I don't know if this answers your qestion entirely, but I like the shows that don't try and explain to you through the translation WHY one character is saying what they are saying. At the same time, shows like Squid Girl can't easily make the same sort of jokes through a translation as they can by using an english dub. I hate shows that act like you are ******** and think you can't listen between the lines so to speak or remember what they just said 5 minutes ago. No need to repeat the same dialog or narrate all your actions. I also hate shows where they have a 30 second fight scene then spend 5 minutes talking. So you just exclusively watch AMVs? I jest... So, you liked Kill La Kill but don't like Sword Art Online? (For example?) Kill La Kill was funny SAO was not. SAO VITA is hilarious, lol :D

SAO II is such a ******* disappointment omg
It started out and looked really awesome, but it's been another 6 episodes and literally all they've done is talk about the same **** each episode. *Puts down his VITA where he just finishes taking Asuna out around town after clearing floor 81, the first casualty on the assault team was taken as a player tried to switch to save her friend, and took a special in the face for it, followed by a minions special. RIP Suzuka*
Anime is bad, but at least it's pretty.

I have just started up this show: http://www.animehere.com/anime/bokura-ga-ita.html
It's a heavy romance/drama, 4 episodes in, and so far, i'm adoring it.
You can see all the old school production qualities like re-used scenes, quicker replies to save time, and backgrounds half drawn, but it all comes together so well to give you a unique atmosphere.
The art itself seems manga-ish, so characters poses and facial reactions are superb. |

Freaking Mao from the Devil is a Part Timer is on there I wish those supports had replaced some of their choices for actual playable characters. I would have loved to have used Mao or Holo the Wise Wolf (Spice & Wolf assist) or Celty over generic shounen protagonist #1-3. Dude from Durarara, Basketball loli, Taiga, and the chick from Railgun are all good picks in my book though. You will fear my Oreimo Tsun powers.

So, after tons of request, I tried Fairy Tail again, but this time skipping the first few episodes of fluff. The way Fairy Tale introduces the series is done poorly for me, it doesn't interest mature viewers at all, completely aiming at the pre-teen demographics, which is how most anime are.
And most anime continue to be that way, but FT takes this tried and true method of anime story telling and adds depths, many depths, and it's found in every character, even side characters.
By the first season alone you'll of gotten to know everyone through trial and error before you get to know them through there history, and this builds familiarity between characters and viewer - We got to know who they are, then find out why. Sometimes we don't even know there's anything to find out, you'll of felt like you got to know a character already, then bam, you find a new side of them.
It's as if the writer wrote the story from the moment they were born and continued to write until we're at where we are now. All the complexity of a lasting relationship and the budding/losing of interest and common themes with others, it's just great to behold.
Where Naruto and One Piece rely on intense action and drama to drive literally everything, Fairy Tail has other tricks up it sleeves to entertain a wider variety of audiences then other mainstream anime have accomplished.
I am only 1 season in, and this is my opinion thus far. I'll let you guys know if anything changes. :3
Summary: FT has a rocky start, coming off as a naruto clone feeding off of peoples need for flashy colors that collide but the show quickly catches pace 5 episodes in and begins unfolding the characters rather then story - ultimately making an action/drama show have slice of life and romance qualities, creating a unique watching experience.
So far - the show is 8/10 for me, if they put anymore focus on Romance that is there and is developing between the characters it'll be bumped up in score. |

Foundation Seldon wrote:*Fairy Tail Spoilers Fairy Tail Spoilers* *Fairy Tail Spoilers Fairy Tail Spoilers* *Fairy Tail Spoilers Fairy Tail Spoilers*
See I actually think that Fairy Tail's opening arcs are probably its strongest and that sometime after they met the Metal Dragonslayer (in fact immediately after) the quality of the manga went downhill. How many times did they "power of friendship" their way through the battle with the death dragon thing on that random island? How many times were they beaten down senselessly only to get back up with willpower in a single battle? I think at that point I was seriously considering dropping but I was interested to see where the author was going to take the story after the time skip.
And then instead of dealing with the consequences of Fairy Tail being totally outclassed by new guilds they instead throw a DBZ Plot Guru in our way and "unlock the potential" of our heroes and heroines. I noped my way out the door and never looked back. You cannot watch a show like Fairy Tail and not expect 'unlocked' powers. And I can tell it isn't really a problem for you, since you enjoyed the Iron Dragon, pinky gets powered up by red head before he engaged that 'revealed his hidden potential' revealing a fire dragon surrounding him. If the enemies get tougher, the good guys need to get tougher too.
And it's the ark right after Iron Dragon I fell for - Leo's short story was very enjoyable, watching him open up and Lucy share the companionship the other instilled in her from the Iron Dragon ark was wonderful. The story itself, if that's your focus, is completely cliche. I have seen these stories before a million times already, even the island village. *Black Star Naru anyone?*
But let's be real - anime stories completely rely on characters rather then plot to build interest and move a story along. And Fairy Tails characters all shine. I can't name any that annoy. And I felt true emotion for so many of the characters in the Dragon Iron Ark I was surprised. Everyone from the card girl to the guy with the smokes - all of them opened up and cried there own tears for there own reasons loving those around them in there own way that doesn't feel like it's there to fit a cliche personality. |

