so I was going up against a guy that had a armored tank and I had a shield tank and we both was using the compressed particle cannon rail gun I got his life half way down and he had already used his repair but he poped his armor hardener and after that I couldnt do anything to him he had 3000 armor left and I had 6000 shield left and he destroyed me and on top of that I had 3 15% shield damage reduction with a plus 300 hp shield booster how did I lose that battle it makes me mad because I had a brand new tank and thought he would be a easy kill because my partners got his life bar down is armor tanks suppose to be better I thought armor tanks just have extra time on modules?

I would suppose that he didn't use his Repair and just activated 2 Hardeners and/or a Heat Sink. And/Or you were also taking damage elsewhere. And/Or you are unaware of the exact numbers. Might have missed several shots on him. There are plenty of reasons why he ended up beating you, though it is hard for the person that did not witness it to determine.

I just posted in another tank thread. I think it's pretty relevant, so I'll throw it on here too.
Copied from my other post.
I roll shield tanks, but both sides of tanking have their ups and downs.
Shield tanks are naturally resistant to explosives (AV nades, swarms) and come with decent shield regeneration, so repping from infantry fire isn't as much of an issue. I see shield tanks as superior infantry support vehicles, able to provide moving cover for the team as well as taking out hostile installations while being able to absorb small arms fire with near impunity.
If you roll with a shield tank, beware of forge guns and enemy tanks. Forges work great against shields, as do rails. The shield repairer also takes more time to apply its full effect over the armor repairer, and it repairs less total than an armor would. Shield tanks have a weak PG pool to work with, so the lows are commonly filled with PG upgrades, leaving little room for customization or damage enhancement.
Armor tanks are beasts at taking on other tanks head to head. With superior active hardeners and a greater PG pool to pull from, these things can be fit to have both tank and gank. The lowslots are dedicated to tank, which frees up the mids for all sorts of gunnery goodies (active heat sinks <3).
Armor falls short of shield tanks when it comes to prolonged deployment. They carry every scar with them unless manually repaired, as there is no passive regeneration. Armor is also very weak to explosives (AV nades, swarms, missiles) and can lose out quickly to infantry if caught out in the open. Because of this weakness, armor tanks are designed to brawl with other tanks. Close distance fast, activate modules, and lay into the enemy, then get out before infantry have time to react.
TL;DR - Depends on playstyle. Shield to support infantry, armor to brawl with other tanks. I personally use shields. |

actually not true armor HAVs have shields and they recharge over time and if small arms fire was that bad then ARs could kill tanks. armor tanks first rate, best all around tanks, all purpose shield tanks second rate tanks worse then armor and less usefully all the way around, SL deterrence slightly. |

Armor tanks are better at killing tanks bc of the longer lasting hardeners and the superior reppers, but lose vs infantry bc of how common swarms and av nades are.
Shield HAVs are the exact opposite. |

Thank you I have been preaching this philosophy for this build . I can sit and eat swarms and av nades all day in my high tank low gank builds to an extent that armour tanks can only dream off . Shields are now the kings of anti infantry and squad support where as armour tanks are the anti vehicle and anti instalation masters. Tank v tank pending on fit and pilot ability always has an unpredictable outcome but more often than not I see armour tanks popping shield tanks. Personally I dont loose many tanks to tank v tank battles but I guess im just lucky. |

Hybrid weapons (rail/blaster) have a bonus to shields. For armor.... Missile. For you to have come out of that fight (smoldering) would have been at a distance. At range, or rear flank and spammed missiles till she pops. |

Yeah. That seems to be the trade off. I am a new tanker. I started with armor, felt I was dying too much, so when I got my respec I went to shield tanks. I still die quite a bit because I'm reckless, however I really do like how I survive much easier against explosive damage. All it takes though is a couple of good blasts from a forge gun/rails on another tank to off me pretty quick. Other thanks hurt bad too.
So now when I see tanks I just try to be sneaky and flank em. That usually does the trick. :)
As armor I was really able to kill the same amount of infantry for the most part as I used a blaster on both that armor tank, but if I was caught out in the open, or in a facility surrounded by infantry with av nades, I was gone in a blink. x.x
Being in a tank has improved my KDR though, but it has slowly chipped away at my cash flow. One day I may grow half a brain and be a bit more cautious with my tanks. :) |
