Terra Formars GÖÑ that manga and Arachnid are some of my favorites. There is so much bad-science it's just amazing.
bad science in anime is my guilty pleasure.

I am a sucker for mecha animes. Probably watching Robotek in the early 90's before I knew of the distinction between animation styles, and gundam wing in the late 90's
This season has a few. Not much originality there. I'm watching them compulsively. Shirogane no Ishi: Argevollen has some deus ex crap to keep the shinji-guy as the main character. If it wasn't for the shinji it's be a pretty cool show. But nope, have to have the annoying welp in there because, anime.
Aldnoah.Zero on the other hand was a slow start but it got me hooked. MC has a detached attitude and he's got an counter-point that's emotionally drive. i'm getting a earth fed/zeon vibe from those two. probably more like Hiiro/Zekusu thing going on there.
Anyone else watching A.Z? thoughts on that?

lol, i've mentioned it elsewhere, back in 10-11 school year I was my college's anime club president. lol we had membership fees of $5/semester. took about half the membership fees and spent it on booze for myself.

If someone posts there stats I'll post mine. It would be embarrassing being the only one. The amount is pretty big, but even worse when you realize 97% of it occurred over the last 3 years. MyAnimeList is so last year, time to upgrade to Anime Planet. http://www.anime-planet.com/users/Gakorak
Ugh. Why did I do this?
I made an account there. I'm looking at all the anime I watched. I've apparently wasted a month of my life watching anime. . . and I'm only on page 15.

Still looking over the list of anime and adding it to my profile. Just got to Lupin. LOL I loved watching Lupin: Green vs Red because we brought the DVD over to a friend's apartment to watch.
This is funny because he is red/green color blind

You've watched less than a month of anime. For shame. by which I mean my shame: http://www.anime-planet.com/users/PhantomQueen/signature
I know I'm missing some from that list. There were a lot of shows I've watched that I've just forgotten the names of.

So, question to you anime lovers, which do you prefer: Cultural Equivalent or Direct Translation?
One example of cultural equivalent is translating names into English format of given name followed by family name. Another example would be replacing a pun, which is done through homonyms in the original language with a completely different joke in English.
A lot of times characters will use loan words from English, yet when it gets translated those words don't appear at all.

Here is my taste.
I loved the DevilMan movies. I loved the Vampire Hunter D movies. The original and the reboot. I loved the original Ninja Scroll movie. I loved Ghost in the Shell, just the movie, the series was terrible. I loved Soul Eater. I liked Desert Punk. I liked Fist of the North Star.
I've tried watching lots of anime and most of it comes off as non-cohesive garbage, with terrible writing, that I assume is targeted towards people with attention deficit disorders.
So....Netflix, anime. Help.
I am so very, very tempted to recommend bad shows because of how that came across.
I have no clue what's actually on netflix though. First thought was "Slayers" though. lol.

the "lol" was because Slayers is an excellent example of a show for people with ADD. also a bit sad it isn't up anymore, watched the majority of the series on netfix (it's a classic)
If Saiyuki is on Netflix watch it. It's one of the best Journey to the West animes ever. SAO is amazing. 4 story arcs, spoiler alert: each arc is worse than the previous.
Haven't updated this since August, a few days after I created the account, but http://www.anime-planet.com/users/PhantomQueen/anime/watched?sort=rating&order=desc check for the shows with 5 stars
Voices of a Distant Star is by far my number 1 favorite. Total tear-jerker.
Ignore my love for Hunter X Hunter. The 2011 series, that is on netflix goes by too fast for someone that didn't see the 1999 version or read the manga
Baccano is the only anime that I've ever purchased with real money.

I-Shayz-I wrote:Just stop paying for netflix and get a subscription to crunchyroll.
Want to try it out for free for a month? Go to crunchyroll.com/sfnerd It's even an app for PS3/4 if that's what you watch on. I then recommend going to the "simulcasts" section or "popular" to see what other people are watching.
If you binge, you can probably finish at least a dozen shows before the month is over. Check through a few pages back in this thread to see some older lists if you need to.
Or don't be a scrub and drop subscription based services all together. There are dozens of dozens of sites online that have pretty good quality streaming

Not a big fan of studio ghibli, i find the stories too much of a middle ground trying to cater to everyone. on the other hand, showing people miazaki films is a good way to get them into anime. It just sucks that Disney owns the rights to them in the US.

Anyone else like really dry anime? Like the .Hack//Sign or Wolfsrain or a lot of GitS where there is sometimes combat/action/whatnot but the majority of the show is dialogue.
Certainly there are a lot of those, but the only ones I can think of right now fall into the "School life" category, and I don't really want that.
Sadly, I've probably seen it if it was released in 1988-2007, 2012-2014, but I'd appreciate any suggestions on series that meet are like what I'd trying to describe

Lain was good. Watched it on VHS the first time. Second time was on DVD only, because it was made for interlace TVs it looked really ****** up on my PC.
Witch Hunter Robin holds a special place in my heart, I twas on of the first 2 fansubs I ever watched. It was a major influence on sending me my way into my "omg, anime is awesome. it sucks that it's always bowdlerized, but it's awesome I can have it in original format!"
Akuma no hana is something that caught my interest but I never checked out. . . honestly, I have no clue what half of you are talking about because you use translated names because when I put it back to native titles they aren't the same *cough* looking at you when supernatural battles become common place *cough*

Up until that part in the show there had been relatively no "fanservice" at all. I brought a girl over one night and saw that a new episode of AgK was available so I put that on for us to watch. She starts laughing as the episode goes from serious to boobs in a matter of seconds. I then play two more shows that also turn into boobs and later that night she makes a post on facebook about how I watch too much hentai XD I have the worst luck when it comes to timing I guess lol.
That's what you get for watching hentai

I'm a Chicago native. We have anime-central (ACEN) each year and on sunday they have a hentai exhibition. One of my favorites was the year they played "Gold Throbber."
I mean, the title alone is hilarious. My friends and I were laughing so hard at it.
Hentai is hilarious. ****, in general, is hilarious. Watching either of those in a group and poking fun at it is always good fun.
