I am unsure if some players with strange names would make it in the history and chronicles of EVE as I haven't seen any except for regular news and blogs on AWOXing (strange names acceptable for the likes of griefing!) For example, Tony Gonzales the writer (he wrote Templar One and The Empyrean Age) wouldn't be inspired to add Xx-Buttsniffer-xX or ILoveMILF to his stories. Some players will be stuck with these names for life. Yes, even few EVE Online players have unusual names. The same goes for Corps. See the last section here. Then again, it's just a game and nobody cares.
But would you care when it comes to being recognized in a famed novel and merchandises one day?

I have the same opinions as you do and have chosen my name to be something that makes a bit of sense in the universe. Also for corporations, back in beta when I was messing around with them I'd always name them something that sounds like a real corporation name.
But then again, I've always been interested in lore and role playing in pretty much every game I've ever had. |

If he did they might actually be entertaining.
I think TonyG lucked out with CCP.
A barely adequate writer guaranteed sales by a fan base.
I read Templar One. It was intresting, in the same way reading evelopedia is intresting. But it read like fan fiction in both quality and depth. It wasn't worth the money I paid for it.
CCP Abrasomething is a far better writer. His mind is wonderfully imaginative and a little twisted and man can he write.
Id wager tony is hooked on that whole new yourk write scene vibe. I bet he sits in starbuck with his macbook pro out. Chuck Palanuik he ain't. |

I agree that some peoples names are pretty ridiculous, but I don't really agree with your overall statement.
I think that even if Adolf ******'s name was "Adolf Poopypants" We would still be learning about him in school. You might argue that it would have been impossible for him to rise to power with that name and that may be true. Then I would say, even if Ted Kaczynski (the unibomber) was named "Buttsqueeze Mcgee" he would still be the unibomber, and still be in the history books.

All that matters about character name is its intrinsic value. EVE sandbox has the good ones reserved over 10 years ago: LOL, DIE, PILOT etc. Those are worth trillions in isk.
I picked what was left - a mediocre "funny" name. |

Well, yet another short-sight by CCP, assuming they love lore so much.
Name selection on character creation screen with a sizable chunk of surnames to choose from and a given name generator with some pretty tight parameters would do the trick. |
