I roll shield tanks, but both sides of tanking have their ups and downs.
First, some general rules. You are not a one-man infantry meat grinder. If you head out on your own, you will die horribly. Vehicles are a tool that, when used properly, work to great effect in supporting your team, be it by taking out other vehicles or providing a wall to hide behind.
Shield tanks are naturally resistant to explosives (AV nades, swarms) and come with decent shield regeneration, so repping from infantry fire isn't as much of an issue. I see shield tanks as superior infantry support vehicles, able to provide moving cover for the team as well as taking out hostile installations while being able to absorb small arms fire with near impunity.
If you roll with a shield tank, beware of forge guns and enemy tanks. Forges work great against shields, as do rails. The shield repairer also takes more time to apply its full effect over the armor repairer, and it repairs less total than an armor would. Shield tanks have a weak PG pool to work with, so the lows are commonly filled with PG upgrades, leaving little room for customization or damage enhancement.
Armor tanks are beasts at taking on other tanks head to head. With superior active hardeners and a greater PG pool to pull from, these things can be fit to have both tank and gank. The lowslots are dedicated to tank, which frees up the mids for all sorts of gunnery goodies (active heat sinks <3).
Armor falls short of shield tanks when it comes to prolonged deployment. They carry every scar with them unless manually repaired, as there is no passive regeneration. Armor is also very weak to explosives (AV nades, swarms, missiles) and can lose out quickly to infantry if caught out in the open. Because of this weakness, armor tanks are designed to brawl with other tanks. Close distance fast, activate modules, and lay into the enemy, then get out before infantry have time to react.
TL;DR - Depends on playstyle. Shield to support infantry, armor to brawl with other tanks. I personally use shields.
This is from my experience playing since closed beta, and in that time I have driven both armor and shield tanks. Hit me up if you want any more info or help with anything. |
