You go to knife a guy from behind. He randomly for no ****ing reason whatsoever decides to move slightly to the left, or a tiny bit to the right, or maybe he gets a wild hair up his ass and moves backwards. If he moves ANY direction at all that doesn't leave his back pointing directly at you - HE WILL KNOW YOU ARE THERE AND MOVE AWAY. This happens ALL. THE. TIME. You wouldn't know this unless you knife. So now, you are stuck trying to turn around and chase him as you have a melee weapon and he has a gun, ammo, and plenty of space between the two of you. It doesn't help that the turning is so slow in this game even with you controls turned up.
But that's not the only problem. If an enemy is running away from you, with his back to you, and you are chasing him - you can't possibly charge your knife and hit him. Once you go to charge, you will start walking, and he will still be running. If you go to jump and close the distance (yes, you can JUMP and charge your knife, but apparently thousands of years from now you can't click a button to charge your knife while RUNNING), you will likely over jump and land in front of him, because scouts jump faster than other players can run - so then he'll know you are there and back up... and fire... as you are turning around... again...
So since you can't charge and hit him, what do you do? Stab wildly in a maniacal attempt to hit him. I have the proto knives, and can tell you - this doesn't work well. Since the Nova knife isn't charged it does barely any damage. So what happens as you swing repeatedly trying to stab them? Well, for one, you start walking again. Meaning you have to close the distance AGAIN. As you are both running and you are swinging away, you will notice how easy it is to miss with the knife. The amount of time and hits it takes to kill someone as they run away from you with an uncharged nova knife is absurd. It's so likely one of his buddies will see you and take you out.
Having a nice knife takes up a lot of CPU. If you have the proto knife you are basically always going to main it, so clearly the developers thought maining a knife was feasible. With the way it is now, it requires too much luck on how the enemy will just so happen decide to move. Knifers shouldn't be cornered into one way death simply because enemies randomly decided to jiggle slightly.
How do we fix this?
There are multiple ways to fix this. Not all need to be utilized, these are just ideas that I feel would help.
1) Ability to charge the knife as you run. (This is at the top of the list because it is my preferred pick. This is the only way to fix this issue without breaking something else) 2) Make Kinetic Catalyzers increase the move speed as well as the sprint speed. 3) Make scouts move a bit faster so it won't be so hard closing distance
I doubt making knives more viable to use will ruin the game, and I also doubt many players will switch to knives. As it stands right now, Knives are just an nonviable, SP sink that you don't realize was a waste until after you've spent so much time earning them. If you all truly want Dust to succeed, you will welcome the possibility of another fun yet challenging playstyle. Thank you. |

Proto Minmatar Scout with Proto Knives and double speed mods is pretty freaking awesome.
One tip. If you don't get the kill the first time, move on. You can often just switch targets when you miss and are discovered, get a kill, and make a getaway before your shields are popped. In fact, if you switch targets and then switch back, you'll often catch the guy unprepared.
Only fools take a knife to a gun fight. So don't go looking for a fight. Go looking for a kill. |

I think you're exaggerating about the whole move-slight-to-the-left thing. The area in which your knives inflict damage has increased to about 60-90 degrees allowing at least one of your blades to make in impact. The real issue here is the hit detection. On multiple occasions I have struck targets dozens of times that should have dropped dead but the damage don't register. I feel that if the hit detection is fixed, then the knives will be more practical than they already are. |

I don't think he's exaggerating. Once I close to cqc range, if they move at all in an unpredictable way, I won't hit them. And then I have to strafe sprint around them if I want to survive long enough to try again. That's if I can find them, because usually I lose them at this point because there is no indication of their location on my screen so I have to guess based on the radar. Which doesn't work.
Knives need work if they will ever be more than a super fun gimmick. |

Can't back peddle then! Your a ninja it bugs me to with no charge an run but attack when they don't have a open space to run too, use the Velcro wall an stairs glitch to your advantage or attack a group with super high knife damage an make them box eachother in as they all panic, they will get each other killed by freezing each other, an when in doubt two granades an run! My best solution till charge an run |

I ran into a room full of the enemy, about 6 of them, and knifed one +50! and hopped about as they shot at me before jumping back out unscathed. If friendly fire were on, I wonder how many of them would have killed each other :)

You HAVE to run towards your enemy sometimes when they've discovered you. It's them or you. If you turn to run, you waste time turning, plus you're enemy has a longer range than you, so good luck getting away. There better be about 5 corners and no open spaces around, or you definitely will be getting shot.
Something tells me you made your mind up before reading any of the OP, to suit your own playstyle and keep other playstyles down. You didn't really address any of my points and just blurted out your own opinion. |

