Tried Planetside 2. I spent 10 minutes trying to get to a fight, got killed in a millisecond to find that there were no spawn points nearby. Bought a plane (with the limited resources), spent 2 minutes flying to the location of the fight using horrible flight controls, got 1-shotted by a tank to find that there were still no spawn points nearby. Bought a quad bike, spent 4 minutes driving to a battle, when I was 200m away, the quad bike flipped over on a pebble and blew up instantly killing me. There were still no spawn points nearby.
Now, I was probably missing some sort of mechanics that might alleviate this a bit, but coupled with the horrendous grinding required to improve just 1 of the 4 (or is it 5?) classes even a little bit, I have to say that despite the graphics of Planetside 2 being far better, the graphic design of Dust is far better, the (broken) matchmaking is far better, the (unbalanced) gameplay is far better, the (hard to control) vehicles are far better.
I am, however, quite enjoying Hawken, that I picked up during yesterday's ddos attack... |

No.

-At least PS2 has INTERESTING vehicles. You can make them better in PS2 and they aren't gimped as **** in PS2
-Matchmaking...PS2 is open world. Next.
- Grinding is far more fun in Dust, and the possibility of AFKing alleviates even that for the dullards who want to spend their time in a game doing nothing.
- I'll agree that the vehicles do look more interesting, but their availability in Dust is greater (when you have the skills) and the customisability of them is greater so that they fit your playstyle better.
- Yeah, PS2 is open world. This makes the barrier to entry is even greater than in Dust. Long-term players own the battlefield in both games, but a coordinated squad at least stands a bit of a chance in Dust and has the opportunity to win the "ISK war", if not the battle.
I'm not a Dust fanboy, I'm just calling these two games as I see them. PS2 is open world, but every small victory is quickly reversed so even though the war claims to be persistent, it's a very transient kind of persistency. Faction warfare in Dust is far more persistent (needs better ties to Eve to make this obvious though). Claiming your own turf in Dust is far more motivating than claiming a region in PS2 that will be reclaimed within minutes of you logging off. |

@Kyro Justice:
I can see that we simply want different things from our games. There's nothing wrong with that. :)
PS2 is definately a more finished product than Dust is right now, and I'll admit the thing I like most about Dust is the potential. CCP has said that the current iteration of Dust is just a framework. When the framework is working (many things are flawed right now), more content will come.
My interpretation of PC is that a large corp is needed. I agree, it shouldn't be like a job. But if you are in a corp that has a minimum of 16 players online at a specific time, is it so much like work for those players to stop playing pub matches for a single match and defend their turf instead?
From my limited experience of PC, the loot and ISK is indeed greater than pub matches *for the winners*. The loot is based on opponent's gear that is destroyed on the battlefield. In PC matches, this is usually prototype and Aurum gear. The ISK payout for the winner is based on the number of clones remaining on the opposing team that get rendered down. I've heard of ISK payouts in the millions for the winners. The losers only get loot, no ISK. It's a higher stakes kind of game.
As for the redlines... I've noticed a lot less redline games since Uprising, in pub matches, anyway. At the end of Chromosome, it seemed like 4/5 of games were redlines, now it seems more like 1/10.
As for the other stuff, the maps are getting a bit tired now after my 2 months of playing. The controls are very buggy what with sticking to flat walls, my genetically engineered cloned super-soldier getting too tired to make it up the last steps of ramps, aiming glitches, ineffective hip-fire, and then the inevitable balancing issues.
Peace, man. |
