How the life of a new player should start (In my opinion) Please prepare for a bit of a read
The start of a new player's experience in DUST should be pretty damn epic, it should be a forced tutorial (atleast for the players first ever character), which should be affected by the choice of Faction at the start of the game. You should draw the player into the game, giving them a slight storyline to follow, allowing them to be immersed and fed a bit of the Lore.
The tutorial should focus on the basics, should take about 15-20 minutes and should allow you to quit, but have to resume before you're allowed on the battlefield if you have not completed it (As in a quicksave when you quit).
Points the Tutorial should include
- Bit of Lore about your Faction
- Exiting a Vehicle
- Explaining how to survive (Stick with your squad)
- Firing at an opponent
- Grenades
- Hacking
- Reviving
- Explaining the difference between Armor and Shields, ever so slightly.
- Repairing
- Nanohives
- Basic Vehicle usage
___
***Returns to Playstation, just finished Lunch*** ***DUST 514 has finished patching, clicks X to proceed*** ***Creates a new Character, Jase the Conquerer, Gallente*** ***Sits in the Merc Quarters and is prompted to join Infantry Training***
The game loads, yet a cinematic is playing, it shows the Gallente Federation, as the player as chosen to be of the Gallente Race, marching around, their ships flying in formation and lots of explosions and shiny things, a sexy voice talks to you throughout, welcoming you to the Gallente Federation and explains a little about the fight you're about to enter, the cinematic zooms into a planet, showing soldiers with Caldari emblems on them, patrolling and such.
The clip ends, your screen fades out and then back in, everything blurry around you, coming into focus slowly, as you sit in a Gallente Dropship, you see five other soldiers, clearly Gallente, talking, one of them taps you on the shoulder, asking "are you ready for this?" Comms break in, giving a load of military jargon, your character stands up, turning and taking a look out from the barrier, you see another Dropship flying nearby, your character turns to the right and looks towards a Caldari outpost, your ship goes towards the ground, landing. You're prompted to exit the vehicle, pressing triangle. (The longer you take, the more the commander and the pilot yell at you to get out of the Dropship).
Pressing Triangle doesn't immediately jump you outside of the vehicle, instead it walks you off of the dropship (similar to one of the trailers) and towards the other five mercenaries. Your commander starts speaking to you, telling you the importance of sticking with your squad, don't get seperated, a little icon on your HUD indicates the Squad Leader and you begin to follow him (Donut.)
Your squad mates take cover behind a wall, popping shots over it at the enemy ahead, one calls to you to take the guy out in the window above, an icon on your HUD shows him to you (Red Target Icon). Once you kill him, you and your squad advance (should you try to advance before hand, you get taken out by a sniper and you get placed back just before this event happens), taking cover again, the squad commander asks if anyone has a grenade, peeking around the corner. You proceed to where the ground is marked, and then aim your grenade where it tells you to, you chuck the grenade, it explodes and a hole in the wall appears.
You and your squad move up into the building, the squad forming up against the wall, covering you as you advance to the door, the commander tells you to get the door open, a new icon directs you to the computer, you move along to it and are prompted to hack the door, you hack and finish it, the door opens and your squad moves in, a firefight breaks out and one of your guys falls in the battle, the commander tosses you an Injector and tells you to get him up. You're shown how to activate equipment and it shows you how to use it.
The fallen soldier gets up, dusts himself off and thanks you, a beepbeepbeep is heard, and he says "Commander, Shields are full, but my armor is pretty weak, I don't think I'll survive anything like that last fight if I don't get myself fixed up" the commander nods and tells you to grab the Repair Tool off of the soldier that they killed moments ago, you pick it up and are given a little description about Armor and Shields, and then are prompted to equip the repair tool and to use it on the injured soldier.
The commander looks over the railing and begins to speak up on comms "Alright lads, stock up on ammo and we'll move out, quickly now", you are directed to a Nanohive, and collect some ammo from it, another ingame prompt tells you about nanohives.
Your squad proceeds, coming out of the building onto a road inside the compound, a Caldari Tank is parked sideways, flaming (not taking damage though) and empty, the commander tells you to capture the vehicle, you move up and hack it. Another voice breaks in and says the vehicle won't last long, you need to repair it, it prompts you to repair the vehicle with the Repair Tool, once done you're told to get inside. The same voice then tells you to activate the vehicle shield booster, the game shows you how and you activate it.
The next prompt is how to move the vehicle, two of your squad mates jump inside the vehicle, the other three sit on the sides. You move along and are told to ram the gates up ahead. You crash into them and are told to begin firing at the silos ahead, you fire at them, they catch alight and you're told to exit the vehicle and run like hell by your commander. You run and follow your squad, burning debris rains down on you and you follow them around some alleys, coming out onto a helipad where a Gallente Dropship is coming in, you board the ship and you get a few compliments.