I'm fantastic actually, thanks for asking. = )
That said, there's some pretty stiff competition on here, in regards to 'knives only' games. Also, there's no cover. I don't imagine that ending well for the flock.
Aside from detection issues, KN are amazingly fun to use. Also, the 'spam' bug, where eventually they just stop working. =' (
If you guys do ever manage to get one of those games running effectively though, I'm there. Assuming you're not full. = ) |

Well if one so devious was to place remote explosives in a certain location then flank someone in a way that if your Nova Knives fail to do the trick, you would hopefully end up herding them backwards towards said RE whilst they are hip fireing pot shots at you. All of a sudden they're right where you want them you stop the persuit and stand still, the prey laughs while wondering what an idiot of a NK scout........... next second ka boooom.
Although its a nice thought the scout suit would most likey get mowed down before getting the intended target into the sweet spot. |

I'm not one to share tactics, but I will certain chime in on the issues I think would improve a nova knifing experience.Well, in the hopes to make it more immersive as well. Maken Tosch has a cool diary on here that goes into tactics as well as common issues.
See Here :D
One thing, I really like the knife work move you do when you first pull your knives out. That kind of thing is sweet, and I'd like to see different intimidating knife work flare. I love swiping my knives around when I am fighting another knifer as an intimidation measure
- IMHO, the most needed improvement is hands down a better FOV. As it is now, it is like we have blinders on. There is zero sense of peripheral vision, and it's quite like tunnel vision. It just plain needs to be widened. This improvement alone will improve the aspect of knife fighting. As it is now, it is all too easy to lose track of prey in close proximity resulting in a slash fest in hopes of landing a hit or three. A lot of times I will get a +50 but never actually see the kill on my screen. wut.
- Better cues as to having a charged hit ready to go. With IshNoks the charge up time is so quick who is to say if you are landing a swipe or a charged hit in the heat of a fight? I only know I am landing a charged hit when it's hitting stationary prey. Have a mild vibration humming in the controller when it is charged, change the color of the charge meter to a reddish hue, and play different sound/vibrations to reflect a swipe or a charged swing would all be welcome.
-Sprint Charge AND lunge Swipe. Maken Tosch and I disagree on including a sprint charge. I think in the name of plausibility alone it needs to be included. But mostly, it wouldn't make knives OP to have a sprint charge, it gimps them to not have it. It's tantamount to saying HMGs need a spin up time before their bullets start spraying. A sprint charge would work as you'd think. A lunge charge would be a matter of hitting jump and swipe at the same time in a direction. I think the distinction I am trying to make is a sprint charge is for frontal attacks, or even rear attacks on the run. Or to take out a back pedaler. A lunge charge is quick and does swipe type damage, but it allows you to commit to a forward swipe quickly. Or towards adjacent prey a la strafing. the idea with lunge swiping is to be able to chain attacks against multiple targets with some modicum of aim. It would also cost stamina per jumping.
- If everything else was implemented, then maybe this suggestion would be worthless. or excessive. But I was thinking it would be good to use the ADS button as a trigger to lock onto a target so you face them always but can move in all other manners. strafe, forward backward, jump, etc. You are just locked facing them front and center in your view. Then it would be a matter of juggling swipes/charged hits as you moved around the locked target.
- Perfect hit detection is needed as well. They know it is a problem, and they know it needs to get worked out. I suspect it is a symptom of a larger problem that affects all manner of game play. so we'll have to wait and see on this. It's just obviously coming at some point.
- Diffrent types of hits aside from charged and swiped. The addition of the swipe hit made me go back to knives. It made me go proto. It would be nice to have the ability to do low hits, hit weapons causing them to malfunction, head shots resulting in decapitation, stab moves, etc.
- Not just different racial variants, but also more melee weapons. amarr short swords, minmatar machetes, etc. also, some officer knives plz!
IF all of those made it into the game it would make the knife game so sweet. |

I use nova knives as my primary weapon, and I don't have a huge issue with this.
My main complaint is that hit detection is buggy when someone is running away. I hit someone 3 times, but the damage didn't actually register until the third hit. Luckily, #3 OHKed them. |

The reach on the knife is really pathetic, but at proto level the damage is massive, so there is a risk/reward - at proto level.
I think maybe the compromise is to drop the damage at the higher end and extend the reach/radius of the knife overall to make it more viable. |