I don't accept that we should compromise between having enjoyable characters or having a plot that actually attempts to make sense. Especially when there are so many examples of shows/manga that know how to handle both ends of the spectrum without crippling themselves in the process. It's not that there's a compromise, more so then this is how these industries have chosen to appeal to there audiences.
Hollywood just can't sell a character like anime can, and so anime puts more focus on that character, giving us what we want. Often times this is what leads to directors ultimately changing the plot away from the original manga.
Anime simply don't do plots well, if you want a strong plot, read the manga, anime corrupts it to appeal to it's target audience. |

Now I'm reading the manga and I'm looking forward to the Kancolle anime. I worried for the story though since my military anime experience has been controversial. And by that I mean I love them all, but some of their story elements have made it possible for IKEA to start a table store chain on the moon. I couldn't finish it, it was like a bad mix of Ordinary Life and Survival Game Club, rather then entertaining it came off as awkward.
I'll probably give it another shot, though. Fairy Tail has shown me sometimes you just don't watch shows in the right mood to make them take off for you.
Bridge to the Stary Skys? Oh, yes, i remember. That show is loaded with amazingly cute girls, but with so few episodes it doesn't ever really take off. Still a good watch.
I'm only on episode 126 on Fairy Tail - what an epic show >_> |

The time-line are a bit jumbled - you'll see arks from time lines earlier then what are seen from Index's arks. But Index came out first - and Railgun came out as a spin off. It was the shows success that lead to season 2 having a serious plot that semi-involved Index's plot to give people a reason to watch it on equal grounds as Index rather then a knock-off.
In my opinion, Railgun and Index are both fantastic watches, both equal in measure. But Index has the advantage of being taken seriously from the beginning. |

In my opinion, Railgun and Index are both fantastic watches, both equal in measure. But Index has the advantage of being taken seriously from the beginning. I only got through the first arc of Index before I dropped it but I came away pretty unsatisfied with the experience. *Index Arc 1 Spoilers* *Index Arc 1 Spoilers* *Index Arc 1 Spoilers* *Index Arc 1 Spoilers* *Index Arc 1 Spoilers* I mean I guess I can see there being a divide with the magical and "scientific" areas of the world but with how advanced seemingly society as a whole is I have a hard time believing these guys wouldn't be able to access any outside information about the way memory works. Especially since Index's "friends" chased her into a scientific hub of society. A part of me was really willing to accept the contrivance of "too much memory = death" as a reason for needing to wipe it even if that's not the way memory works too. But when the show itself is basically like "No, what? That's ******* stupid" it just totally discredits the competence of Index's frienemies. And seriously what the hell was with that justification for what they were doing, clearly they've been able to catch and restrain Index multiple times in the past so why exactly couldn't they show up a day after a wipe and just explain everything to her afterwards? But from what I've heard the opening arc is probably the series' worst and there's a notable dip in quality compared to the show's other arcs. They go to lengths to explain this - but even then, I can't relate to it as you couldn't. Supposibly, when her memory wipes she completely forgets them, and when they tried keeping dairies for her and such, it wouldn't work, as it would have to chronicle a year worth of missing memories for her. It's too much for her to take in, and she rejects trying.
But her friends being the overly caring people they are, stick with it. The Church deceives them saying they cast a special spell on her that works a special way, and put them under orders to safe guard there precious friend.
It's more of a sick joke against the friends that the british government sets up. I never thought low of the friends, more then every single organization that seems to exist in this show is inherently evil, even ones filled with all the good guys, lol. |

I can't wait to check these shows out myself! There's a number of beautiful, nay, gorgeous shows this season. Anime quality has been skyrocketing each year, and it's become half the fun of each new season to see which shows blow you rmind with visuals.
And to think - 3 years ago japan was in a 'crisis of story telling' Apperently, they were in a draught of story telling, but you wouldn't be able to tell from the fantastic plots this years batch of shows have had.
They even take uninteresting concepts and make them beautiful to behold. No Game No Life isn't exactly new or refreshing, but DAMN. And the Drama and Romances? They've been competeting with Toradora in both quality in plots, animation, and characters.
Every year is a good year to be an anime fan. |
