up.
PS: Note that I'm SO hoping it wouldn't have to go this way - I'm a fan of Dust and dreaming of HUGE battlefields. I'm a one year vet who've tried to help make dream game true. But hope rarely changes anything. Provocative? Maybe. But there is a point. |

As I said straight from the beginning, I'm NOT talking about server lag.
I'm talking about client lag which is your PS3 and software. Internet connection or server capacity have nothing to do with it. |

Game needs to be as smooth as unreal tournament. There's no real excuse to not be as it's unreal engine.
12 v 12 would be too small though. 16 on 16 is too small. |

The problem is the PS3. Let's just wait and see how the PS4 looks and wait for CCP's official comments on what they will do with DUST once the PS3 is replaced. If they plan on launching the PS4 version of DUST within ~1 year of PS4 launch then I'm willing to take the numbers down while we wait for better hardware.
I'm hoping for a PC release within 5 years from now. |

Why would I pay for it.. CCP pays for it ..after they fix the balance of the game people might start seeing this as a good reason to spend their hard earned cash on it again..
Then they buy a couple servers.. renting servers is hella cheap too.. considering the kind of $ they are getting for this mediocre softcore nerf-fest |

Would be a shame to have reduced player count in games when 16 v 16 already feels small, however, im game for anything that improves this mess
But im thinking maybe we could just have the graphics dumbed down to get the same result?
I was thinking last build how bland everything looked, and the 1st thing i noticed was how much nicer uprising looked, but for me its not worth it at the cost of core gameplay being messed up
Has anyone noticed the patches of grass move!? .. i really dont think they need to, you cant even tell unless your stareing at it
Also, i know the games called "dust" but do we really need all the dust particles in the air? surely removing it would help at least a little, it doesnt add to the atmosphere, and if anything is a hindrance when useing turrents or aiming long distance
Also, while still horrid, acadamy doesnt feels half as bad, maybe because theres next to no vehicals in there?
And last but not least.... everytime dust makes me hard reset my ps3, if i then go into the recovery menu, it will tell me the file system is corrupt and needs rebuilding, EVERY single time without fail, this is on a less than one year old slim ps3, after rebuilding, its still feels offkey, but not as bad as before, I think this needs some looking into
Oh and also, (im not sure how to word this) twice over the past week, i have had like umm weird artifacts on screen, like the models of the building and the letter capture houseing have turned into big spikey unrecognisable objects, i couldnt even see the way into the capture point, it looks like when you play on pc with bad gpu or drivers, how the hell does that happen on ps3? lol |

I'm personally not having client lag problems, but that might just be because of how I play.
Dust could handle larger battles than it already does now- if the playerbase was different. The player count by itself isn't a big factor. It's that 3/4 of the players in every battle is in one clump all firing fully automatic weapons.
That is where the frame rate issues come in. |
