Apologies if this has been suggested previously, I couldn't find anything with search.
I believe there is great potential to utilize the inertial dampener beyond a descent system.
As of now it does its job perfectly. However, if skills/modules for the dampener were introduced to give different attributes upon activation/landing, it would add a new level to game-play.
Some ideas I have: Shield Recharge/Armor Repair - Restores a certain amount shield/armor to allies within (X) metres of impact site. Resupply - As above but with ammo resupply. EMP/Explosion - Upon hitting the ground, releases a contained EMP/Explosion to damage enemy units. Shockwave - Releases a non-lethal pulse that knocks back/stuns enemies for a short period (e.g 0.5-1 sec longer than landing recovery time) Scan - Upon activation (not impact) scans the ground below for enemies.
As with weapons and other modules, the bonuses would increase with meta/skill level. Only one module could be active on a fitting (maybe introduce its own slot) to prevent over-powering. Limited "gliding" would be required during freefall to allow some sort of aiming for activation.
Not only would the game be more interesting, I believe it would encourage more dropship play. With the ability to attack from above, mercs can more easily fight back against entrenched enemies at an objective, creating a need for ships. Perhaps giving the pilot WP for any the mercs earn on impact.

Some interesting ideas. Can't think of any other uses as of now. But could be fun to see something like this implemented down the line. |

WEEEEEE!! (explosion) Sounds like an amazing idea. I've seen maybe five dropships in fifteen hours. Two of them were mine. Which I crashed because I can't fly. |

How about orbital support? If squad lead and you have an OB ready, could press a button while falling to call it in on your position. Even though it would be suicide for the user, be an excellent way to clear the lines for your team. Plus it would be easier to targetwhere you want it, as I have seen many a strike go to waste due to having to guess where the enemy is. |

I'm not sure about how the healing/resupply versions could be explained in background. It would be interesting but doesn't fit well. If anyone has an explanation for it please post it. Other idea sounded good.
Another mod/skill could be allowing steering while falling somewhat. I would assume if the dampening was done off-center it would cause a fall at an angle. This would allow choosing the impact point after jumping off a building or from the mcc.
Also, a mod or skill to allow using the dampener before a vehicle impact would be a nice counter to the death taxi. Type of damage caused by a fall and being hit by vehicle are similar, so hitting the dampener just before impact should prevent damage from murder taxi. Maybe have it lower damage by a percentage, since the dragging would cause damage as well as the impact. So people that skill into it and time dampner right could be pushed several seconds before death, this would allow for things like jumping unto hood or firing at driver from the bumper in those few seconds.. Being crushed between a object and vehicle should not be affected, crushing doesn't rely on inertia. |