You finish the tutorial mode, and you're sent a mail (the game shows you how to access your mail), it awards you a contract payment for completing the mission, and congratulates you. You can now use the Instant Battle to find battles around New Eden.
___
Just a concept I thought out, the tutorial mode should be engaging, seem fast paced but in reality slow enough for the player to grasp basic controls such as throwing the grenade or using a vehicle. The environment needs to be just right, Dropships and fighters flying overhead, shouts and gunfire everywhere and explosions in the distance (think artillery and such) has to be just right so the player really believes there is a war going on, it should give them a taste of what we want DUST to be like, it also wants to be interesting enough for them to want to complete, there needs to be voice actors, even the enemies cry out when they die and of course additional animations like the friendlies jumping onto the tank and riding along on top.
There shouldn't be constant reading of how to do things, just simple tool tips and reasons throughout the tutorial to do said things, thinks like being unable to go forward unless you hack that door, or using the tank to ram a door down, I know the engine doesn't do breakable environment, but surely it could be done on a small scale?
Just a thought. |

well thought out. I like it a lot. Great concept. New players are lost, I think something like this would go a long way but would require a lot of DEV time, but in the long run would make the game better because new players would have a clue instead of running around blindly. |

Thanks ^_^
Aye, this would take a fair bit of time, but it would definitely make for an enjoyable start to the game, providing some information without seeming painfully obvious. Back in 2004 I played a Game that was pure PvP, a player run market and completely free roam, the ability to be a criminal or law enforcer or even a corporate merchant, it was a cutthroat universe though, there wasn't any safezones but it provided a decent tutorial, it immersed you in the world if only for a little bit, and that I feel is one of the best things to have in a Tutorial, immersion. If a tutorial is all information, boring, if it is all immersion, it teaches you nothing. Combine them together? And you create a longing for such gameplay, you learn but you enjoy. |

+1 Though I think until we can pick up gear from downed enemies or blow holes in walls, (all things I hope we'll be able to do eventually) I don't think it should be in the tutorial, it might give the wrong idea of what one is able to do. I don't mean to be critical man, it's a good idea, I just don't want new players feeling tricked. It's bad for longevity me thinks... |

Aye, I agree, I was trying to think of ways to keep the concept flowing without giving a massive amount of danger to the player. It's possible to do things such as using a Grenade to take out a group of enemies watching a hack point to a door, and with the tank, possibly blowing up an enemy tank guarding an entry point. |

i've been pushing for this as well....mildly. it VERY MUCH goes against the eve model of super open ended gameplay but i see absolutely no reason this shouldn't be in dust
it'll solve one of the biggest complaints about the game that has cropped up in many reviews the lack of a sense of purpose, and connection to the larger eve universe if you start the game in a heated faction warfare battle with some orbital strikes going on and good character dialog talking about the eve universe (like "those damn capsuleers live in their palaces while we do all the work") will give a broader context

I'd have to disagree with you there. The EvE tutorial model has had a major overhaul in the past few years and now gives rookie pilots a full (though not complete) run through of all the basics they need to at least make a start rather than simply handing them an internet spaceship and sending them out to die.
Well, they're still going to die, but at least they'll know why they died |

I wouldn't mind volunteering time to help newer players out if there were a game mode prior to academy which was simply and open sand box training yard.
All it would need was respawning vehicles, hack points that reset, holographic targets.
Etc. If CCP gave out Intructor toons to experienced players willing to give their time and share their knowledge of game mechanics I feel that would be a great player driven intiative to get our community helping itself out. |

I don't feel it would be necessary, honestly. In the game I mentioned previously, they had this and it was a quick way to burn players out. When they received their little tag to say they were helpers, they felt obligated to log on every day and help, and in the end just quit.
Create a support team within the game to help with questions, but do not give the responsibility to players, instead allow them to form their own things, such as DUST Uni to help players. From my experience, players do better when they've created a group dedicated to helping new players rather than having a role they need to apply for, to have an "instructor toon" or badge to symbolize they're to help players. |

Great description and if we had pvp gameplay to match it I would love it. Creating a entrance or exit with a grenade or remote explosives would add a whole new element to the game.
I think CCP needs to add a proper tutorial to the game but it needs to match what is available in pvp at that time. As the pvp elements improve then so does the tutorial.
However, my firm belief is that new players need more time in the Academy and when they do leave they should have access to a rookie channel with Dust Uni, Bojo's, other Training Corps and volunteers can interact with them as and when they feel like it for that specific individual to avoid burnout. |

Some things are to be rightly adjusted, just an idea of how to use tanks in a tutorial mode or how to use a grenade without the player just running in and shooting at the three guys standing around, but can be changed.
Things like riding on a tank and character voices aren't expected in a Multiplayer Mode, it just makes things a little more "real". I've found that if the first hour is amazing, even if the rest aren't as good, people tend to stick with the game a lot more. |

The voice should actually be the selling point for each race.
Caldari: Smooth, calculated yet dulcet tones, layered and menacing but seductive too. Gallente: Outright sexy, a voice which makes you very uncomfortable in the pants. Minmatar: Rough, smoky voice, almost as if her lungs are scarred by countless battles (or other such... abuses). Make her roll her Rs, ohhhh yes. Amarr: Accented, clear and powerful, reminiscent of the Empress. When she tells you what to do, you do it.

Really? so everytime i make a new toon to mess about on i'll be forced to play 15-20 mins tutorial
Also, not everyone needs there hand held, personally im sick of games walking me through the 1st scene or level or what have you, i dont even understand why others need this "help" its hardly rocket science....
but sure the option might be nice for some "windowlickers", but again it shouldnt be mandatory |

As mentioned, for the FIRST character, you would partake in it. Don't know if you've noticed, but we lose more and more players for reasons like not understanding the game and not being able to compete against higher SP characters.
Let's try and solve the first one, instead of calling people "windowlickers", the majority of people playing the game would benefit, but a lot of them will presume the game is like any standard FPS, but not having a mandatory tutorial to partake in, they'll skip it and continue, missing how to do a couple of key things and getting constantly killed. |

That's a shame. Players I've spoken to have enjoyed the game a lot more after I've walked them through some basics such as using equipment, vehicles and got them moving in a squad.
Aye, the core issues aren't great and will be addressed, but a Tutorial must be in place for new players to understand, one that immerses them in the lore of New Eden and doesn't just give them a wall of text. |
