So I've been playing Dust for almost a year now,and with the "official release" that we all are playing now,it is clear to me that CCP really doesn't have very long to keep this game viable. Now before I get flamed, let me explain my position.
E3 is right around the corner, and without major improvements,or at least an announcement or two,I think that a lot of people, myself included, will look at the future of Dust to be bleak. We all know that Sony will be showcasing the PS4 heavily at E3,and I'm willing to bet that Dust won't have much room on the floor to wow anyone this year.
So looking at E3,I ask myself, what will be the big system seller for the PS4? Well, all I have to say is that if Destiny is one of those games that Sony decides to showcase heavily at E3,it's gonna be extremely hard for Dust to remain relevant after that.Just looking at some of the little footage that I've seen,it looks like it's going to be a huge seller, and there will probably be people leaving in droves to play it.Now this is all assuming that CCP still hasn't gotten their $h!7 together with this game by that time.
Along with Destiny, there are just way too many other games that are coming out for a lot of people to want to come back to Dust in the state that it's in,and what I mean by that isn't content or lack there of,but more of the technical side of things.People will put up with a laggy game with subpar controls for only so long before they finally move on to something that they enjoy more.Hell,it's already started to happen.don't see 8k+ people online at one time anymore.
CCP's carrot on the stick tactics of making a game is just wrong for consoles, and if they don't make some sweeping improvements, then it's going to be an epic disaster for them. Also,I will always be confused at how you are supposed to balance a game when you don't even have half of the content in it.So looking another year down the road, when we have all of the guns from all of the races, there will be more crying from the players that are left of how the Minmitar AR needs a buff,or how the Caldari SMG is OP.You create more work for yourselves when you try to balance like this.
I have to admit, while I LOVE the concept of Dust,I'm finding the game to be losing a lot of it's luster.I know that it might sound like I'm ranting, but I'm not.I'm actually sadden by the stark realization that this game may never live up to the vision that was presented to us.Maybe the problem is that Dust is a game that's too ahead of it's time,or maybe it's just that the CCP bit off more than they could chew, either way,I still stand firm in my belief that the clock is ticking for them.Let's just hope for gaming's sake that they get it right before they run out of time.
TL;DR CCP is running out of time to fix Dust before people leave to play other games.

Just for the record,I honestly do hope that Dust is a viable game in the very near future, and if it is,I WON'T abandon it for Destiny. The thing is though, the console market is mostly made up of people with ADHD,and don't have the patience to wait.On the other hand though, how long are people really supposed to wait if there is something more fun(notice that I said fun,and not necessarily better) to play?Right now on a scale of one to ten,Dust is about a 5.5 or 6 in it's fun factor. This is THE most important thing that needs to improve for Dust to survive.
If games aren't fun to play, people won't play them, plain and simple.I want Dust to succeed.I want Dust to usher in a new paradigm shift in shooters.I want Dust to be the game that it aims to be.As of right now,Dust is failing.I know that CCP is aware of this, but the question is,what are they doing to correct it?
My post isn't to say Dust sucks or that people should stop playing it and move on to something else, rather it is to shine a light on one of the biggest problems that CCP is facing to make the game successful.

If all you nerds have been following the console wars that are going on right before E3, you'll know atm the Xbox One is considered laughable compared to PS4. Pay for a used Xbox One game and then pay MS to play it... doubt it. I know a few hardcore Xbox players that play DUST, most of them said if this happens they are buying a PS4. One of the biggest games on the Xbox is HALO. Bungie made HALO... Bungie is making Destiny exclusively for the PS4. Connect the dots, tons of people will be playing Destiny. Destiny alone won't deflate (wont say kill) DUST. But if DUST isn't on the PS4 at launch (it wont be) and you could have Destiny, BF4, Watchdogs, Second Son, Killzone, COD: Ghosts, GTA V etc... would you really stay with DUST over a PS4 and all these games next gen games? Me either... I think DUST is about to find out how MAG felt with that exodus.
Destiny isn't a PS4 exclusive.This is from their official site. http://www.destinythegame.com/wheretobuy
Oh,and I think you could be right about a MAG-like exodus.I wouldn't be surprised if we see numbers dip under 6k on a nightly basis if they are a no show,or don't show anything new at E3. |

More than likely that it will get the same treatment for the XBox as well. |

steadyhand amarr wrote:After the defiance mess iv decided dust will never die it just stops growing. Iv met a lot of new people in FW that are blow away by Dust514. And I spend ever longer trying to get across that FW matches have a strong knock on effect EvE side. I hear what you are saying, but Bungie already has a built in following, something that Trion Worlds just doesn't nearly have as much of,as far as the FPS(or third person in Defiance's case) gaming space is concerned.
Also people, don't take for granted the power of a new COD and BF games will bring.I'm not a fan of either series, but my,nor anyone else's disinterest or disdain for it,won't make either of those games any less successful when they are released.
So here's an example of three AAA shooters that will be out on the market before the year is out.Like I said before,if people that play Dust right now decide to give any,or all of those a try,and they are having more fun playing them, don't be surprised if they never come back.
I'm really curious to see more of Destiny, and if it's good,I will definitely be splitting time between that and Dust. And if I am having more fun with Destiny,I have to be honest,it will be getting way more of my time and attention than Dust, but if Dust has a lot of it's issues ironed out before Destiny, then Dust will be getting more of my time and efforts.
